The basic principle of astrology is that anyone born at a moment in time will carry with them the characteristics of that moment.
By looking at the planetary patterns of that moment, we can come to an understanding of the key themes of the life of that person.
Transits to those patterns will identify what the Universe is requiring of them by way of adjustment at that particular time in their life.
But when we start to look into Secondary Progressions in astrology, we need to see our charts in a different way, we need to think outside the box.
Because progressions are the connection that we have with our soul’s journey through many lifetimes.
Once you make this reincarnation link, you soon realise that we have all been many different characters in our previous lives.
We have shared lives with other members of our soul group, but have played different roles. Men have been women, lovers have been parents, children have been siblings and many other combinations.
When doing a past life review for a client, a horary cast for time of their request is exceptionally helpful here, because it will describe these roles.
When someone requests a past life review, this is the astrological equivalent of going for past life regression hypnotism. They are accessing the deeply subconscious part of their brain that knows what their past life experiences were.
A horary for that moment will reproduce these in astrological code. So the chart will describe their past life experience.
As with any horary, the chart ruler represents the person asking the question.
If that planet is in a Fire or Air sign, they were male in that previous life, if in Earth or Water, they were female.
The house that it is in will describe their situation, 4th would be a parent, 5th a child, 7th a spouse, 10th an employer, 11th a friend and so on.
If they are asking about a past life with their husband or wife, we do the same for the 7th house ruler, if for a parent, the 4th house ruler etc.
An example of this would be R who asked about a Past Life and whether his Mum, partner or brother were involved.
Here is R’s Past Life Horary.

Cancer is rising, so the Moon would signify R, in Libra he would be a man in that life as well.
The Moon being in the 2nd house would mean money was an important theme.
To find his Mum, we look at the 4th house ruler. Pluto is in Capricorn so she would have been a woman, in the 7th, she would have been his wife.
There is a tight opposition between Pluto and the Ascendant so there is clearly some conflict between R and his mother/wife in that life.
R’s current partner would be the 7th ruler, Saturn in Pisces, so another woman.
Saturn being in the 7th house would indicate that she was also in a relationship with R back then.
R’s brother would be the 3rd house ruler, Venus in Sagittarius would be a man, in the 4th house would be his father.
Looking further into this, R in that life was married to Pluto (his current life Mum), he had an affair with a much younger woman (his current partner) as Saturn is at 3 degrees of its sign, Pluto at 29.
His father (current life brother) was very much against the affair because Venus is square to Saturn.
Note that all of the people discussed retained the same sex from that last life. The odds of that happening by chance are 16/1 against, but it happens far more often than that.
You would expect the odds of anyone staying the same sex would be 50/50, but my experience is that it’s more like 75/25.
Here’s one that changed.

S wanted to look at a past life with his family members.
Pisces is rising, so he would be signified by Neptune, which being in that sign would mean S would be female in that life.
The Moon seems to be playing an important part as it’s rising in close conjunction with Saturn. As the Moon is 5th house ruler, it would represent his current life daughter.
Here is another one.

M asked about a previous life. Cancer is again rising so the Moon would signify her. In Capricorn she would be female in that life as well, in the 7th house, someone’s wife.
Pluto is in the 7th, in Aquarius so would be her husband in that life.
Pluto is the ruler of the 5th but she does not have any children in this life. By checking Pluto’s degree position against the charts of her current life family, I worked out that it represented her current life father in law.
As 7th ruler, Saturn would be M’s current life partner. It is placed in Aries so would again be a man.
Saturn is in the 9th, which is the 3rd from the 7th, so would be M’s that life husband’s brother.
So M’s current partner would be his own father’s brother in that life.
The Moon being opposite the Ascendant is again clearly suggesting some marital problems.
The Moon is trine Venus in the 10th house, so M was having an affair with someone at work.
Venus is in Taurus so this affair was with a woman.
Who was Venus in M’s current life? As 4th house ruler it could be her mother.
I am always cross checking these past life horary findings. Just like I do with any horary, I need to see a strong connection between any significator’s sign position and the person’s natal chart.
I couldn’t find any connections between this Venus and M’s mother’s chart.
However, it turns out that a similar thing happened in this life, M had an affair with a woman and she was a Taurus.
Venus in the horary is the 11th house ruler, which is the 5th from the 7th so extra marital affair.
The possible combinations thrown up by a past life horary are many and varied.
All of us have played many different roles, been born in different parts of the world, have had many different kinds of relationships, some conventional, others not so.
If you google unusual celebrity soulmates it’s likely that one of the first ones to come up will be Holland Taylor and Sarah Paulson.
These two American actresses have an age difference of 32 years, and they first met 10 years ago when Sarah was 40 and Holland was aged 72.
When talking about their connection Holland said “I’ve been really wrestling with this lately because most of my relationships have been with women and given my generation I don’t like talking about them because I don’t like talking about the politics of it all because I’m not political about it. I think we’re ridiculous in this country about it. Ridiculous. And so, it’s awkward because if I talk about relationships in my life or people that have been in my life, or somebody I’ve been seeing for a while or this, that, and the other thing, I’d like to be able to just say that, without having to stop and say, ‘So have you come out?’ No, I haven’t come out because I am out. I live out.”
What does this living out look like from an astrological perspective?

Venus in Aquarius would point to the desire to attract unusual partners. Venus opposite Pluto and forming a T Square with an apex 7th house Moon, would focus this as the most powerful theme of Holland Taylor’s life.
This was very strongly triggered when her progressed Venus was again in her T Square, in square to itself and Pluto.
This occurred at the same time as her progressed Sun formed a sextile with her Venus, so clearly this would be her connection with her soulmate, the most important relationship of her life.
This happened in 2015 when she began her relationship with Sarah Paulson.
Although this wasn’t their first meeting.
That occurred 10 years earlier at a party while they were both dating other women. In 2005, Holland’s progressed Mars was conjunct her Venus.
With all of these I have to stress that as this method moves so slowly (a day for a year), these would both be once in a lifetime progressions.
What about Sarah Paulson?

Sarah’s Sun is conjunct Holland’s Mars.
Her Mars is sextile Holland’s Venus.
Her Venus and Ascendant form a Grand Trine with Holland’s 7th house Sun.
Sarah’s first relationship with a woman was with actress Cherry Jones which began in 2004 when her progressed Mars was conjunct her Sun.
She first met Holland while dating Cherry when her progressed Venus was conjunct her Moon.
In 2015, when she and Holland came together her progressed Venus had moved on to sextile her Sun.
So both Holland and Sarah had the biggest progressions of their life on first meeting and 10 years later when they began their relationship.
But it doesn’t end there either.
If we progress Holland Taylor’s chart forward 31 years to December 17th 1974 when Sarah was born.

Holland’s progressed Sun was exactly (1/4 degree orb) sextile Sarah’s own Sun.

Bizarrely if we regress Sarah’s own chart back to Holland’s birth we get exactly the same thing.
Sarah’s regressed Sun is sextile Holland’s Sun (with an orb of less than 1/3 degree).
Her regressed Moon is also conjunct Holland’s Mars.
Sarah’s regressed Venus is at 25.54 Scorpio.
Fast forward 72 years to when Sarah and Holland began their relationship, Sarah’s progressed Venus was at 25.54 Aquarius, exactly square to that position.
So despite their age difference, we can see a clear soulmate connection when each of them was born, when they met and when they started their relationship.
No doubt they have shared many relationships before, playing different roles.
The most important theme in Holland Taylor’s chart is identified by her T Square.
If we take Holland’s chart back to when her regressed Sun formed a Grand Cross with her T square opposite her 7th house Moon and in square aspect to her Venus we reach March 1868.
Taking Sarah’s chart back to the same date her regressed Sun was conjunct her Ascendant and her regressed Moon was conjunct her 7th house Jupiter.
Clearly this would be an important date in their past life relationship.
What roles would they have been playing in that life?
Who can say but I cast a horary for the moment that question occurred to me and the chart ruler Mars was in Sagittarius, and Venus was in Scorpio in the 7th house.
So maybe Holland was a man in that life and Sarah was his wife.
We are not just confined to this life’s box, we are souls who have chosen to step in and out of many of them.
But now thanks to this discovery of how progressions and regressions work, we can use astrology to think outside of this one and understand our true nature.
