My guess is the intersection of a Venn diagram which covers the number of people who are fascinated by the astrology of past lives and equally by statistics is a relatively small space.

And it’s probably full of people with 12th house Capricorn stelliums.

They would all understand the notion of an accelerated time graph.

This is one that starts off slowly but the further you go along the x (time) axis, the steeper the curve on the y (acceleration) one.

Because Capricorns start off slowly but continue accelerating way into old age.

But there is also a phenomena known as instantaneous acceleration, where there are times in your life when quantum jumps are made.

My experience with astrology runs along both of these lines. Up to the age of 20, I had honestly never heard of it, I wasn’t even aware of my Sun sign.

I discovered serious astrology when visiting a friend at University, and I was immediately up and running. Within a couple of years I had given up everything in my life in order to study the subject as much as possible.

I found out that this hitting the ground running experience coincided with my progressed Sun making a conjunction with my Ascendant.

At around the same time, I discovered Buddhist meditation at a Tibetan monastery in Scotland.

These have been the two major themes of my life, but it is only in recent years that I have discovered how closely intertwined they are and realised that my true life path is to bring them together.

In the half a century since then, the curve for both subjects has continued to accelerate, but just this week there has been another leap into what was previously unknown.

This is again marked by a progressed conjunction to my Mars, in fact it happened on the very day that my Sun reached the exact degree and minute of the red planet.

And this quantum leap is about the extraordinary role of progressions and regressions and how they connect us with our past and future lives.

It is also important to point out that I have no placements in the Zodiac between my Ascendant (28 Capricorn) and my Mars (16 Pisces), so in the 50 years between these two events, I’ve had no progressed conjunctions.

I have explained in previous articles how during my early experience with astrology, I was more enamoured with progressions than transits.

This was not least due to the fact that of own experience of the progressed Sun on my Ascendant.

A few years later that all changed.

Margaret Thatcher’s victory in the 1979 UK election with transit Pluto conjunct her Sun pushed me to focus much more on transits.

I have always been driven by a strong desire to empirically prove astrology. Don’t ask why, it’s a Capricorn thing.

I realised that in terms of cataloging events in people’s lives, major transits like Thatcher’s are far more prescriptive than progressions, so in the years that followed I slowly dropped the latter for the former.

Between 2010 and 13, with the same transit as Thatcher (Pluto conjunct my Sun) my research into astrology led me to discover that proof which is now the Capricorn Astrology Research Project

At the end of my first visit to Samye Ling in the mid 1970s, I had an interview with the Abbot, Akong Rinpoche. 

I told him that I had greatly benefited from what I had learnt and experienced on the retreat but was not able to Take Refuge and formally become a Buddhist.

His response was “no problem, you will when the time is right”.

Twenty five years later, my son (aged 6 at the time) was attending the only Buddhist primary school in Europe – The Dharma School in Brighton.

A couple of the directors of the school were retiring and I was asked by a number of teachers if I would join the board.

To do that I had to have formally Taken Refuge which I was happy to do in order to make my contribution to this very loving, compassionate and caring institution. 

So I went back to Samye Ling to do the same course.

Rinpoche was still there and when I first saw him, he looked right through me as if he was seeing something behind me. He remained silent but it was as if he was saying to my soul “so now you’ve made up your mind then”.

This marked a turning point in my life but one thing that always bothered me was that I couldn’t see the astrology of this moment, there were no outstanding transits.

Fast forward another 25 years to this week, I was walking along my beach just at the point that I consider my portal, where many powerful astrological insights have come to me. I had a very strong sense that I should check the progressions of that moment.

I’m not sure what astonished me more, the incredibly powerful progression that I saw or the fact that it had never occurred to me to look at it before.

My progressed Venus was conjunct my Sun.

One interesting fact about it is that I have no placements between my natal Venus (21 Scorpio) and my Sun, so this was the first conjunction of my progressed Venus.

This moment in July 2001, was inextricably linked to another one in 2018 when (at the age of 63) my progressed Venus conjoined my Ascendant, and my true soul mate arrived in my life. I emigrated to Australia and married her.

Because I was entirely focused on transits and wasn’t even looking at my own progressions, both of these experiences were completely unexpected. I realise now that the reason I hadn’t seen them before was because I didn’t understand what progressions actually are, a window into our past lives.

My wife and soulmate has been a Buddhist from the age of 11 and has had many experiences of her own past lives.

Up to that point, I always believed in reincarnation but had no direct experience of it or insights into specific events in any past lives. Since meeting her, I have had these revelations as well.

And in the 7 years since then, I have come to see the profound and very specific connections between progressions and past lives.

This week with my progressed Sun exactly conjunct my Mars, I now see the very strong connection between my Venus progressions.

In our last life we were a young married couple living in a remote part of Eastern Tibet. My dream was to go to a monastery and study astrology. It was not to be because we were killed during the 1st Chinese invasion of in 1950.

I now realise that my Taking Refuge as a Tibetan Buddhist in this life in 2001 was the point at which I connected with that past life as my progressed Venus was conjunct my Sun.

This was what preceded us meeting again from opposite sides of the world once that progressed Venus had moved on to conjunct my Ascendant (17 years later).

I have now come to see that to understand progressions requires a different mindset.

To quote from my last article L Gets Her P’s

“When we are looking at our transits we are basically seeing how the Universe is interacting with our chart, how the patterns of a moment impact on those of the one we were born on.

This requires us to conceive of our placements and patterns as they were when we were born, so that we can assess what the Universe requires of us by way of adjustment, hence the name transits, short for transitions.

The method of Progressions requires us to look at a birthchart in a completely different way.

With progressions, we are not looking at actual planetary movements, this method is a symbolic one calculated by using the two movements of the Earth round on itself in a day and round the Sun in a year.

The word progression implies something that isn’t static, that moves on its own, so we look at our birth moment as a point in time, with a future but also a past.

Conceived of in this way, we see ourselves as something that is progressing, and hopefully learning and developing through many different lives.”

I wanted to write an article that explains all this but I always feel something is missing when an astrologer tries to make their points by describing their own experience.

As a reader you are being asked to go along with their own subjective interpretation of things that are not easily verified. It is much more powerful if the examples used are from the clear and obvious experience of famous people.

So I used what has now become a tried and trusted method of finding suitable subjects for articles – to allow my own mind to quieten and see what comes up.

This is the one that came to mind.

I have written about the astrology of King Charles many times but now I was able to see it in a new light.

Charles’ Sun is part of a 4th house stellium, so family themes are the main focus of his life.

His chart is dominated by the 10th house Moon.

The Moon rules the mother. Charles Moon is at 0.25 Taurus.

His Mum’s Sun is at 0.12 Taurus. The odds against that kind of synastry occurring by chance are over 800/1 against.

This is stunningly simple kindergarten astrology.

Charles Moon is in the 10th house of career.

Elizabeth dominates his life and stands in the way of his career goal, so much that he wouldn’t even get a job until he was 74 years old.

When Charles did finally get to be crowned, after her death, transit Pluto had stationed at 0.22 Aquarius, exactly square to his Moon and her Sun.

Elizabeth also has a planet at the top of her chart that dominates the rest. This is Saturn conjunct her Midheaven at the apex of a T square.

So her career is dominated by her sense of duty and responsibility.

Saturn is the principle of limitation. At 24 Scorpio, Elizabeth’s apex Saturn falls right on Charles’ Sun at 22 Scorpio.

You could see Elizabeth’s 70 year reign being driven by a strong desire to stop Charles from getting the job.

Clearly these two had some issues.

This is all documented and I have written about it many times. But what I have just discovered is the extent to which this relationship is karmically driven.

If we progress Elizabeth’s chart to when her son was born.

That T square becomes a Grand Cross.

On 14th November 1948 (when Charles was born) her progressed Sun was exactly (3 minutes orb) square her natal Neptune, and square her Jupiter ( 1/2 degree). It is opposite her Saturn.

Now let’s stop at this point and have a think about this.

Readers of astrology articles are used to ploughing through pages of “this means that and that means this”. Many writers will use long paragraphs packed full of such references, so it’s very easy to skip over them without really processing what we are reading.

But when we are talking about progressions we have to stop and see this moment in terms of a whole lifetime or indeed several lifetimes.

If we look again at Elizabeth’s chart we can see that between her Sun on the 3rd house cusp and her Pluto in the 6th there is nothing at all.

So she would experience no Solar Progressed conjunctions until she was in her 70s.

In fact she would not have a progression anywhere near as powerful as this one unless she’d lived to be 110 years old.

When she was crowned, 5 years later her progressed Venus was square her Pluto and trine her Moon but this is nowhere near comparable.

So why should by far the most powerful progression of her life coincide with the birth of her oldest son?

This is because progressions are not specifically related to events in this life, they are geared to connections being remade with important members of our soul group who have been with us for many lifetimes and have chosen to play a particular role this time round.

Not convinced? Then how about this?

When Charles was born, Elizabeth’s progressed Sun was at 22.05 Taurus, exactly (1/3 degree orb) opposite Charles own Sun, a chance occurrence of over 500/1 against.

No doubt other astrologers have pointed to this progressed connection between mother and son.

But I seriously doubt if anyone has looked at it the other way round.

If we take Charles’ chart back 22.5 years before he was born, to when his mother entered this world, his regressed Sun is exactly opposite his own Moon and therefore also opposite her Sun (with an orb of less than 1/2 degree).

So Charles has exactly the same progressed aspect for Elizabeth’s birth as she had for his one.

Which is bizarre.

But not only that, their progressed/regressed Moon’s do the same thing.

Elizabeth’s progressed Moon for Charles’ birth is at 13 Gemini, sextile her natal Moon at 12 Leo.

Charles regressed Moon for Elizabeth’s birth is at 1 Cancer, sextile his natal Moon at 0 Taurus.

Elizabeth’s progressed Mercury for Charles birth is at 0 Taurus, exactly (orb of 5 minutes) conjunct her Sun and Charles Moon.

Charles regressed Mercury for Elizabeth’s birth is at 22 Libra exactly trine Elizabeth’s Jupiter and sextile her Neptune.

The odds against all this happening by chance are off the scale.

Why? What is the point of all this?

The Universe is clearly trying to indicate some powerful connection that goes beyond this life because half of this relates to a moment more than two decades before Charles was born.

Since looking into the astrology of past lives I have come to find that a regressed solar return can tell us a lot about the themes of a particular year back then.

In fact I would go so far as to say that regressed solar returns are actually more useful than this life ones.

If we do one for Charles for the year of his mother’s birth, it is clearly significant.

If there is a place in the chart that signifies birth or the start of something it has to be the Ascendant.

Charles Solar return for 1926 has his Sun right on the Ascendant.

It is also part of Kite formation involving a conjunction with Saturn, trines with Uranus and Pluto and a sextile with Jupiter.

The Sun’s trine with Uranus in the 4th house is extremely close.

So clearly this is an important and auspicious moment in Charles’ own pre birth history, probably more so than any of his returns that have occurred in the century since then.

It is looking very much as if these two are soulmates, who for some reason have chosen to meet up in some kind of weird Freudian arrangement this time round.

What about a different time?

The obvious thing that their charts share is the Moon/Sun conjunction at 0 Taurus.

So what if we take Charles’ chart back to when his regressed Sun was at that point?

This takes us to August 1740.

Charles regressed Sun was conjunct his Moon (and his mother’s Sun).

His regressed Venus was exactly trine his current life Venus.

His regressed Mars was exactly trine his current Mars.

His regressed Mercury joined his Mars to form an exact Grand Trine with his Mars.

His regressed Moon was also exactly square his current Mars.

So clearly this points to an event that was extremely important in Charles past life history.

What about Elizabeth? Does this date figure for her as well?

If we regress her chart back to the same date in August 1740, her Sun is trine her current life Jupiter and sextile her Neptune.

Her regressed Moon is very close to this aspect as well, even closer to trine her current life Mars.

Her regressed Mercury is exactly opposite her current life Sun (and Charles current Moon).

Her regressed Mars is exactly (orb of 3 minutes) sextile her current 7th house Moon.

So the year 1740 is clearly an important year in the past lives of both of them.

But what happened then?

A look at Charles’ Solar Return for that year can tell us.

This is obviously very powerful.

There is an extremely tight stellium of the Sun, Mars, Mercury and Venus with the Sun and Mars having an orb of a mere 7 minutes.

This combination is opposite the Moon right on the cusp of the 8th house.

Venus, the chart ruler is also the ruler of the 8th house and in this pattern.

I have seen enough of these regressed solar returns to know that this marks the death of someone in a past life.

My understanding is that if someone is having an incarnation as a king or world leader, it’s likely that they would have had previous lives at a similar level.

Charles 111 of Great Britain is not going to have been Joe Bloggs of Scunthorpe last time round.

So I googled to see if there had been any deaths of monarchs around that date in 1740.

And found the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V1, whose dates were 1685 – 1740.

But one thing that truly astounded me was that before becoming Holy Roman Emperor, Charles unsuccessfully declared himself to be the King of Spain following the death of his father in 1700.

He tried to be Charles 111 of Spain.

I don’t have a birth time for Charles V1, but he would have a Scorpio Moon, conjunct his later self’s Sun.

Charles V1 had no male heirs but changed the rules with the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, enabling his daughter Maria Theresa to succeed him.

Maria Theresa became ruler of the Hapsburg monarchy and reigned for 40 years until her death. She was the only woman to have held that role.

A woman could not be elected Holy Roman Empress , but she arranged it so that she could co rule with her husband Francis.

But to all intents and purposes it was Maria Theresa that held the power of that role.

Maria Theresa had a Taurus stellium.

Her Sun at 22 Taurus is exactly opposite Charles 111’s Sun and forms a Grand Cross with Queen Elizabeth’s T square, being exactly (a few minutes from the square to her Jupiter and her Neptune).

If we progress Charles V1’s chart to Maria Theresa’s birth, we get powerful aspects.

One of the strongest patterns in his natal chart is the opposition between Venus at 4.13 Scorpio and Uranus at 9.33 Taurus.

Charles progressions for May 1717 were Jupiter conjunct his Venus and the Sun opposite his Uranus.

His progressed Moon is also exactly opposite his Pluto and his progressed Mercury is trine the same planet.

This is a particularly significant one because Maria Theresa’s Sun is at 22.26 Taurus.

It is asking a lot of the reader to remember all of the placings, so I will reproduce Elizabeth’s progressed chart for Charles’ birth.

Her progressed Sun was at 22.05 Taurus, exactly opposite Charles’ Sun at 22.25 Scorpio.

Charles V1’s progressed Moon for Maria Theresa’s birth was at 21.52 Capricorn, exactly trine Maria’s Sun at 22.26 Taurus.

If we take Maria Theresa’s chart back to the date of Charles V1’s birth, both the regressed Sun and Moon are exactly sextile her Moon at 21.54 Gemini.

Her regressed Mars is exactly opposite that Moon too.

Maria Theresa’s natal Moon is part of a T square with Mars (26.44 Sagittarius) and an apex Uranus (26.54 Virgo).

Her regressed Mercury forms a Grand Cross with this T Square and its opposition with that Uranus is a mere 2 minutes of orb.

Her regressed Jupiter is also exactly opposite her Mars.

Again it is hard to remember all the connections but Charles V1’s progressed Moon for Maria Theresa’s birth is at 21.52 Capricorn.

Maria Theresa’s regressed Sun and Moon for Charles’ birth are both at 21 Aries.

Referring back to the proposed Venn diagram at the beginning of this article, there is a part of me that would like to work out the odds against all of this happening by chance.

Mind you it would probably take me until my next progressed conjunction to do it, which would be around the middle of the 22nd century.

I think we can just say that the odds would be so mind bogglingly huge that even all the other inhabitants of the statistician sector of that diagram could not argue with it.

So it’s safe to say that Charles 111 of Great Britain was Charles V1, Holy Roman Emperor in a past life.

Elizabeth 11 was Maria Theresa, Charles V1’s daughter in that life who succeeded him as Empress.

Progressions in a person’s life are always going to pick out important moments that have strong links to their past lives.

These moments will often coincide with meeting someone from our soul group who arrives in our life this time round to help us with the experience that we have chosen to receive.

When we look at a chart like Charles we can clearly see the Moon as his mother. 

We can see other people in his life as well. 

Charles’ Mars could be linked to Diana as she has an Ascendant at 18 Sagittarius. 

When he first met her in 1977, his progressed Venus was conjunct his Sun. His progressed Sun was conjunct his Mars. 

Charles’ Ascendant is presumably Camilla because her Ascendant is 4.53 Leo within half a degree of his own.

When Charles married Camilla, his progressed Mars and Mercury were between 4 and 6 Aquarius, exactly opposite both Ascendants.

Charles’ Jupiter could be Harry, as he has Neptune in the same degree of Sagittarius. 

This is because Charles progressed Sun was at the degree in September 1984, when Harry was born.

Even though the movement of progressed planets is linear, when they form aspects to our natal ones they trigger a period of instantaneous acceleration in our lives. This is due to the quantum connection that they have with our past.

If we are alert to them we can see that we are being aided by other members of our soul group to tap into experiences and lessons learned from those past lives. 

The two major Venus progressions that occurred in my life did so while I was unaware of them. Fortunately this lack of foreknowledge didn’t prevent them from happening but I often think how differently I would have seen my life and felt about things if I had anticipated their arrival.
