Cosmic Fantasy League

Many Moons ago, Capricorn Research believed it had stumbled upon a staggering finding that showed Virgo as being the most common sign amongst Premier League players. Virgo, Scorpio and Sagittarius scored highly with Gemini, Cancer and Leo scoring no more than half as many. It seemed astonishing, but no particular astrological reason could explain Virgo’s dominance. On closer viewing, it was realised that the first 10 degrees of Virgo scored as low as Leo. What in fact had been discovered was a seasonal bias that could be attributed to the age of a child in their year at school.

As children join the reception class there is a wide difference in their ages, a September born would be 5 and an August child barely 4. This would be evidenced by all of their abilities but in physical terms and in confidence in their movement patterns the September children would be far ahead of their August counterparts. As they got older one would expect this difference to become less important but a glance at the research shows that it has a major impact even 20 years later when they are playing football for a living.

There has been much research done to prove this but it has to be said that the phenomena is more significant in the Premier League than in other leagues abroad. This could be due to different school intakes but sadly it seems to point to an indictment of English football in that its physically stronger youngsters are more likely to make it than in other leagues. It seems that the old ‘ lump it up to the big centre forward ‘ idea starts very young in England.

The one thing that was noticed in the research was that there were more truly world class players with the Sun in Scorpio than in any other sign. This would make sense, but of course the decision on who is best must be fairly subjective.

Capricorn Research has decided to pick 12 teams for the ultimate Cosmic Fantasy League based purely on Sun signs so readers can make their own choice.

ARIES

1  MANUEL  NEUER

2  SERGIO  RAMOS

3  ROBERTO  CARLOS

4  LOTHAR MATTHAUS

5  VINCENT KOMPANY

6   BOBBY MOORE

7  FRANK RIBERY

8  RONALDINHO

9   RIVALDO

10  FERENC PUSKAS

11  TOM FINNEY

SUBS  JOE HART,  FERNANDO HIERRO, CLARENCE  SEEDORF,  RUDI VOLLER, RONALD KOEMAN, KAKA, RUI COSTA

MANAGER   ARRIGO  SACCHI

An incredible team, with that formidable forward line these Arians would frighten the life any opponents and a cultured defensive unit would easily deal with anything thrown at them. The subs bench could be stronger, however and in true Aries fashion they may not have the staying power to win the 22 games, home and away, required to win the Cosmic Fantasy League.

TAURUS

1  IKER CASILLAS

2  DANI ALVES

3  NILTON SANTOS

4  NOBBY STILES

5  JACK CHARLTON

6  FRANCO BARESI

7  DAVID BECKHAM

8  ANDRES INIESTA

9  OSCAR CARDOZO

10  DENNIS  BERGKAMP

11  JOHANN CRUYFF

SUBS    PETER CECH,  LUCIO, ALAN BALL, ANDREA PIRLO, CESC FABREGAS, DIEGO FORLAN, YAYA TOURE

MANAGER   JUPP HEYNCKES

This Taurean side looks very solid with players you can rely on to consistently produce good stuff over the course of a season, but they may be a little short when it comes to goalscoring compared to some of the others. Also some of these Bulls in defence may get a few red cards waved at them.

GEMINI

1  OLIVER KAHN

2  KYLE WALKER

3  JOSE CAMACHO

4  STEVEN GERRARD

5  GAETANO SCIREA

6  ALAN HANSEN

7  GEORGE BEST

8  PAUL GASCOIGNE

9  SERGIO AGUERO

10  ERIC CANTONA

11  JAVIER PASTORE

SUBS   FERNANDO MUSLERA, ALEX, MIROSLAV KLOSE, MARIO GOTZE, ROBERTO DI MATTEO,  FRANK LAMPARD, WESLEY SNEIJDER

MANAGER    MATT BUSBY

A fair sprinkling a mercurial genius in the Gemini side but there is a question whether they would be a bit lightweight for a tough season against the best in history.

CANCER

1  FABIAN BARTHEZ

2  CARLOS ALBERTO

3  PAULO MALDINI

4  GIACINTO FIACHETTI

5  JAAP STAM

6  SERGIO BUSQUETS

7  LIONEL MESSI

8  MICHEL PLATINI

9  ALFREDO DI STEFANO

10  ZINEDINE ZIDANE

11  GARETH BALE

SUBS  UBALDO FILLOL, CAFU, DAVID ALABA, RUUD VAN NISTELROY, RAUL, GIANFRANCO ZOLA,  JUAN ROMAN RIQUELME,

MANAGER    DON REVIE

An unbelievably strong Cancerian side with a forward line to die for and a cultured midfield providing strong nourishing support. The only slight question mark is do they have the necessary toughness to go with the subtlety and sensitivity that is clear throughout the squad.

LEO

1   JOSE CHILAVERT

2  JAVIER ZANETTI

3  GIORGIO CHIELLINI

4  BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER

5  JOSE SANTAMARIA

6  MIGUEL ANGEL NADAL

7  TELE SANTANA

8  ROY KEANE

9  ALAN SHEARER

10  JUST FONTAINE

11  THIERRY HENRY

SUBS   NIGEL MARTYN, IVAN CORDOBA, MARCO MATERAZZI, JURGEN KLINSMANN, DECO, ROBERTO LEWANDOWSKI, DANIELE DE ROSSI,

MANAGER   LOUIS VAN GAAL

There are some really tough characters amongst this Leo side and clearly they would be convinced about being world beaters. Overconfidence could be a problem and maybe the weakness is in goal, and defensively they are strong but perhaps not the fastest, maybe they could be beaten on the counter attack.

VIRGO

1  DAVID SEAMAN

2  OBDULIO VARELA

3  PAUL BREITNER

4  FRANZ BECKENBAUER

5  FABIO CANNAVARO

6  MARCEL DESAILLY

7  CARLOS VALDERAMA

8  RUUD GULLIT

9   RONALDO

10  LEONIDAS DA SILVA

11  HARRY KEWELL

SUBS   JULIO CESAR, LAURENT KOSCIELNY, HENRIK LARSSEN, MATTHIAS SAMMER, JOAO MOUTINHO, OSCAR, ALAN GIRESSE

MANAGER    BILL  SHANKLY

The Virgoans are another tremendous team, strong on work ethic with a few stars as well but perhaps just slightly short in midfield where they lack a real creative, visionary genius.

LIBRA

1  MARTIN STEKELENBURG

2  GEORGE COHEN

3  CLAUDIO GENTILE

4  DUNCAN EDWARDS

5  TONY ADAMS

6  THIAGO SILVA

7  CLODOALDO

8  ANDREI SHEVCHENKO

9  BOBBY CHARLTON

10  ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC

11  FRANCISCO GENTO

SUBS  MARK SCHWARZER,  JURGEN KOHLER, NEMANJA VIDIC, GEORGE WEAH, DIEGO COSTA, FRANCESCO TOTTI, MICHAEL BALLACK

MANAGER     JOCK STEIN

A nicely balanced Libran side that would win over many supporters but do they have the incisiveness and dominance needed to win this league. Also a possible weakness in goal.

SCORPIO

1  PETER SCHMEICHEL

2  PHILIP LAHM

3  ANDREAS  BREHME

4  JOSE ANDRADE

5  LAURENT BLANC

6  PAUL SCHOLES

7  GARRINCHA

8  PELE

9   GERD MULLER

10  MARADONA

11  LUIS FIGO

SUBS  EDWIN VAN DER SAR, ELIAS FIGUEROA, RIO FERDINAND, MARCO VAN BASTEN, WAYNE ROONEY, ROBERT PIRES, IAN RUSH,

MANAGER    PHIL SCOLARI

This is a stunningly powerful Scorpio side with the strongest possible forward line. They have it within them to rise above everyone else and the capacity to dig deep to find the inner inspiration needed. Surely the favourites for the Cosmic Fantasy League.

SAGITTARIUS

1  ANTON SCHUMACHER

2  STEVE NICOL

3  ASHLEY COLE

4  XABI ALONSO

5  JOHN TERRY

6  MATS  HUMMELS

7  ALEXIS SANCHEZ

8  SANTI CAZORLA

9  GARY LINEKER

10  MICHAEL OWEN

11  RYAN GIGGS

SUBS  EMILIO VIVIANO, LEIGHTON BAINES, NEVEN SUBOTIC, BILLY BREMNER, DAVID VILLA, MICHAEL ESSIEN, GEOFF HURST

MANAGER    AIME JACQUET

Another great side with a surprisingly strong English contingent. These Sagittarians  have a great deal of flair but perhaps not the toughness in defence to hold out against the very best.

CAPRICORN

1  GORDON BANKS

2  BERTI VOGTS

3  PHIL NEVILLE

4  PEP GUARDIOLA

5  LILIAN THURAM

6  GUISEPPE BERGOMI

7  JAIRZINHO

8  BRIAN ROBSON

9  JOHN CHARLES

10  ULI HOENESS

11  EDEN HAZARD

SUBS  VICTOR VALDES, ALVARO ARBELOA, MARCELO SALAS, ROBERTO BETTEGA, JACK WILSHERE, GENNARO GATTUSO, DAVID SILVA

MANAGER    ALEX FERGUSON

The Capricorns have a solid look about them and can be relied on for a consistent level of performance. A bit short on flair, however to really succeed at this level.

AQUARIUS

1  GIANLUIGI BUFFON

2  GARY NEVILLE

3  CHRISTIAN ZIEGE

4  CLAUDE MAKELELE

5  BILLY WRIGHT

6  GERARD PIQUE

7  CRISTIANO RONALDO

8  XAVI

9  JIMMY GREAVES

10  EUSEBIO

11  ARJEN ROBBEN

SUBS   HEURELHO GOMES, OSCAR RUGGERI, NEYMAR, ANGEL DI MARIA, LUIS SUAREZ, ROMARIO,  SOCRATES

MANAGER    JOSE MOURINHO

Another staggering side with great vision going forward and surely the strongest attacking subs bench in the Cosmic Fantasy League. Equality is an Aquarian concept and there were so many world class attackers that didn’t even make the squad. Defence and conserving the lead that their strike force would inevitably give them would be their problem, however.

PISCES

1  DINO ZOFF

2  DJALMA SANTOS

3  HOLGER BADSTUBER

4  JUAN SEBASTIAN VERON

5  ALESSANDRO NESTA

6  BILLY MCNEILL

7  STANLEY MATTHEWS

8  KENNY DALGLISH

9  DIXIE DEAN

10  ZICO

11  DIDER DROGBA

SUBS  LEV YASHIN, DENIS LAW, BENEDICKT HOWEDES, COLIN BELL, PEPE,  EDGAR DAVIDS, FERNANDO TORRES,

MANAGER  HARRY REDKNAPP

The Piscean side is very cultured and highly skilled full of intelligent creativity and  fluid and inspired passing. The weakness is in defence, however and they would not be expected to hold out against the very best.

So the Zodiac League would provide the very best football available anywhere in the Cosmos. Prediction is always difficult but Capricorn Research is up for the challenge.

FINAL PLACINGS

1    SCORPIO

2    CANCER

3    AQUARIUS

4    ARIES

5    PISCES

6   LEO

7   TAURUS

8   VIRGO

9   LIBRA

10  GEMINI

11  CAPRICORN

12  SAGITTARIUS

As always Capricorn research is happy to receive any feedback, any favourites been missed out and thoughts on the outcome.

  1. Can’t believe you have put the Saggi team last! Sagittarius is surely one of the luckiest side’s with Jupiter on are side and sporty, just don’t put a female physio in the squad! LOL Think of Alanso (what a footballer this man is…..I watched him at Anfield many times from the Kop. He had a fantastic football brain, maybe not as many goals as Gerard or as quick but what vision and passing ability ahhhhh. Stevie Nicol very underrated, think of all the titles and cups he has won? Being a red hot Liverpool fan and with Sun,Venus, Mercury and Saturn in Sag maybe I’m a tad biased!LOL
