Always Check Under The Bonnet

In simple terms, the Sun in a person’s chart describes their core identity and the main themes in their life.

Their Ascendant will show how they present themselves to others.

A person’s Ascendant is likely to be what you see when you first meet them, once you get to know them better, you will probably spot the Sun shining through.

This can be complicated if the signs are very different. We might be one thing but are required by our rising sign to appear as something else altogether.

Other people might even claim that we tried to deceive them and hide our true nature or intentions. This may or may not appear to be the case, but because we have those different placements we have to come over in that way.

For many men, their choice of automobile is reflected by their Ascendant. They believe it says a lot about who they are, although it likely says a lot more about how they wish to be seen.

I have the Sun and Ascendant (and Moon) in Capricorn. What you see is what you get.

My attitude to cars that I have owned has always been a pragmatic one. They get me from A to B, apart from the very first one I owned (a 1958 Morris Minor affectionately named Grobbler for the noise it made), I’ve never had a sentimental attachment to them.

They say that buying a new car is not cost effective, as soon as you leave the showroom it depreciates massively in value.

I would buy mine at the other end of the spectrum, determined to be their last owner.

I worked out that the most cost effective way was to buy a solid old model like a Mercedes, Volvo or Saab in a private sale as cheaply as possible, don’t spend any money on it and run it into the ground until something goes wrong, then send it off for scrap.

I would use a combination of astrology and I Ching to decide which ones to buy rather than spend more cash getting a mechanic to check it over.

I would pay about £2000 on it reckoning that if it lasted more than a year, I would be ahead. Every single one that I bought did that comfortably, some of them going on for 3-4 years without mishap.

All of this is textbook Sun/Ascendant Capricorn.

When I moved to Australia, my wife owned a Toyota Corolla that had been expertly picked by her father, and had been in the family for the best part of 20 years.

The only problem is I am a lot taller than her and couldn’t drive it without my head crammed against the roof, so we passed it on to her daughter and looked for a new one.

My wife being a Sun/Moon Aries has a very different view of the family car and was horrified by my old attitude and method of purchase (apart from the use of astrology obviously).

So we headed for the local Toyota dealership to invest in one that was reliable, looked good and would last for ages.

We looked at a few but one was really calling out my name – quite literally as it’s registration number contained my birth year, my initial and the last three letters of my surname.

It cost over 5 times more than I’d ever spent on a car, but had very low mileage and the I Ching was extremely keen.

The guy that was showing us cars was low key, a quietly spoken man who we learnt had just started in the job. To process the sale he had to involve his boss, a much larger, louder type of character, who seemed to want to show him how to “reel in the buyer” despite the fact that we had already agreed to buy it.

This type of dickhead really gets my goat and I showed my impatience not least because I had elected the moment for purchase and didn’t want to waste it having to listen to some arrogant, patronising nonsense.

If you are looking for something to be reliable and last, you can’t do better than the Sun and particularly the Moon in Taurus.

The Moon because it’s the planet that moves quickest and is most prone to changes and the reason that it’s exalted in Taurus is because this sign gives it focus, stability and security.

A new Moon is always better than a waning one so it would have to be on this particular day.

Office hours on that day would mean we could have anything from Cancer to Libra rising, but I went for Virgo.

I always say it’s best to buy a second hand car from a Virgo because you know they would have looked after it and the likelihood is they would be able to navigate their way under the bonnet and service it well.

The other reason for that choice is it’s the only one that would have meant the chart ruler was in dignity.

You would also want soft aspects with any of the planets that might normally cause trouble, usually Saturn, Uranus and Pluto.

For a car you would want a nicely aspected Mercury and Mars, so Mercury in Gemini at the Midheaven in close trine with Saturn in the 6th would be perfect for something that would mostly be involved in short journeys and would have a good service history and not require repairs.

Mars in Cancer in exact sextile with Uranus would be great for a safe family car.

The Sun and particularly Moon in trine to Pluto is also very favourable.

There is a T square but the Ascendant opposite Jupiter focused on an apex Venus is an auspicious one.

With Venus and the Sun and Moon in the 9th, it would suggest that it would be a great purchase for travel round Australia.

I wasn’t aware at the time but Jupiter on the 7th even pointed to the salesman trying to show off in front of his new colleague.

We have had it 3 years and it has been perfect, no repairs required at all. I have no doubt that we will continue to drive it for another 10 years at least.

I love doing astrology elections, scanning the ephemeris for potentially auspicious moments and comparing and tweaking them to get exactly what you are looking for.

It should go without saying that by far the most important thing is planetary aspects. Some “astrologers” particularly traditional and Vedic ones will focus strongly on dignities while downgrading aspects.

I recently heard of someone who was offered an “election” to time a marriage proposal on the strength of Venus being in Libra.

This despite the fact that Venus was square to Pluto and two days later the most difficult lunar eclipse involving Saturn and Neptune.

They say a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, but that adage is even more the case when dealing with elections.

You can get a poor interpretation of your natal chart but that doesn’t actually change anything. Your chart will still operate as yours regardless.

But a poor astrology election for something as significant as getting married or buying a house or car is likely to cause you harm, even if your own transits didn’t require you to have a challenging experience.

It’s not just about doing something on a favourable day, the moment of your purchase becomes the birthchart of your relationship and experience with that product.

If you’re buying a car it makes sense to have Mercury and Mars strong by planetary dignity, but their aspects would be far more important.

One of my FB followers, A, bought a used van 4 years ago. It has been in her own words an “Absolute nightmare money pit.”

Mercury is in dignity in Virgo, as is Mars in Aries.

Mercury’s sign placing might suggest the van had good service history, but Mars in Aries is not necessarily as auspicious as you might think.

This combo would probably work for a highly tuned racing car, but not for a used van family runabout.

Mercury in Virgo at the top of the chart certainly gave the impression of it being a vehicle that had been well looked after but its opposition with Neptune showed that this would be an illusion.

But it’s that Mars that is the biggest problem. At the apex of a T square on the cusp of the 6th house, this van is in very poor health.

The T square is built on Venus in Cancer in the 8th opposite a tough Saturn/Pluto conjunction in the 2nd house, which is the nightmare money pit A mentions.

Jupiter’s addition simply makes it even more expensive and the South Node also in that house shows that A and her family are going to be taught a severe financial lesson.

Mars in Aries might give the impression of revving up at the traffic lights and speeding away on orange, but that close square to Saturn means it would break down almost immediately.

The square to Pluto would blow a gasket.

Stuck on the side of the road with steam pouring out of the van’s bonnet, A is going to look anything but dignified.

Obviously this van purchase was unelected, but since having this experience, and having to scrap the thing, she consulted me on the best time to buy another one.

I had three responses in total in my request for disastrous car purchases.

Two of them were bought within a few weeks of each other and had the same T square.

S bought one. “Within five weeks the radiator and cooling system had gone and cost another £850 to fix. I paid just over market rate to a private seller, with the idealised notion that I’d  rather a human benefit from the money than a ‘dodgy’ dealership (talk about owning my prejudice). Mechanic advised was a long standing issue, seller claimed innocence. No right of recourse because it was an individual rather than trade. The car had so many problems and the day before I had a sale that was going through, the battery died costing another £300”.

Mars had by now turned retrograde and was a mere half a degree away from its place three weeks earlier.

Saturn and Pluto had barely moved. Venus had moved on but the Moon, although just into Leo, had taken it’s place in the T square.

Mercury had moved on into Libra, but the Sun was now performing the delusional role in Virgo opposite Neptune.

The apex Mars is on the cusp of the 2nd house, again showing that the whole experience will be costly.

The 6th house is again involved, so although the Moon and Venus in Leo there would give the impression of the car being in rude health, the Moon’s opposition with a 12th house Saturn and Pluto meant there were serious hidden problems.

Venus’ square with a 2nd house Uranus adds to the cost of this venture.

The 7th house in charts like this would refer to the seller.

The Sun in Virgo there would certainly claim innocence. The Sun’s opposition to Neptune would prove them to be a liar.

The Saturn/Pluto conjunction was the astrology that brought us all Covid. Some people deny it and believe it was all a conspiracy dreamt up by Bill Gates in order to sell some vaccines.

Over 7 million people died worldwide as a result of the disease, the worst figure for over a century. It would be interesting to see how many of them had it square to their Mars in late Aries in the 6th house.

The moral of this story? If you’re buying a car don’t believe the 7th house seller without checking its aspects. Get the ephemeris out and look under the bonnet.

Better still, if you don’t want to catch the worst cold of the century, don’t just go on it’s Ascendant or you’ll end up on the curb side looking like an idiot.
