An Ill Wind – Uranus And The Political Expediency Of War

It is a sad fact that political leaders will only engage in war if they believe they will benefit from it.

Their assessment may be accurate and pragmatic or ideological and delusional. In some cases it can be a combination of both.

The current situation has definite similarities with a conflict 40 odd years ago, with an invasion aimed at expelling a hostile and controlling foreign power which ended in ignominious defeat.

The opposition between the Aries Sun and the Mars / Saturn conjunction in Libra was clearly responsible.

And there was only ever going to be one winner.

Margaret Thatcher was having an exact Mars Return on the very day the Argentines invaded the Falkland Islands.

Some leaders might have responded “where?” and ignored it or negotiated a financial settlement that kept everyone happy.

Thatcher had been in power almost 3 years and was languishing in the polls, so she wrapped herself in the Union Jack and reached for her inner Boadicea, sending the might of the Imperial Navy to the South Atlantic and Rupert Murdoch’s Sun to vanquish the Argies.

Saturn was within 5 minutes of Thatcher’s natal Sun.

Some people might think this would indicate defeat, but this would be to misunderstand the importance of Saturn in her chart. Its close conjunction with her Ascendant adds steel to the Plutonian Lady

And it’s also worth checking its transit to that of her opponent.

Born less than 9 months after Thatcher, President Leopold Galtieri had seized control of Argentina by military junta.

His synastry with her was powerfully challenging.

His Cancer Sun is square hers and his Aries Mars is opposite her Sun.

Transit Saturn was conjunct Thatcher’s Sun during the Falklands crisis but square to Galtieri’s and opposite his Mars.

So there was only going to be one winner.

Thatcher rode on the coat tails of this absurd war and won the election of the following year as a result of the patriotic fervour generated by it.

Galtieri was removed from power at the end of the war and eventually convicted of war crimes.

So when it comes to warfare it pays to have whatever planet that’s causing it conjunct your personal placements rather than opposite them.

For the Falklands it was Saturn, with the current horrors in the Gaza Strip, its Uranus.

Five weeks ago at the start of the war, I posted this article Uranus Hamas Away, containing these charts for Israel and Palestine.

Note the opposition between the Sun at 23 Taurus in the chart for Israel and the Palestine Sun at the same degree of Scorpio.

With Uranus heading towards this point and Jupiter joining it in the Spring, this is a conflict that will benefit Israel.

It may have been triggered by an attack by Hamas, but the inconvenient truth is that it suits the Israeli government and has given them an excuse to launch an assault on Gaza that will, in all likelihood, drive their political opponents into submission.

Without the initial encroachment and the hostage taking, an invasion like this would never have gained the global political support couched in “right to self defence” terminology.

It is a moot point that self defence might have more to do with using their much vaunted intelligence services to anticipate and prevent such an attack, because the astrology of the situation is clearly on the side of revenge warfare.

It wouldn’t be such a stretch to imagine those secret services having foreknowledge of the Hamas attack but allowing it to happen anyway, because it gave them an opportunity to retaliate big time.

In terms of their overall objectives, it seems pretty certain that this war will suit Israel far more than Palestine.

But you don’t need to be the leader of a nation involved in the conflict to receive a war benefit.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has the Sun at 22 Taurus, close to the Israel Sun and opposite the Palestinian one so he would have no trouble working out which side he’s on.

His Sun is opposite Uranus. Whenever there is this natal aspect between the two, the early 40s will be a time of great change and upheaval, because the transit Uranus will be conjunct the Sun.

Sunak became Prime Minister just over a year ago with Uranus at 17 Taurus.

Since June of this year it has been conjunct his Sun.

It has already caused him considerable difficulty, not least last week when it retrograded back over his Sun and was opposed by the Sun and Mars in Scorpio, unleashing the full force of Cruella Braverman doing her impersonation of Adolf Hitler.

The Uranus transit lasts until May 2024. It comes back to 23 Taurus (opposing itself) in January 2025 but after that the whole thing is over.

It doesn’t take an astrologer to see that once it has gone, so will he be. In fact it would make sense for Sunak to leave politics altogether once his party are ceremoniously dumped from office.

If Rishi Sunak does have an astrologer, they should be explaining Uranus in terms of the need to move in a radically new direction, but it’s more likely that they would be encouraging him to call a general election on Thursday 11th April.

With Jupiter approaching his Sun, April would be a good month for Sunak.

An election called on the 11th would place it rising with the Moon in the same sign.

Granted Venus (1st house ruler) for the government would be in detriment in the 12th house, but Mars (the co ruler of the 7th) for the opposition is conjunct Saturn.

The Tories still wouldn’t win, probably because Pluto co significator of Labour is in a new sign in the 10th, but this chart would enable them to hold on to some of their seats.

The run up to a possible April election would also be difficult for the Labour leader.

Transit Saturn will be opposite Keir Starmer’s Sun in February and early March, so an April election would put the Tories in a position to benefit from the Labour leader’s difficulties.

If an election were held tomorrow, the polls indicate that Labour would win with a landslide 441 seats to the Tories 135, so what could happen in the next few months that could signal Starmer’s Saturn experience alongside Sunak’s Jupiter one.

My feeling is it’s already started and is related to the Palestinian situation.

When you have such a massive lead in the polls and plenty of experience of your party throwing away positions of advantage, it’s hardly surprising that Keir Starmer wants to play it safe on every front.

And the “antisemitism” card was played to great effect against his predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn.

Right wing parties the world over have jumped on the Israel “right to self defence” bandwagon whilst taking care to paint their opponents as being soft on terrorists.

Whatever his personal feelings, Starmer is not going to allow Sunak to do the same to him, so is playing a straight bat on the Palestinian question.

But he’s between a rock and a hard place, because many Labour front benchers have already resigned over the opposition leader’s failure to call openly for a ceasefire.

There may well be other issues coming up over the next few months that compound Starmer’s Saturn transit frustrations, but my feeling is it will be events related to Israel that will cause most of the trouble.

Intriguingly there’s a very similar situation going on in Australia.

Prime Minister and Labor leader, Anthony Albanese, born exactly 6 months after Keir Starmer will also have Saturn transiting his Sun at the same time.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has his Sun opposite Rishi Sunak’s so will also be experiencing a Jupiter / Uranus transit in April / May.

Perhaps it’s the Sun / Jupiter conjunction in Scorpio but Dutton has wasted no time in an all out culture wars assault, appealing to the lowest of Australian values.

The No Vote in the Voice Referendum was almost entirely down to his “it’s ok to be a racist” campaign. And Dutton is using that victory to paint Albanese as soft on the enemies of Australia and the true world order.

As a Piscean, Anthony Albanese’s strength is his compassion and adaptability, but it does make it easier for his opponents to claim he is too weak to hold the office.

While Albanese was in China, trying to improve relations after a decade of the Coalition’s tub thumping, evil empire stuff and the suggestion that he might not be a keen supporter of Israel genocide, Dutton (who’s own modus operandi is to create as much conflict as possible to polarise opinions) is taking every opportunity say that the Prime Minister supports the forces of anarchy and terror.

As these transits build over the next few months you can see these themes developing on either side of the world.

Albanese might cope better than Starmer however, because Saturn is conjunct his Sun rather than opposite it.

And Jupiter and Uranus being opposite Dutton’s Sun might see him gain less benefit than Sunak who has them conjunct his.

Rishi Sunak and Peter Dutton may be able to ride an unexpected war bonus in the first half of 2024 but in the end I feel that they will go the same way.

Even an ill wind has to blow itself out.
