Rihanna and Chris Brown – A Study in Domestic Abuse

A question that is often asked about women that get abused by their partners is ‘ Why was she involved with him in the first place ? ‘ This is a difficult question to deal with because there are many undertones to it. There is a suggestion that the partner was always likely to be abusive, with  it the accompanying idea that the woman should have spotted this beforehand. There can even be the idea that for some reason the woman attracted abusive behaviour to herself, that she was unconsciously looking for the kind of attention that could easily turn violent. Relationships with abusive fathers can often be brought into the equation to suggest that it was the kind of family situation that she was used to and seemed normal.

Domestic abuse is always wrong and usually an expression of an uneven power balance within a relationship but it is an easy knee jerk response to react with strongly negative judgements about both perpetrator and victim.

Everyone is different and nowhere in life are these differences more apparent than in the field of personal relationships. There is however, an assumption that a certain way of acting is normal and anything that doesn’t fit simply into that paradigm is not. Perhaps our desperation to define what is normal comes from a strong motivation to be seen within that spectrum ourselves.

Astrology doesn’t do normal or abnormal. Every chart has a 7th house which governs behaviour and themes within a relationship and the possible combinations of planets appearing both in this house and aspected to it are endless.

The Disney view of the Princess living happily ever after with the Prince who rescues her from a wicked stepmother may work out for some souls who have the Sun conjunct Venus and Jupiter in Taurus in the 7th, but for every one of them there is a Mars / Saturn / Uranus conjunction that would bring completely the opposite experience.

One person who has that particular combination is pop singer and actress Rihanna.

Rihanna’s work has earned her numerous awards and accolades, including six Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, 22 Billboard Music Awards, and two BRIT Awards. She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. In 2012, Forbes named her as the fourth most powerful celebrity of 2012, with earnings of $53 million between May 2011 and May 2012. The same year, TIME named Rihanna one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

So its no surprise that her Sun is conjunct the Midheaven right at the top of the 10th house of career.

Rihanna’s sex symbol status is guaranteed. Emily Hewett from Metro wrote, “Rihanna is quite possibly THE most sexiest woman in the world… Rihanna looks good in anything. Yes, ANYTHING. She even managed to make boiler suits look sexy in Battleship.” She has appeared in the top ten on Maxim’s Hot 100 list and on FHM’s “100 Sexiest Women in the World” several times.

Absolutely what you’d expect from someone with an exact Moon / Venus conjunction in Aries.

So how is it that someone with this combination ends up in an abusive relationship ? It’s that very close Mars / Saturn / Uranus conjunction in the 7th house.

Mars and Saturn are a difficult combination in any area, the red planet is all go and the ringed one is all stop. The two together is like driving with one foot hard down on the accelerator and the other one firmly planted on the brake. It’s the simplest astrological indication that the thing you so strongly desire is definitely not what you’re going to get. In the 7th house this combination would suggest that relationships become a battleground and it can easily point to an abusive partner. If we throw the unpredictable and equally volatile Uranus into the mix the results can easily become quite nasty.

Anyone with this combination going to an astrologer would be well advised to avoid partners with similar patterns. Unfortunately Rihanna didn’t receive this kind of advice when she got together with rap star, dancer and actor Chris Brown.

Chris Brown

Chris Brown’s debut album peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 and his first single “Run It!” reached the top the Hot 100. His first two albums were certified double platinum by the RIAA. Like Rihanna he has the Sun conjunct the Midheaven right at the top of his career house. He also has 4 other planets there including the Moon and Jupiter so success is a foregone conclusion.

What he also shares with Rihanna is an aspect between Mars, Saturn and Uranus. In Brown’s case this aspect is a challenging opposition and it’s made even stronger by the presence of Neptune as well. Mars in opposition to this lot is likely to result in outbursts of violence due to the levels of stress and frustration contained within the aspect.

In Brown’s chart the conjunction of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune is in the 5th house, the place of affairs of the heart whereas Rihanna’s is in the 7th, the house of long term relationships. The house placings may reveal a difference in the ideas that each had about their relationship.

Even if these two had been advised to avoid each other the magnetic power of the Mars connections would have meant their relationship was inevitable. Given that, any astrologer would be advising them to stay away from each other between 2008 – 9. At that time Pluto was conjunct Rihanna’s Mars and opposite Brown’s so an explosion of some sort would happen.

Their relationship began in 2008. In February 2009, the couple had an argument which escalated into physical violence, leaving Rihanna with visible facial injuries which required hospitalisation. In June Brown pleaded guilty to a felony and accepted a plea deal of community labor, five years’ formal probation, and domestic violence counselling. Several organizations against domestic violence criticized the plea deal, advocating the punishment was not severe enough for the crime and the level of Brown’s influence over youth also came under scrutiny.

Brown released a two-minute video on his official YouTube page apologizing to fans and Rihanna for the assault.  In his first interview after the trial he said ” I’m in shock, because, first of all, that’s not who I am as a person, and that’s not who I promise I want to be.”

This is probably a fairly standard response from people found guilty of abusive behaviour, claiming to be not like that really. Another look at Brown’s chart would suggest that whilst it is behaviour that is indicated its understandable how it would come as a complete shock to him.

Because Chris Brown has the Sun, Moon and Venus conjunct in solid reliable Taurus and Mercury conjunct Jupiter in friendly Gemini, this is bound to be how he sees himself. The fact that its at the very top of the chart means that this personna is constantly on show. The Taurus planets however form an opposition with Pluto in Scorpio at the very base of the chart so we have a deeply unconscious but explosive and intense influence which will inevitably force its way to the surface at some point, probably when Pluto is in aspect to his Mars.

This Pluto is like the proverbial red rag to Chris Brown’s Taurean bull.

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of the whole episode was that Rihanna and Chris Brown got back together in 2012. Again people asked how could she be up for that again ?

Evidence from Rihanna’s childhood was used to suggest she was recreating patterns due to her own insecurity. She was deeply affected by her father’s addiction to crack cocaine, alcohol, and marijuana, and her parents’ turbulent marriage ended when she was 14 when Uranus was conjunct her Sun.

Rihanna’s response was ”When you add up the pieces from the outside, it’s not the cutest puzzle in the world. You see us walking somewhere, driving somewhere, in the studio, in the club, and you think you know. But it’s different now. We don’t have those types of arguments anymore. We talk about shit. We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don’t want to lose that…. He’s not the monster everybody thinks. He’s a good person. He has a fantastic heart. He’s giving and loving. And he’s fun to be around. That’s what I love about him – he always makes me laugh. All I want to do is laugh, really – and I do that with him.”

They broke up within 4 months of that interview.

Rihanna is a Sun Pisces, a sign that is commonly believed to live in a kind of dream world not seeing reality as the rest of us do. This may well be true to some extent but it’s particularly appropriate when Neptune, the planet of illusion comes to call. From the summer of 2011 to the spring of 2013, Neptune was conjunct Rihanna’s Sun.

Astrological online dating has become quite a thing with lots of good advice about which Sun signs to avoid and which ones to jump on. The trouble is like so much astrological coverage, this is so much the tip of the iceberg that its mostly useless. Rihanna as a Pisces and Chris Brown as a Taurus would be touted as a perfect combination, he would support and give shape to her and she would inspire him etc etc. There are lots of astrological contacts that attract one person to another but they generally focus around the Moon, Venus, Mars and particularly the 7th and 5th houses, not the Sun.

So if you have a Mars / Saturn / Uranus conjunction in the 7th and are tempted by someone with an almost identical combination, just don’t.
