Horary – The Art Of A Vertical Science

We are all conditioned to think, measure and experience things occurring in time.

But what if, as the both the mystics and quantum physicists tell us, time as we believe it, does not actually exist? That everything occurs in an eternal now.

If this is true, we have no means of measure and our day to day lives lose the meaning we have carefully and painstakingly built for them.

We have no structures to fall back on, no compass to guide us through this quantum Universe.

It’s a scary thought right? But it needn’t be.

We just have to change to a different type of measurement.

Astrology gives us this possibility. We can look at our own charts and see how the moment of our birth is interacting with the here and now, and try and make the adjustments to our thinking that are required by our transits.

But our natal chart still ties us to that moment of our birth. A horary chart does not. It is an instant capture of the Universal qualities of a moment in time, a quantum jump of a combination of planets many millions of miles away, straight into the mind of the questioner.

But how can we, who are used to thinking in horizontal ways, trust this vertical download?

By starting with what we know.

The one thing we do know for sure is that the chart ruler signifies the person asking the question, so it’s placing by house in the horary should identify the nature of the question being asked.

If we are being generous and say that any question could be covered by two houses rather than just one, we have a 1 in 6 chance of the ruler being in one of them.

Another thing we probably know is the natal positions of the client’s Sun, Moon and Ascendant.

I have been studying horary for over 40 years and my experience is that in order to provide consistently reliable results in practice, the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or ruler of a horary should fall within 3 degrees of one of those natal placements.

There is a 1 in 5 chance of one of these combinations occurring.

So for both of these conditions to be met we are looking at a chance occurrence of 1 in 30, which if you think about it is a very demanding requirement.

If either of these conditions are not met, we have to question the validity of that moment as representing the question.

If both of these conditions are met we can seriously trust that we are on the right track and that the quantum nature of a horary is being revealed to us. An accuracy level of 29 times out of 30 far exceeds any astrophysicist’s reliability measurement.

And this is true whatever the question is. We can use horary to ask anything at all, the type of question is only limited by our own imagination.

I have always been intrigued by beliefs around reincarnation. For me it is the one spiritual perspective that makes most sense for an astrological worldview.

If we all come into this life with such different characters and life paths that are already set and can be predicted at birth, there must have been something that happened before that moment that has contributed to these symbolic patterns.

My only problem has been with the many attempts made by astrologers from all kinds of traditions to find a way of trying to understand those past life conditions from a current life natal chart.

But in recent years I have discovered a method involving reversed secondary progressions (which I call regressions) and past solar returns that can reveal a lot about important turning point moments in our previous incarnations, particularly ones that are related to karmic themes that we are carrying over into this one.

For an explanation of this method and an example of it working in practice see Y Are We Here?

I have applied this method for many clients and one of the most common questions asked is have they had a past life relationship with a particular person in their current one.

With something like this I would always start with a horary because that would reveal a lot.

As horary practitioners know, every relationship in our lives can be ascribed to the ruler of the house associated with it.

My contention is that a question about someone in a past life would be shown by the house placing of that ruler.

For example if the question is about the client’s current husband or wife, we would look at the ruler of the 7th house. If it is placed in the 5th, this would indicate that partner would have been their child in a previous life.

I recently had a client who felt that her baby daughter might have been a reincarnation of her own grandmother.

This was the horary.

Horary practitioners would instantly point out that with an early degree rising it is unsafe to judge the chart.

But my response would be why does this chart have one degree rising? Maybe the answer is that the client’s daughter is only one year old and is just starting out own life and the horary is simply reflecting that perfectly.

Can we see the client in the chart? Yes we can because the horary Sun at 26.51 Scorpio is a mere 2 degrees away from her natal Moon (28.50 Scorpio).

How about the ruler?

Horary is practiced mostly by traditional astrologers who would instantly look at Mars as ruler of Scorpio.

Why is Mars in the 10th house?

There seems no obvious reason for that. Maybe we could say that Leo has some kind of natural rulership over children via the 5th house and that in the early degrees of this sign it could be representing her daughter.

But it seems to me that the horary is pointing us to the real significator, the modern ruler of Scorpio, Pluto.

Pluto is in the final minutes of Capricorn in the 4th house of family so obviously that is a reference to the grandmother.

It has been my experience that the modern rulerships work better in horary and this is yet another example of that.

But maybe both rulers have something to say here.

Mars has separated from an aspect with Pluto.

Again strict traditionalists would have a problem with this as horary rules usually restrict applying or separating aspects to the signs that the planets are in at the time. So while an opposition from Cancer to Capricorn, or Leo to Aquarius would count, this one cannot.

But my principle is to look at what the chart is trying to tell you.

If there is a past relationship between Mars and Pluto, it is one that belongs to a previous life so it makes total sense that Mars has moved on into the next sign.

How do we find the baby in the chart?

As Aquarius is on the cusp she would be signified by either Saturn or Uranus.

Saturn is in Pisces in the 5th house and Uranus is in Taurus in the 7th.

How do we know which it is?

We look at the child’s natal chart. She has the Sun at 25.58 Taurus so it is obviously Uranus (25.10 Taurus) that represents her in this horary.

So this is another example of the horary chart itself telling us where to look. With Pluto being at the end of Capricorn on the IC obviously referring to the client asking about a reincarnation as a grandmother and Uranus occurring in the same degree as her daughter’s Sun we have a clear sign that the Universe wants us to use modern rulerships.

Why is Uranus in the 7th? Are we suggesting that L’s daughter was her partner in a previous life?

That would be a possibility but another way of looking at it is that the 7th house is the 4th from the 4th.

So if the 4th would be the client’s father, the 7th would be his parent.

As Uranus is in a female sign in the 7th, it’s clearly saying her daughter is a reincarnation of her grandmother.

What are the odds of a horary saying this by chance? I have worked it out to be 2,700 to 1 against.

So I told my client that I had no doubt at all that her baby daughter was a reincarnation of her grandmother.

The horary has more to say about this question.

The client and her daughter are American. Her family comes from Korea, father and grandmother were born there and both emigrated to the US before she was born.

The Moon in Cancer in the 9th house obviously reflects this theme.

With the Moon’s opposition to Venus there does also seem to be some sense of separation here and having to leave someone behind.

This is reinforced by the fact that the Sun is separating from an opposition to Uranus.

As we have already surmised, Uranus signifies the baby daughter in her last life. If we turn the chart so that the 5th house becomes the Ascendant, the Sun is the ruler of the 7th.

So the Sun represents her husband in that previous life.

So I told my client that it looked like her grandfather had been left behind in Korea or perhaps he and her grandmother had separated or he had died before the move occurred.

Her reply confirmed that her grandfather had died in Korea before the family left for the US (a fact that I could not have known).

She also said that there were unconfirmed family rumours that her grandfather was not the biological father of her own father.

The horary seems to indicate this. There is clearly an opposition between Uranus (baby and grandmother) and the Sun (grandfather).

Also the planet that signifies the client’s father would be Saturn as ruler of the 4th house.

Saturn is placed in Pisces in the 5th house, suggesting there is some mystery surrounding the circumstances of his birth.

Saturn is also at the apex of a T square based on a Mercury/Jupiter opposition.

If we take the 5th house as signifying the client’s baby daughter/grandmother, Mercury is the ruler of the 5th from the 5th, so Saturn (the father) could have been the product of an affair.

No doubt there are many more things that could be read from this horary chart. It is a complex one with four powerful oppositions.

But that is the quantum nature of horary, we are only limited by our capacity to read the chart. When you are taking measurements in the vertical dimension, anything is possible, even finding out that your baby was your granny.
