Fate or free will ?
It is the fundamental question in our discipline.
We know that our destiny is marked out by the planetary patterns at our birth and the subsequent transits and progressions to them.
But do we have any choice at all bar our own responses to these placements ?
Certainly we know that by accepting what we are dealt by the planets and choosing to work within their spectrum of influence we will be more content and successful.
Equally if we try and fight them, we will lose and suffer considerably more as a result.
But is there more we can do ? Can a knowledge of astrology help us turn a negative transit into a positive experience ?
This is where electional astrology comes in. This is the one area where we have power to control things. It is an area of our subject that is underused but it really should be at the core of what we do and provide for our clients.
We have covered the importance of electing the major events in our lives. A wedding or coronation chart becomes the birthchart for the rest of your life. Or if you don’t get it elected you risk it identifying your divorce or dethronement.
But what about smaller events that are triggered by difficult transits ? Can we use astrology to turn this experience around to our benefit and set up something suspicious for ourselves.
My own experience is that we totally can and I work assiduously for this end. I have actually done so this week.
I have Venus at 22 Scorpio in the 10th house, I’ve known for sometime that Uranus opposition from the 4th house might mean we would have to move house.
But the first contact is usually where the shock occurs and this passed through June and July without incident.
But the retrograde this week brought an unexpected phone call from our landlord.
Since moving to Australia I have been renting a lovely place next door to my mother in law. This has been a very positive experience and has enabled us to keep an eye on the old girl too.
We rented it from two family friends who were moving to their own dream home. They are both Virgos and in my experience it’s best to buy or rent things from this sign because you know they will have looked after them right down to the finest detail..
In fact the only time when it’s not a good idea is when Saturn is transiting through the opposing sign, Pisces.
Under this transit they have separated and have to sell the new house and now one of them needs the one that we are living in. So on Wednesday evening we were given notice to quit.
The shock was diminished by the fact that I realised that it was Uranus.
My wife and I have Capricorn Ascendants in the same degree. We are both experiencing Pluto transiting over them, so this is simply another of the many changes that it has brought over the last two years.
I always find it funny that the planets can still find ways to shock astrologers who supposedly know what’s coming. But that is what happened to me because I had become complacent after getting through the first hit unscathed.
We have a number of pressing family engagements over the next couple of months with my step daughter’s wedding and my son coming over from England ( Uranus in the 4th opposite Venus ? ).
So I realised we had to move quickly and find a new place to live before the build up to those events.
Jupiter has been trine my Moon for a while and I realised I would need maximum help from it just as that transit was waning.
The rental market in Australia is appalling. Every house that becomes available has a long queue of prospective tenants all chasing it.
I checked online and saw a place that looked perfect for us. The open house inspection was the following day so we went along and fell in love with it.
We felt under a lot of pressure and were about to put in our application that evening but I decided to wait for the right chart to come up the following afternoon.
I knew about the beautiful Kite formation between the Sun, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto but reasoned that applying for a house rental while the Moon was waning would be a big mistake so needed to wait until after 2 pm.
Since the initial problem was caused by Uranus transiting my 4th opposite my Venus, I wanted to recreate that as much as possible by placing it in the same house.
An opposition always creates a challenge and generates a powerful energy.
What actually happens to us next is where we have a choice. What do we do with that energy ? It has to go somewhere. If we can channel it in a constructive direction it can be very useful. If not it will almost certainly make our lives worse.
Any planet that aspects an opposition can receive and be an outlet for this energy.
If another planet is square to both ends, it forms a T square. Here we have a compulsion, the energy generated must flow very strongly towards the apex planet and it is likely to be expressed harshly.
It is very difficult to harness this planet positively because of the insistent nature of the energy, but that makes it even more important to attempt to do so.
If another planet is trine one end and sextile the other of the opposition, we have much more choice.
This creates a direction that can really take the sting out of the challenging pattern and if we head that way, the likelihood is we will have a much more positive experience, one that means we would be grateful for the initial challenge.
But the key word here is ” if “.
Because the Easy Opposition pattern is not compelling at all. It will create an opportunity but it doesn’t force us to take it. In fact it’s very easy to miss it altogether because we are being distracted by the disruption caused by the opposition.
This was totally the case for me this week. I realised that the New Moon presented us with an opportunity to turn this whole 4th house chaos around but we had to act very quickly.
And Capricorns are not known for their speedy responses.
So a problem generated by an opposition can become a great gift if you look for Easy outlets to it.
With the chart for the house application, I wanted to use the New Moon but quickly before its trine to Uranus faded.
But I also wanted to use the chart as a horary.
In a horary for a house purchase or rental, the 1st house ruler is the querent as usual and the 7th ruler would signify the seller or the landlord.
So I had to wait until Aquarius was rising to get the applying trine between the Sun ( 7th ruler ) and Uranus.
This would also place Jupiter in the 4th house.
This chart also had Venus as 4th ruler in Leo in the 7th house.
Venus is applying to an aspect with Jupiter and then to Uranus.
Venus in Leo very neatly described the real estate agent who showed us round the property, so we needed to make sure the planet signifying her was on board.
There was to be another open house on the following morning so we were expecting plenty of competition, but we realised that we had done everything in our power to enhance our application.
The Universe obviously agreed because two days after we applied we were told we had been successful. Our new house is a significant upgrade on the last one.
The tenancy begins today, 8 days after we put in the application. Venus signifier of the house applies to an aspect with Uranus ( chart ruler ) in the 4th house in 8 degrees time.
But all of this would have been missed if we didn’t have access to astrology because I would not have known the imperative to act straight away in order to make the use of the Kite and the New Moon, finding a new house and setting up a house inspection within 24 hours of receiving notice to quit the old one.
So a difficult transit was turned into a positive result purely by using elections.
Amongst the many congratulations we have received are lots of references to it being written in the stars. This is undoubtedly true, but also not much use unless you have the ability to read it and the clarity to act on it.
Astrologers can be many things – oracles, counsellors, investment advisers, forensic investigators, even healers.
Electional astrology can turn them into magicians, channeling the power of the cosmos for their clients’ benefit.
