Treading A Fine Line – The Irish Election

Predicting political elections that are close in the polls is a tricky business, that’s why so many astrologers avoid it.

We face many sceptics who are only too ready to ridicule our subject, so sometimes it’s easier just to sit one out.

It’s understandable because they feel that if they get one wrong, their own astrological method will be doubted.

I have deep unshakeable confidence in my own method, not least because it is simple and based on transits of the slower moving planets.

If I get a prediction wrong, I don’t respond by claiming that someone gave the wrong birthdata and blocking anyone that points it out.

It is simply because at the time I wasn’t sufficiently detached to see my own subjectivity.

Since 2021, I have predicted Donald Trump’s win in 2024, because he had Jupiter conjunct his Sun.

I also flagged up the fact that Joe Biden would certainly lose that election owing to Pluto being square to his Moon.

I predicted he would pass the baton on to Kamala Harris, even the very day he would drop out of the race. But at this point my overwhelming desire to see a woman of colour become President rather than an orange fascist, led me to clutch at some tenuous astrological straws suggesting it might happen.

I make no apology for this naïveté, the most important thing is not who predicts things right or wrong but that we all use every situation to tighten our grasp of what actually works in astrology.

In Trump’s case we can see that Jupiter conjunct his Sun overpowers any other astrological indications, whether they are progressions or profections.

Everyone will be profoundly affected by this simple transit, whether they live in the USA or not.

With all due respect to the people who live there, the same could not be said about the coming election in Ireland.

I have to declare a preference for social democratic, left leaning parties anywhere in the world because I believe that every victory, even the small ones, counts in the global anti fascist struggle.

But I am able to put those views to one side and examine the Irish election from a purely astrological perspective.

It’s also helpful that I don’t know that much about the politics of the country, so would not have my judgement swayed by that.

What I do know is that Ireland is currently run by a coalition of three parties, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens.

Coalitions are the rule, in fact to find a situation where one party had an overall majority we have to go back over 40 years.

It seems that the current one exists mainly in order to keep one party in particular out of power.

With its roots firmly in Irish Republicanism both in Dublin and north of the border, it’s hardly suprising that the essence of the Sinn Fein chart is one of freedom and rebellion.

The Sun in Sagittarius opposite Jupiter and sextile Mars in Aquarius with the close conjunction of the Moon and Uranus is one of the most revolutionary charts I’ve seen for a political party.

My first thought when I see a chart like this is “what happened when Pluto conjoined its Sun?

This happened in 1997-98 and was obviously the Good Friday Agreement of 10 April 1998, which “set up an inclusive devolved government in Northern Ireland, and altered the Dublin government’s constitutional claim to the whole island in Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution of Ireland.

At the 1997 Irish general election, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin was elected to the Dáil. In doing so, he became the first person under the “Sinn Féin” banner to be elected to Leinster House since 1957, and the first since 1922 to take their seat. Ó Caoláin’s entry to the Dáil marked the beginning of a continuous Sinn Féin presence in the Republic of Ireland’s national political bodies.

Which was obviously a massive turning point in the party’s history.

And with Pluto heading to form a conjunction with that Mars at 7 Aquarius, Sinn Fein could be heading for another one. But not yet as this doesn’t kick in until 2027 – 29.

Sinn Fein is currently having a difficult moment in the polls.

At the beginning of 2023 it was polling at 33% with a 10% lead over any other party and looked very much as if it was ready to take a place in government.

Currently the polls are showing the party at 19%.

Both trends are down to one person.

Party leader, Mary Lou McDonald has been credited with making Sinn Fein electable. Through most of 2023 she had Jupiter conjunct her Sun as the party’s support was between 30-33%.

In April 2024 this transit ended and was replaced by Saturn square to her Mars.

The European election in June was a disastrous showing for the party and there has been no recovery since then.

This also coincided with transit Pluto being square to McDonald’s Moon.

As both of these transits come back for more in the early months of the New Year, it’s looking likely that she will have to step down. So I am expecting Sinn Fein to do badly in this election.

Who will benefit from Sinn Féin’s expected poor showing?

It’s unlikely to be the party that held the strongest vote in the last election, Fine Gael.

This is simply because Saturn is opposing it’s Sun in the same way that it is squaring Mary McDonald’s Mars.

It’s interesting to look at the synastry between the charts of Sinn Fein and Fine Gael. The latter’s Mars at 8 Scorpio is square to the former’s at 7 Aquarius, so maybe Pluto’s transit in a few years time will cause a shift in the power balance between them.

The current leader of Fine Gael is Simon Harris.

Like his American namesake, Harris has Sun in Libra opposite Moon in Aries.

He also has Mars at 4 Aquarius in square aspect to Pluto, so we would have to expect some major changes to occur when this relationship is reinforced by the latter’s transit.

But again this is the future, not the present.

What about the other main party?

Fianna Fáil is the centre right party in the Irish coalition. As we would expect with the Sun in Taurus opposite Saturn and Moon in Cancer.

While Sinn Féin’s Saturn induced nosedive in the polls this year has chiefly benefited Independents and Fine Gael, the Fianna Fáil share of the vote has been steady but unspectacular.

With transit Uranus conjunct the party’s Sun in this election, you would expect that to change.

The leader Micheal Martin has some Uranus transits of his own.

We don’t have a birthtime for Martin but anything late in the day would put Uranus in opposition to his Moon.

As Uranus is part of a wide T square involving his Moon, Venus and Mars, we should expect this election to be a significant turning point in his career.

But in what direction?

Maybe a look at the contest chart for the election will help.

The only problem with this chart is which planets signify which of the parties?

When there is one party in power it is usually identified by the Ascendant ruler and one main opposition party would be the Descendant ruler, but here we have a coalition.

I feel that Uranus would represent Fianna Fáil as it is in the exact degree of the party’s Sun.

On that basis, it’s probably fair to ascribe the above chart Sun to Sinn Fein as they are only a couple of degrees apart.

Perhaps the Moon would be Fianna Fáil as it is widely conjunct the party’s Mars and is conjunct Martin’s Moon.

Uranus is right on the Descendant, the Moon is applying to conjunct the Ascendant and oppose Uranus.

There is no connection between either and the Sun, so my take on this is that these two opposing major parties will again cobble together a coalition which will leave Sinn Fein on the sidelines.

However I expect Independent parties to make a much bigger impact in this election and feel this may tip the balance of power in the coalition in favour of Fianna Fáil.

In just over a week’s time we will find out.

Just like with Donald Trump in 2016, 2020 and 2024, there may be winners and losers, but everyone of us get another opportunity to tighten our grasp of mundane astrology and a stronger understanding of our Fine subject.
