The more we discover about the Universe through astrology, the more we see that our old notions of cause and effect really do not cut it.

The whole show operates through symbolic resonance. Astrologers’ attempts to explain how and why this works will inevitably fail to communicate the sheer power of this truth.

We just know that it does.

We know this because we see astonishing examples of it so many times each day that we are no longer surprised by them.

You can take any combination of things that to a “scientist” have no logical connection, but nevertheless have a sympathy, its almost certain that there will be a strong astrological link between them.

Astrology is fundamentally about the connection between time and place. If we know those things we can come to a powerful understanding of the life of anything or anyone that begins at that intersection.

Time itself has a symbolic quality. If you mention the 1960s to anyone, it will evoke a certain feel that will incorporate rebellion, free love, the peace movement, an explosion of youth culture, of film and TV alongside massive technological change.

Astrologers would have one symbolic reference that covers all of that – the Uranus/Pluto conjunction in Virgo that was in operation for most of the decade.

If you were to ask that person to pick one place in the world that evoked the qualities of the 1960s more than any other, it’s a fair bet that they would pick California.

From Hollywood to Haight Ashbury to Silicon Valley, the Uranus/Pluto conjunction seemed to be designed specifically for the Golden State.

But why California rather than New York, Texas or indeed France, Germany or any other place on earth?

Simply because it had been there before. Right at the start.

Uranus’ orbit is regular taking 84 years to get round, Pluto’s is not so but this conjunction would occur roughly once a century.

California was incorporated into the Union on September 9th 1850, on the last exact Uranus/Pluto conjunction.

Not only that, at 9.30 on that morning it was on an angle and opposite the Moon/Venus/Ascendant conjunction that gives California such an edge in popular culture.

This conjunction formed again on 2nd April 1966 at 16.32 Virgo exactly (within 6 minutes) on the California Sun.

Because those same “scientists” would scoff at these notions of resonance, I like to describe these types of happenings in terms that they can understand.

The odds of such an occurrence happening by chance are 1800/1 against.

But when you allow symbolic resonance to lead you, these are the kind of odds that you would expect to occur.

Most of my articles come into existence because of this, I am told by the powers that be in the Universe, what to write and when to do it.

This seems to be the time to write a piece on the chart for California because on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, Saturn is exactly opposite the state’s Sun.

So they are not going to be happy bunnies.

This piece was prompted by a discussion with a client who, like several since November 5th was enquiring about emigrating from the US.

This client has the Sun at 23 Virgo, in exact square to Trump’s own Sun and Moon, so with Saturn coming along to oppose that, it was a no brainer. Best to cut and run.

My client was living in California and has good all round synastry with the state’s chart besides the conjunction of their Suns. His preferred destination was Mexico, which also has the Sun at 23 Virgo, so we agreed that it would be the perfect place to land, although perhaps not in March when the lunar eclipse hits that very degree.

He reminded me that California was the richest state in the world and basically bankrolled the US and we wondered about the possibility of it establishing it’s own independence.

This might seem far fetched but if such a scenario was ever to happen it would require transit Pluto to be involved.

And Pluto is about to square the California Venus, Moon and Ascendant and conjunct its IC.

So we will watch this space.

Perhaps California will start to make independent international connections with other countries. In which case some kind of Pacific pact with China (Moon/Ascendant at 3-5 Aquarius) and Australia ( Sun/Ascendant at 5-6 Aquarius) might emerge.

Symbolic resonance can bring together people and entities that would (to the untrained eye) seem unlikely bedfellows.

We humans are untrained in this way of thinking. We have been conditioned to see things as separate and having no connectivity. This thinking even pervades our approach to astrology without us realising it.

The astrological world is obsessed with individual placements rather than patterns.

Everyone talks about X planet being the ruler of Y house and what that means as if it can exist on its own.

There’s very little reference to it’s angular connections with all the others, yet it’s those patterns that entirely drive the person’s life themes.

In order to really understand astrology and life, we have to loosen our separatist conditioning and look at the chart as a whole to get a feel for the interplay of all the symbols.

If you take the chart of California and place it over a map of the United States that Moon/Venus/Ascendant conjunction falls right on its coastline.

It seems to be saying the American dream is to head west to indulge in this Moon and Venus.

If so that combination in Scorpio suggests that the dream is one of Californication.

We note that despite the fun to be had with the Moon and Venus, they are signs of fall and detriment.

We can see this play out in the Eagles song, Hotel California which is supposedly about “dark underbelly of the American dream. It’s about excess, narcissism, decadence and burnout, too much money, corruption, drugs and arrogance; too little humility and heart.”

That Moon/Venus/Ascendant conjunction is so enticing, but in Scorpio, it could be the death of you.

“You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave”….

Unless there’s a Pluto transit.
