If you are reading this article, I will assume you are utterly convinced that astrology works. If you aren’t you should probably read all the other articles on this site first.
But also I think it’s important that we regularly remind each other how powerful and radical this assumption is.
For astrology to work at all, even a tiny bit, there must be some kind of purpose to all of our lives.
This would also mean that there must be a reason why some people have a certain type of chart with the life experiences that it indicates, and others have different ones.
That being the case, there must be something that conditions or at least contributes to the reasons why this occurs, therefore there has to be something before this life.
So past lives of some sort or other are a logical extension of astrology.
If the experiences from these lives have contributed to our current ones, there must be some way of tapping into them and understanding them astrologically, at least in the way they contribute to our current life patterns.
Transits to our birthchart will show us what the Universe is requiring of us at any point in our lives.
Secondary progressions are different from transits.
This is not the Universe interacting with our chart placements as we go through life. Progressions are something that we bring into this life with us.
With the one day per year method, they describe an unfolding of something that is inside us at birth.
My research into Secondary Progressions has shown that they coincide with important people from our soul group coming into our lives in order to help us negotiate our way through our transits.
These meetings appear to have been pre-arranged before this life started.
A logical extension of this is that we should be able to see when these people made an appearance in our past lives by taking them backwards, hence the technique of Secondary Regressions.
A few weeks ago I was contacted by a client, M who asked for a synastry report for her and her husband. She has two children from a previous marriage, as does he.

I will reproduce pieces of this report, to show the way I see the most important themes in M’s chart. Obviously M has given her permission for this.
“You have the Sun and Mercury in Gemini, the Moon and Ascendant in Leo, Venus in Aries and Mars in Libra.
If you wish to know more about how these placements describe your personality I suggest you look them up on the web, there are plenty of sites that offer these descriptions.
For me and for your questions the most important thing is the aspects and three of them in particular.
Your Sun (in Gemini in the 11th house) is opposite Uranus in the 5th house.
Your Venus (in Aries in the 10th house) is opposite Pluto in the 4th house.
Your Moon (in Leo in the 12th house) is square to Jupiter in the 4th house.
All of these indicate powerful themes of change particularly in areas around home, family, children and step children.
These themes will play a significant role in your life but they will play out particularly strongly when they are triggered by transits involving the slower moving planets that are part of them.
Any patterns that involve Uranus and Pluto are going to come to a head during one’s early to mid 40s.
This is often referred to as the mid life crisis, but it comes astrologically from the Uranus Half Return.
Uranus is the planet of change, an unusual and unconventional energy that is looking for new experience. It can be disruptive of the status quo because it wants something different to what is generally being served up.
As your Sun is opposite Uranus, change and rebellion will be an essential theme in your life. As your Sun is in the 11th house, you could be quite strongly politically motivated.
As Uranus is in your 5th house, this principle of change can be a creative and dramatic one which could see you being involved in the arts but it is also likely to focus on your home, family and children.
When Uranus makes its conjunction by transit to the Sun, there will be powerful changes in your life, that involve these areas.
This occurs during the years 2026 – 27.
This however is an energy that has been building since 2016 – 17 when Uranus was conjunct your Venus and you first met your husband.
Since then, Uranus has also aspected your Moon between 2019 – 20 when you got married.
On top of that the opposition between Venus and Pluto has also been triggered.
This is another pattern of change, particularly in romantic matters and also to do with career and family.
In 2020 – 21 , Pluto made its only transit of your life to Venus, a square aspect, so there would have been a significant upheaval and change in these areas then.
Since 2024, Pluto has been opposite your Moon, suggesting more profound change particularly around internal, emotional matters.
As Pluto has been operating in your 6th house, these stresses and changes could have had an impact on your health and your work.
These last 8 years have been the most intense of your life and this obviously coincides with your relationship with your husband so we should look at his chart and the synastry with your own.

Your husband has an exact Sun/Uranus conjunction in Virgo in the 3rd house.
These two are also exactly conjunct Venus and more widely conjunct Pluto.
This means that his life is also one that is subject to many changes. As Venus is involved this would be particularly true in terms of his relationships.
His Moon is in Capricorn on the cusp of the 7th house exactly opposite his Cancer Ascendant.
This opposition means that he is pulled in two very different directions between what he wants for his own life and his needs in relationship.
The most significant feature of all this comes when you put the two charts together.
Your Sun is at 5.40 Gemini, his Sun/Venus/Uranus conjunction is between 5.40 and 5.47 Virgo, exactly square your own.
This is a very powerful connection.
I have no doubt that there is a strong karmic connection around your relationship and you could be seen to be soulmates, although I believe I should clarify what I mean by that.
A soulmate is someone who is an important member of our soul group who contracts with us to make a very powerful appearance in our life in order to assist us with the themes that we have chosen to work with in this lifetime.
It is very significant that your husband is 19 years older than you.
This is because of the role of Uranus in your two charts.
The aspect between your Sun/Uranus and his combination is a square which is a challenging one.
Your Venus in Aries is also opposite his Mars in Libra.
Your Mars in Libra is also square his Moon and Ascendant.
The attraction between the two of you would have been intense and powerful, as if there was something bigger than both of you, compelling you to be together.
The odds against this kind of synastry occurring by chance are millions to one against.
When two people in a relationship have such tight synastry, it also means that they will experience the same transits very powerfully together.
This has already been the case for you both but will be much more so over the next 2-3 years because transit Uranus will be conjunct your Sun and square to your husband’s.
This will be compounded by Saturn and Neptune’s presence in square to your husband’s Moon and Ascendant and opposite your Mars.
When combined with your own Pluto/Moon transit, these are all so powerful and demand much change.”
The report went on to discuss M and H’s synastry with her children, but I won’t reproduce that here.
Another reason for her asking for a report was her concerns about the future for Estonia, particularly in terms of its relationship with Russia. So I will include some of that, as it would have general interest for many readers.
“It’s always important to bear in mind that astrology is not fate. We have free will through our responses.
Our transits will bring us a kind of symbolic fate. We are destined to experience something within the range of the planet impacting on us at the time.
But it is possible to make some degree of choice within that range.
When there are transits like this around for all of you, I try to think of a positive direction to work with this energy, because change is being demanded and the one thing we know for sure is that you can’t stay in the same situation as you are now in.
As Uranus will be conjunct your Sun, this is likely to be the biggest change of your life.
Perhaps one positive way to harness this energy for your whole family would be to leave Estonia and start a new life elsewhere.

The natal chart for your country has similarities to that of Ukraine which is hardly surprising as it came into being four days later.

Even so the dominant 7th house in both charts would not normally be expected because this is related to the time of day.
The 7th house in a nation’s chart relates to its enemies and both countries have a very powerful one in Russia.
For the Ukraine the 7th house Mercury/Venus/Jupiter/Sun conjunction is opposite its own Aquarius Moon and this was very strongly triggered when the war started.
The threat for Estonia is nothing near that for Ukraine but it is still worth noting that over the next year or two transit Saturn and Neptune will be square to the country’s Moon.
I don’t necessarily see it as an invasion, but I believe it is possible that a greater degree of control from Russia and interference with things in a political and financial way could occur.
Given that Estonia’s Moon at 5 Capricorn is exactly conjunct your husband’s own 7th house Moon, my feeling is that something could happen for him that is connected with the fate of the country and this could be the trigger for all of your Uranus transits. If it is possible for you to move somewhere else, I would give this some careful consideration.”
M agreed that after her marriage, her life had completely changed. She wanted to ask if there’s a way to know more about karmic relationship with her husband, so we arranged to do a Past Life Review.
I will reproduce that here.
“When taking an astrological look into a Past Life, the best place to start is with the chart for your current life.

You have asked to look into a past life connection with your husband.

You have strong synastry between you. The most obvious pattern that stands out is your Venus/Pluto opposition from Aries to Libra in the 10th to the 4th house which connects with his Mars/Jupiter opposition across the same signs and houses.
It is undoubtedly this pattern that has brought you together in this life because transit Pluto has formed a T – Square to it since the relationship began.
Such a connection must have a powerful past life theme. However we have to note the opposition between your Venus and his Mars, so a past life connection may have been a challenging one.
There seems to be a business/family theme here.
My method for looking into past lives is based on secondary progressions. It is using the same principle to go back in time from your birth which I call regressions.
The most important of these is always the regressed Sun.
For this review I am going to take your chart back to the point where the regressed Sun was conjunct your Venus.

Of course this would also mean that your Sun would have been opposite your 4th house Pluto, so we are talking about a massive family upheaval at the time.
This takes us to the year 1941, obviously during World War Two.
To check whether your husband was involved we regress his chart back to the same date.

His regressed Sun was square his Neptune then, but also his regressed Moon was in the 10th house exactly opposite his Pluto and also opposing Mercury and Uranus in the 4th, so not only was he there, he was also tightly involved in the same business/family themes.”
A Past Life Horary, will give us the most important themes of these past lives, particularly in terms of their relevance to our current situation.
I have written about the use of Horary Astrology to uncover past life themes before – see Is Horary A Method Of The Past?
When you request a past life review, this is the astrological equivalent of going for past life regression hypnotism.
You are accessing the deeply subconscious part of your brain that knows what your past life experiences were.
A horary for that moment will reproduce these in astrological code. So the chart will describe your past life experience.
Back to M’s review.
“In order to understand the themes around a past life, we can pick up a lot from a horary cast for the moment that you asked for one. This is that chart.

The Moon in this chart is approaching Full and opposite the Sun. It is placed in the 8th house with the Sun in the 2nd, so there is a theme of financial difficulties centred around this past life.
As Taurus is rising, you would be signified by Venus, in that same sign rising. This means that you would have been female in that life.
Venus is dignified in Taurus meaning you would have been a strong and successful character.
As 7th house ruler, your husband would be signified by Pluto.
Pluto is in Aquarius, so he would have been a man in that life. It is in the 9th house, so he would have come from abroad, but it is also conjunct the Midheaven, so he would have had a major impact on your career.
Venus is in close square aspect with Pluto, so the relationship between you would have been difficult and challenging and his likely impact on your career would not have been favourable.
Venus is in close sextile with a Mercury/Jupiter conjunction.
Mercury is the 5th house ruler, so would be one of your children, I suspect this would be your daughter. It is in Cancer in the 3rd house so she would have been your sister in that life.
Mercury is conjunct Jupiter, ruler of the 8th house.
The 8th is the 4th from the 5th, so Jupiter would be your daughter’s father, so your ex husband.
You and your sister (daughter this life) would have been in a family business together.
Jupiter is also in Cancer, so part of this business but in the 2nd house rather than the 3rd, so your ex in this life would not be an immediate family member, but would be a business partner.
Mercury is in exact quincunx with Pluto, so your sister (daughter) would also be in conflict with your husband in that life.
The next thing is to check if they were there at the time.

Your daughter’s regressed Venus, Mercury and Mars were all square to her current life Sun.
Her regressed Sun was also square her current Mercury, so she was definitely part of this life and must have been your sister back then.

Your ex’s regressed Moon was exactly conjunct his Sun so he was also definitely there and playing an important role.
I have a method of working out when people were born in a previous life, which is when the Sun regresses to an aspect with the current 4th house ruler.

This means you were born in 1881, making you aged 60 at the time of these events.

Applying the same principle to your husband would make him aged 44.

My method would also indicate that he died not long after in 1945.

Applying this to your ex would make him also 60, same age as you.

For your daughter, she would be 48, making her your younger sister.
To get more of an insight into what was happening at the time, I use the regressed current life Solar Returns for that year.

For you, the Sun is part of a stellium in the 12th house, so it is looking like a year of isolation or incarceration in a prison or hospital is a key theme.
The Moon at the Midheaven is in square to Saturn in the 12th so it looks like this would be disruptive for your business.

Your husband’s regressed solar return for that year looks favourable for his career with the Sun conjunct Mars and Mercury in the 10th house.
There could be problems for his wife or for a rival however with Saturn right on the 7th house cusp.

This fortunate period seems to short lived however because the solar return for the following year has his Sun exactly square to the Moon in the 10th house and part of a T Square with Saturn and Uranus in the 4th.
So this is looking like a retreat back to his homeland.

Your daughter’s (sister in that life) regressed solar return has similarities with your own as a 12th house stellium including a Sun/Pluto conjunction also looks like a period of imprisonment and a 10th house stellium involving the Moon, Saturn and Uranus also indicates disruption to her career.

A similar 10th house stellium for your ex again suggests a chaotic period for the career.
I have used dowsing to find that you lived this life in Tallinn as well.
Your husband was born in St Petersburg.
So from all of the above, I believe you ran a successful family business, a hotel/restaurant in Tallinn with your younger sister (your current life daughter) and another female business partner (your ex husband).
This all changed in 1940 with the Soviet Union invasion of Estonia and their demand that all local businesses become owned by the Republic.
Your refusal to go along with this edict brought you into conflict with the Russians and you were put in prison in April 1941.
Your husband was a Soviet army administrator brought in from St Petersburg, who had been tasked with sorting out these kinds of local issues, hence the conflict between you, your sister and him in the horary chart. His success was short lived however because the German invasion later that year saw the Soviets retreat and their system dismantled.

Your own solar return for the following year saw your release from prison and you were able to return to your work and even flourished for a while.

In April 1948, you died as your regressed Sun was square to your Moon.
Your regressed Moon was also opposite your Pluto.

Your regressed Solar return for that year confirms this with the Moon, Saturn and Pluto in the 8th house. Your Sun was in the 6th house in square to the Moon, so this was a health issue. With Venus and Mars conjunct in the 4th house you would have died at home, surrounded by your family.
This was your birthchart for that life.

With Sun and Moon in Capricorn you would have been a practical businesswoman.
As the Sun is forming a Grand Trine with Uranus and Neptune you would have been resourceful, able to adjust easily to the changing demands of life.
There are a few challenging aspects particularly the Moon in the 9th being square to Saturn in the 12th house and Venus in the 10th being square to Pluto in the 12th.
This does seem to indicate the period in prison as a result of standing up to a dictatorial regime from abroad.
This would have been reinforced by the transits.
In April 1941, Uranus and Jupiter were square to your Venus and conjunct your 12th house Pluto. This was quickly followed by Saturn in the same place.
You died in 1948 when transit Neptune was square to your 8th house Sun and transit Uranus was conjunct your Ascendant.
There are some interesting patterns in this past life and it is perhaps not surprising that there are parallels with the current one.
Your life changed a great deal when you met your husband this time round as it did last time.
It is also interesting that there is a connection with an invasion from Russia given your concern over whether there will be another one over the next year or two.
Maybe this also links into the idea that your synastry report brought up where you might have to leave Estonia or have a short period apart.
This has been a fascinating journey into your last life. I hope it resonates with you.”
M did indeed resonate with this past life review. In fact she wanted to take up the Past Life Family Package to find out if any members of her extended family were also involved in that life.
This Family Package includes a synastry report and Present Life Review for all of the family members, together with 2 Past Life Reviews.
I won’t reproduce the reports involved in this whole package because they are very lengthy and involved.
But for each of them we had to do another regression horary.

This chart places M as Saturn conjunct Neptune at the IC.
This placing reminds us that the focus is on family themes. Neptune being in Aries on the 4th house cups, signifies her father.
As it rules the 3rd it means her father in her last life would be her brother in this one.
Mercury is in Leo in the 7th, which would be describing her husband in that last life. Mercury’s rulership of the 6th and 9th, did not fit with any of M’s current family, but it’s placement at 7 Leo did, as her father has his natal Mercury within a few degrees of it.
So M’s brother had been her father in her past life and her father had been her husband.
With Mercury being on the 8th cusp and Neptune and Mercury aspecting Pluto they both died earlier in that life.
Further research with regressions showed that they died in 1931 (10 years before the above events) from TB.
There were problems with inheriting the family business and M had to start again from scratch with her sister and partner, which she did successfully.
For the other past life, we used another regression horary.

With Aries rising, M would be signified by Mars in Virgo in the 5th house, so she would be female and a child.
Mars is the apex planet of a T square so there would be some considerable pressure on her.
Mars is square to an 8th house Moon. This is looking very much like the death of M’s mother.
With this in mind it made sense to focus this review on a regression of her Sun to conjunct her 4th house Pluto.
The 2nd Past Life Review revealed M had been born in Hannover, Germany in 1761.
As the Moon in the horary is the 4th house ruler, and her mother in this life also has the Moon in Sagittarius, she was also her mother back then.
Checking her mother’s own regressions and returns it seems that she died soon after M was born.
Venus is also part of the T Square. Venus is opposite the Moon and so the mother’s husband, therefore M’s father.
Venus is the ruler of the 7th house, but there were no features that connected it to M’s current life husband.
Checking through the charts she had given me, her paternal grandfather had Venus at 4 Gemini, so it seemed likely that it was him.
The 7th house is the 4th from the 4th, (the father of the father) so M’s father back then was her grandfather in her current life.
A few years later, he got married again and M’s 18th century stepmother is her brother in her current life.
This time, despite the traumatic start to M’s life, she lived long and prospered again in a family business.
The most gobsmacking thing that I have found in doing these reviews is that the various techniques that I use come together in a way that totally confirms each one.
There is no logical reason why a Secondary Regression should dovetail with a Regressed Solar Return, but they always absolutely do.
A past life birthchart constructed for the date that a Solar Regression aspects the current life 4th house ruler will always give a birthchart that is powerfully descriptive of the main events of that life, right down to the specific transits to it.
And on top of all that, a Regression Horary cast for the moment the client requests a Past Life Review will bring all of this together, describing the main themes and even telling us who these people are in their current life.
We all know we have certain themes that we have to work on with our family members. For some people these themes are more powerful than for others.
After 50 years of studying this magnificent subject, I now realise that any understanding gained into our natal charts and those of our families will always be limited until we can explore our past life connections in this way.
If you wish to know more about yours why not request a Past And Present Life Family Package
