Astrology is essentially very simple, but that doesn’t stop many astrologers from vastly oversimplifying it.
This particularly occurs in the field of mundane astrology.
People who wouldn’t dream of predicting for a famous person without referring at least to their Sun sign, seem happy to come up with all kinds of prophecies for the world at large without even considering the nativity of the countries in it.
And a lot of these prognostications are based on Pluto’s change of sign from Capricorn to Aquarius. They conclude that the last 15 years has been good for bankers, corporates and right wing populism, conveniently ignoring the fact that the very first thing that happened when Pluto moved into Capricorn in 2008 was the global banking crisis which sent many of them to the wall.
They therefore assume that Pluto in Aquarius will be good for communes, astrology and left wing idealism.
How so ? Have you ever actually met an Aquarian ?
It is the sign of ideals, and many Aquarians have a strong theoretical sense of what is right and radical, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they exist on the liberal wing of the political arena.
Aquarius has a very effective PR department in the world of astrology and the type of character they dream up for themselves is like the American philosophy professor, feminist and radical activist, Angela Davis.
In fact her chart was used in the very first book I read on Astrology by Alan Oken as a ” typical ” Aquarian.
This was placed alongside Joseph Stalin’s that, like my own, had the Sun in Capricorn in the 12th house and Capricorn rising.
In fact it turns out that Uncle Joe wasn’t a Capricorn at all, he was a Sagittarius with Pisces rising, but a whole generation of astrologers are probably still convinced that he was the perfect example of a goat.
It’s true that Angela Davis was a Sun / Moon Aquarius but her radicalism had more to do with the fact that her Sun was part of a Kite formation including a Mars / Uranus conjunction, Neptune and Pluto.
And for every Angela there would be a Nicolae
Maybe a case can be made for Aquarians being Uranian types or Saturnian, as both planets are said to rule the sign.
If so perhaps ruthless Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu’s Sun / Saturn opposition puts him in the latter camp.
But he is not the exception that proves the rule.
My database contains 148 timed charts of Nazis. By some distance the most common Sun sign is Aquarius with 18.
In fact the whole Nazi experience was dominated by Aquarius.
The chart for the start of the Third Reich is both a Saturnian and Uranian Aquarian.
The Sun’s conjunction with Saturn shows the harshness of right wing ideology but the T square with an apex Uranus also points to the socialist roots of the Nazi movement.
The Sun / Saturn in Aquarius, Venus in Capricorn opposite Pluto and square Uranus, an Aries Moon and a Mars / Jupiter conjunction all point to an uncaring and aggressive regime with a strong sense of racial purity and regressive political idealism.
But this article is principally about downfall and the role that Pluto plays.
The Nazi defeat in World War Two happened in 1945.
Transit Pluto was at 10 Leo, opposite the Third Reich Sun then.
They say there’s nothing new under the Sun, so its interesting how similar the chart for Adolf’s Reich was to Otto’s one.
The First Reich was the Holy Roman Empire that is generally agreed to have started with the coronation of Otto 1 in 962 AD.
Again we have the Sun, Mercury and Saturn in Aquarius.
Venus is also opposite Pluto, the Moon is in a Fire sign and Mars is in aspect with Jupiter.
Adolf Hitler spoke of a Thousand Year Reich which lasted for only 12. Otto’s managed over 800 until it was destroyed in 1806 by Napoleon.
Pluto was square to the Otto Coronation Moon in 1806 but there was also the small matter of the Saturn / Uranus conjunction of that year, falling opposite its Mars.
The next reich was designed by another Otto.
If Otto 1 played the Adolf role in the 1st Reich, Otto Von Bismarck did the same for the 2nd one as chancellor of Germany.
Not wishing to overstate it but there is an Aquarian quality to this one as well, with Venus conjunct the Midheaven in the sign and the Sun opposite Uranus.
But the most difficult aspect in this chart would be Mars square to an 8th house Saturn.
It was this one that transit Pluto picked out in 1918 when Kaiser Wilhelm’s Germany were defeated in the First World War, as it was exactly square to that Mars and opposite Saturn.
The Empire was replaced by the Weimar Republic. This was a democratically elected system of government but it was severely hampered by the massive financial burden of war reparations imposed on the country by the Allies. This caused a level of hyper inflation not seen anywhere else in history.
Most historians recognise that the seeds for the growth of Nazism were planted at the start of the Weimar Republic and the chart shows that clearly.
Aquarius is rising with Uranus close to the Ascendant, so we could say the appearance of democracy was important, but the Ascendant was opposite Neptune which creates an illusionary feel and this focuses by T square onto an 8th house Scorpio Sun, indicating the financial burden that would trigger these strong unconscious resentments in the German population that the Nazis would take full advantage of.
The Republic ended with Hitler’s takeover in 1933 when transit Pluto was opposite the Weimar Moon.
In fact that whole Third Reich T square smashed down on that Moon hard.
So it’s certainly true that Pluto’s transits can bring about revolutions and the downfall of regimes, but we have to be very specific about looking at which ones might be due for a bit of re-education.
The coming few years will see Pluto make powerful transits to the charts of China and Taiwan and Australia.
Perhaps its better to wait and see how these take shape before we make our minds up about the flavour of the next 20 years.
