Anyone involved with astrology has to consider the question of fate versus free will.

Like a lot of these type of questions, it’s not simply a case of either/or. It’s perhaps best to see this as a spectrum and individual astrologers look to find their own place on it.

Some aspects of the subject seem to suggest that we have little freedom at all. Some ways of viewing horary astrology might appear to confirm that view.

Most specialists in natal astrology are likely to say we have a lot of freedom, not least because once we accept our birthchart patterns, we are able to channel the symbolic energies in a positive way rather than be unconsciously controlled by them.

However you could make a case for people in the public eye having less freedom than the rest of us, because their nativity connects with so many others.

An extension of this theme could be seen in Mundane astrology, the study of nations, where fate seems to play a bigger role.

On the other hand Electional Astrology offers us an opportunity to free ourselves from our birth patterns by setting out new nativities of our choosing for important events and fresh starts in our lives.

Even if you take the view that our natal charts give us very little room for manoeuvre, electing the time and date of our marriage can have a massive impact on the rest of our life.

If we are unaware of astrology, the Universe will naturally pick a time and date that reflects the patterns of our natal charts and our synastry with the bride or groom so our marital experience will already be proscribed.

But what if we choose to elect our nuptials astrologically? Are we really changing our fate or has the Universe already taken into account the fact that we would consult an astrologer and this is taken into consideration.

A quantum view of the Universe would suggest that any attempt to observe a phenomenon will inevitably affect and change it.

This view would deny fate as a fixed thing, suggesting that infinite possibilities exist at any moment. If we step into this quantum arena with an astrology election we will inevitably alter what would have happened.

There are many sliding doors moments when our astrology creates a possibility for us and we can choose to open them or not.

About five or six years ago I was contacted by a client who was in an abusive and controlling marriage. She had determined to get away from the husband although it was complicated as there were young children involved.

We were able to plot a timescale for her getting free of this situation which coincided with transit Uranus square to her Sun (she has the exact natal square).

But her main question was when would she actually meet her soulmate, a person who would bring love and positivity into her life.

I explained that with the South Node in the 7th house she was destined to have to learn some difficult lessons through her marriage.

Her husband was a Pisces Sun so the sign placement of the Node was prophetic.

But she wanted to know if this pattern was set for life or if she could ever free herself from it.

It’s important to note that her Venus is in Virgo in the first house conjunct her North Node.

Over the years I have come to see secondary progressions particularly those of the Sun and Venus as corresponding to periods in our life when we encounter important people from our soul group who come into our life at that time in order to help us with the themes that we have to experience.

I explained to my client that with her Sun and Venus some 44 degrees apart, this would mean that she would not meet up with her soulmate until later than most people.

I told her that this would happen in September 2024.

She did have another reading a few years back at about the time she extricated herself from her marriage, but at the beginning of September she contacted me to say that no such person had appeared in her life.

I checked the timing of the progression but also observed that there was to be a lunar eclipse within a couple of weeks falling right on her Venus/Nodal axis. So it seemed that this was the time for her soulmate to arrive.

I asked her if she was making herself available for this new experience by going out and meeting people but she said no, she had just expected him to find her.

I told her that she had to sign up for dating apps and was very insistent that she did that by the end of the week because time was running out.

She was surprised to hear how strongly I put this advice but she followed it.

Within a few hours of joining an app she found someone who she liked the look of and he reciprocated. They instantly became an item and are now very happy exploring their new relationship. She is convinced he is her soulmate.

I don’t have a birthtime for him but their synastry is strong and his Mercury is closely conjunct her Venus so he would have been affected by the eclipse as well.

Also he has a Venus/Uranus conjunction and his progressed Venus will form a sextile with this natal pairing over the next 18 months so clearly it was time for him to meet his soulmate as well.

The irony was he had been on the app for sometime and had been unhappy with his experience and was about to cancel his subscription. Her contact was the last thing he spotted before leaving.

So what would have happened if I hadn’t been so insistent that she sign up? Would she have missed this moment and the soulmate connection that went with it?

If something is this fated, would the Universe have found another way to bring these two people together over the next couple of weeks?

Or was it all part of the plan? Did the powers that be take into account that I would check the coming eclipse and tell her that she had to act at once?

We can never know for sure.

Granted it is early days but already her life has changed beyond recognition. This lady has taken a leap of faith based on astrological advice and she has been massively rewarded for it.

Whether it was fate, free will or a bit of both, this combination of progressions and elections has been a quantum jump into a whole new world.
