I have spent the last fifty years working as an astrologer and complimentary health practitioner. In that time I have come across a great many healers with genuine gifts and experience.
I have also encountered a few con artists who prey on the gullibility of their clients as well as teachers and healers who might have really had something useful to offer but have become over zealous and obsessional about their practices and their net effect on their followers has been negative.
I believe that it is fairly easy to distinguish between those who genuinely have something beneficial to offer and those who cause more harm than good.
It also helps if you have access to their astrology.
Aquarius is probably the one sign that would most be associated with New Age practices, they are idealistic and unconventional, offering an alternative view of the world.
However it is well to remember that as a Fixed sign, and it has twin rulers, Saturn and Uranus. A Uranian Aquarian would identify strongly with the above view.
With a Saturnian, their ideals can easily become dogmatic and rigid. They can also believe that these beliefs apply in all situations regardless of the individual circumstances.
How to tell which type is which? Check the aspects of the two planets.

With a very close conjunction between the Sun and Saturn, Hongchi Xiao is undoubtedly in the latter category.
These two form a powerful tight T Square with Mars in Leo and an apex Neptune in the noon chart 6th house.
I don’t have a birthtime for Xiao but the noon chart gives the Sun/Neptune square exact to the minute. With an apex Neptune in the 6th house it was inevitable that he would see himself as a highly evolved spiritual healer.
Hongchi Xiao was a practitioner of Paida lajin, which is described as “a self-healing philosophy that involves the patient being slapped or slapping themselves repeatedly in the belief that it releases toxins from the blood.
The therapy “has roots in traditional Chinese medicine, although critics say it has no scientific basis. Paida involves patting (“pai” in Chinese) and slapping (“da”) one’s skin, while lajin involves assuming various postures to stretch one’s muscles.
A video of one of Xiao’s workshops, recorded in Malaysia, shows people taking part in the therapy, forcefully slapping different parts of their body, particularly joint areas and the head, until their skin turns red or begins to look bruised.”
Maybe this method can be seen in his chart by Mars in Leo, the other planet in Xiao’s T square.
“Hongchi Xiao, 61, from California, USA, had promoted the practice as a ‘cure’ for diabetes at the workshop in Seend, Wiltshire in 2016.”
Danielle Carr-Gomm, who had Type 1 diabetes, died on 20 October, 2016 from diabetic ketoacidosis after she stopped taking her insulin at the event.
Xiao led the workshop and assured Mrs Carr-Gomm that her condition could be healed Paida Lajin,
Mrs Carr-Gomm was congratulated by Xiao when she announced on the first day of the workshop that she had stopped taking her insulin.
But she became very unwell after she stopped her injections and Xiao neither told her to start taking her insulin or sought any medical assistance despite assuming a position of leadership over her care.
Xiao openly criticised the use of insulin and congratulated Mrs Carr-Gomm on her decision to stop using it at the workshop.
Xiao’s previous experience with Mrs Carr-Gomm at a workshop in Bulgaria demonstrated that she would become seriously ill very quickly without insulin and that beginning her injections again would reverse that decline. Xiao also knew that Mrs Carr-Gomm would listen to his advice to start taking insulin again.
Her death was as a direct result of not taking her insulin injections at the slapping therapy workshop.”
This week, Hongchi Xiao was convicted of gross negligence manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment as it was proved that he “knew the consequences of Danielle Carr-Gomm’s decision to stop taking insulin could be fatal – he had seen it before.
The prosecution successfully applied for bad character evidence to be made admissible, so that members of the jury could hear about Xiao’s previous conviction in Australia which arose from strikingly similar circumstances and followed the death of a child also deprived of insulin.
Xiao knew of the fatal consequences of the failure to take insulin in the case of boy who died the year before. That incident is clear evidence of knowledge of an obvious risk of death from a failure to take insulin.
Jurors heard how Xiao had led a similar workshop in Hurstville, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, in April 2015.
At that seminar, he described Paida Lajin as 100 per cent effective against Type 1 Diabetes, and that its healing effects meant it was no longer necessary to take insulin as it would be generated naturally.
Among those attending were the parents of a six-year-old boy called Aidan. At the workshop, Aidan’s parents stopped giving him insulin and he became extremely unwell, with symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis.
Xiao told the parents that it was part of the ‘self-healing body adjustment’, but Aidan died as a direct consequence of not receiving his insulin.”
In a chart as Fixed as Hongchi Xiao’s, a Jupiter transit would simply make him more of a zealot, and it was conjunct his Mars and opposite his Sun/Saturn when Aidan died.
It has taken a long time for this crime to come to conviction, but perhaps it is the result of Pluto’s conjunction with his South Node.
Hopefully its move into Aquarius will give a lot of these new age con artists the karmic slap that they deserve.
