There are only two possible beliefs about the Universe, that its state is one of order or chaos, and no-one in their right mind would sign up to the latter one.
Whatever your perspective, it is clear looking at the natural world on Earth that there is a daily and yearly order. Whether and to what degree that can be extended to include mankind is open to question.
So we are all talking about cosmic order, the only argument can be around how much there actually is.
Astrologers would naturally vote for a very high degree, but my recent discoveries have led me to discern that the level of order is much tighter and more advanced than even the most committed of my colleagues can imagine.
Even with the support of our wonderful subject it is difficult for us to fully comprehend this because we understandably view everything through the lens of our own individuality and our own birthchart.
So I am asking readers to take a little step back at this point and try and conceive of their astrological chart in a different way.
While I was composing this I realised I would need to present a chart as an example, but which one?
A very clear thought came to me as I was driving to my beach for my early morning walk – I had to use the time of that moment.
As soon as I checked the chart I could see why.

The Sun rising in Scorpio could be encouraging us to take a deeper, more transcendent view of our subject, and its sextile to a Capricorn Moon would suggest that it is a view that works as well.
But the real power in this chart lies in the Water Grand Trine with Mercury and Mars in Scorpio trine an exalted Jupiter in Cancer at top of the chart and also trine Saturn and Neptune in Pisces.
There are also Kite formations including Uranus and Pluto.
So we have Mercury favourably aspected to all five of the outer planets including the three higher octave ones.
We also have two extremely close Yod formations, one involving the Moon and Ascendant with an apex Uranus and another with Uranus and Neptune to an apex Ascendant.
It is a remarkable chart, particularly for advanced thinking and understanding, but even so I want you to ignore the placements and focus on the space behind them.
Because it is this space that represents the whole, the Universe, the totality of everything that exists and even that doesn’t exist.
We believe that we are separate from this space because of our life’s identification with the actual placements in our chart, but our true self, our soul or our essence exists in and is inseparable from this space.
It is from this space that we emerged when we were born and back to this space that we retreat to when we die.
After some time/no time at all, because time does not exist there, something of us emerges again with another pattern of placements in the same way that it has done many, many times before.
So just for this moment try looking at your chart, but imagine the placements gradually disappearing into that space and see it as an empty chart, as it was before you were born.
Then see the moment of your birth with these placements emerging as tiny circles within this space.
Now let’s think about your progressions.
Over the course of a person’s lifetime, the planets from Jupiter to Pluto will barely move at all, so we ignore them.
If we live to the age of 90, the Sun and Venus will move on average a degree per year (one day equals one year by progression), so will only form one major aspect (conjunction, opposition or square) to each of our placements in our lifetime.
So both of them will give us one soul related trigger for each placement in our lifetime.
Imagine that at the point in your life when your progressed Sun forms an aspect to a placement a light comes on in its tiny circle.
If it helps you can see the colour associated with that planet shine as that light.
So if the above chart was someone born with the Sun at 3 degrees Scorpio, at the age of 20 the red light of Mars would be switched on because it is that many degrees from the Sun.
A year after that the progressed Sun forms a trine with Jupiter, so imagine another light being switched on (Jupiter is associated with a number of different colours, orange, brown, navy or indigo, just take your pick).
Just over a year later the black or grey light of Saturn comes on because of the progressed Sun’s trine with it at 26 Pisces.
A year after that the progressed Sun is conjunct Mercury so a grey/green/pale blue light (you choose which suits) comes on.
And so on.
By the time the progressed Sun reaches 1.28 Sagittarius (at about the age of 28) the lights of Neptune, Pluto and Uranus would have been added.
So it’s clear that between the ages of 20 and 28, the person who was born at the above moment would have had many significant soul related experiences and probably met people who have come into his or her life specifically for that purpose.
Maybe once the particular progressions are over, those lights start to fade again but they could be reignited by another progressed planet making the same (or other) aspects to them at another point in their life.
So for the above chart, the progressed Venus, starting at 16 Libra would reach a conjunction with the Ascendant and switch its light on in about 11 years time.
It would do the same to the Sun in a further 4 years.
It would switch Mars’ red light back on in 2055 and do the same for the others in the years up to 2062.
My discoveries in working with progressions has led me to see that they herald the appearance in our lives of an important member of our soul group.
Before we were born, as souls we made a pact with them to come into our life at that particular moment to help us with the experience that we have chosen for ourselves this time round.
So the person with the above chart would have very important soul related experience during their 20s and their 50s, probably triggered by meeting soul mates who could be described by Mars in Scorpio in the 1st house.
Recently I have discovered that the emergence of these soul mates can occur even without any knowledge of them on our part.
The moment of their birth in this life would be flagged up by our progressions, even if we did not meet them until many years later.
It’s equally possible that they were born many years before us and their birth moment would be indicated by our own regressions (reverse progressions).
This happened to me.
At the age of 12/13 my progressed Sun reached a conjunction with my Moon.
This would naturally be seen as the most powerful progression of my life, but nothing of any note happened to me. I didn’t meet anyone who would play an important role in my life.
But at that time on the other side of the world, my soulmate was born.
I would have no idea of her existence for another 50 years, but on meeting her on Twitter when my progressed Venus was conjunct my Ascendant, my life was turned upside down and I left the UK (at the age of 64) to marry her and live in Australia.
I have discovered that this idea that a progression/regression in a chart can point to the birth of a soulmate was not just something that happened for me either.
In A Right Royal Progress, I show how this occurred very strongly in the life of King Charles with the birth of his mother Elizabeth and his two wives Diana and Camilla.
I am convinced that no-one else has made this connection between progressions/regressions and soulmates, certainly not to the point that where we can see when they were playing roles in our previous lives.
Because of this, I feel a responsibility to write about this including using many demonstrations of it working in the lives of famous people.
One of the problems with looking at this soulmate birth moment thing is that if the two people are of similar age, there is not much opportunity for progressions to make their mark because their movement (apart from the Moon) is very slow (1 degree per year on average).
So to find examples, I googled celebrity soulmates that have a big age difference.
If you also google celebrities that believe in reincarnation, it’s very likely that one pretty man will come top of both lists.
Celebrity heart throb and friend of the Dalai Lama, actor and Buddhist Richard Gere has a particular affect on females of a certain age.
My better half tells me it’s because of something that he does with his hips whilst walking.
I’m thinking it’s something he does with his Venus.

Venus in Libra in exact conjunction with Neptune would have that effect. It would also attract some of the most beautiful women in the world as partners.
Mind you Charles Windsor, born 9 months before Gere, also has this conjunction and no-one in the right mind could say the same about him.
So perhaps it’s the way Richard walks with those hips leading then.
Mind you that could be down to Jupiter rising opposite Mars.
Gere’s Sun is in Virgo, closely conjunct Saturn in the 8th house, which probably explains his Buddhist beliefs.
This combination is exactly conjunct the Dalai Lama’s Moon (9.44 Virgo) so their friendship is an astrologically powerful one.
Gere has two planets in the 7th house of marriage, Mars and Pluto.
He has been married 3 times, to super model Cindy Crawford in the 1990s, actress and Bond girl Carey Lowell in the 2000s and to his current wife and true soulmate Alejandra Silva.
We don’t have a birthtime for Alejandra but a noon chart will do for our needs.

We could ask the question “So Richard, what attracted you to 34 years younger Alejandra?”
It would have to be that tight Venus/Mars conjunction in Pisces, in close trine to his 7th house Mars.
As they have their Mercury’s in close trine with each other, it would be a meeting of minds as well as bodies.
Alejandra has a very close Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in Sagittarius exactly square Richard’s Sun too.
So what happens if we progress Richard’s chart forward those 34 years to Alejandra’s birthdate?

In February 1983, Gere’s two 7th house planets Mars and Pluto came together by conjunction.
His progressed Mars was within 10 minutes of his natal Pluto.
His progressed Venus is exactly sextile (7 minutes of orb) his Jupiter.
Richard’s progressed Venus is also exactly trine Alejandra’s Venus/Mars conjunction.
So it’s very clear that Richard Gere’s progressions were indicating that his soulmate was coming into the world at that point even if they did not start their relationship for another 30 years.
One other significant point is that Gere’s progressed Sun reached the conjunction with his Venus in 1985-86.
What we do know is that Richard was a friend of Alejandra’s father and although we don’t know when they first met, it did happen when she was a small child, which could well have been during this progression.
What about Alejandra?
What if we regress her chart back those 34 years before her birth?

The result of this regression is absolutely stunning.
Alejandra’s natal Sun is 27.27 Aquarius. Her regressed Mars for Richard’s birthdate was 27.24 Aquarius.
Her natal Mars is 23.34 Pisces. Her regressed Sun and Moon are exactly sextile her Mars and closely sextile her Venus.
Her regressed Sun and Moon are also conjunct Richard’s Jupiter at 22.50 Capricorn.
The odds against all this happening by chance are thousands to one against.
But that’s the thing when we seriously look into progressions, we realise that the truly important things that happen in our lives, our meetings with our soulmates were planned before we even got here, right down to the moment they were born, even if those moments occurred 34 years or 10,000 miles away from our own.
There is far more order in the Universe than our poor little brains can imagine. Even if we use astrology our understanding is only creeping forward in first gear.
If we use secondary progressions, we can shift upwards, but only when we see their role in the comings and going of souls can we truly reach our higher gears.
