Natal astrology has always been around but until the beginning of the last century it wasn’t the main branch of the subject.
This is because in times gone by the man or woman in the street or in the fields would probably be unaware of their birth time, and many of them would not even know what day they were born.
They still consulted astrologers though, in times gone by it was more popular than it is today.
But clients had relatively little interest in understanding their own psychology, they wanted to know what was going to happen to them.
They had very specific questions like when will the ship with my goods arrive, or will I succumb to the latest plague that’s doing the rounds.
Rather than dusting off their natal charts and checking their transits, the astrologer would draw a chart for the moment they asked the question and look to find the answer there.
This method is called Horary ( of the hours ).
Horary took a backseat for much of the 20th century but it has had something of a renaissance in recent years because the focus on psychological astrology has tended to lose some of the very specific applications that horary astrology used to have.
I find horary an extremely helpful adjunct to a natal consultation but also it works very strongly on its own with questions about anything in the client’s life.
It is however, very different to natal astrology, it has its own rules and processes and cannot be approached in the same way that one would a natal chart.
I did my first horary training course in the early 1980s and have used the method extensively for 40 years.
