Is It Time For Some Chironic Irrigation ?

Capricorns are always late to any party. When all the other signs are getting excited about the latest new thing, we will sit on the fence and say “it’s too soon to tell”.

The reason for this reluctance is that Capricorn is a sign that primarily is interested in whether something actually works and produces a tangible, useful effect in the long term.

We won’t go along with something just because it’s fashionable, it has to be properly road tested first.

This may well be a very boring and laborious way of looking at any subject, but at least once a Capricorn is on board, you know that the thing has a shelf life.

So how long does it take for a triple Capricorn to catch up with everyone else then ?

About 46 years.

I guess Chiron has always been an outlier, its placing in the chart for the moment of its discovery backs this up.

It is placed in Taurus in the 4th house, the only feature in the chart below the horizon. But it also is important here for two reasons.

One it provides the handle for the bucket shape of the chart, two it forms part of a T square opposite the Sun and focusing onto an apex Mars.

I have always known that Chiron has a significant impact on my own chart, falling as it does exactly on my Ascendant. I have had a career in complimentary health which I actually established when transit Chiron was opposite its natal place and opened a training school for practitioners during my Chiron Return.

However, unlike many astrologers I would not jump to form a whole theory just because something occurs in my own chart. I would need a lot of corroboration elsewhere to become convinced of an effect.

I always hope that other astrologers might come up with some serious research into things but apart from some vague stuff about wounded healers and a few anecdotes there doesn’t seem to be much on Chiron.

So as usual, I have to do it myself.

Also as usual, it’s very difficult to do empirical research like this because of the subjective nature of the Chiron effect. But I believe that since it played such a large part in my own chart, if it does have a measurable effect, it should reasonably be expected to do the same in the charts of other health professionals.

The astrodatabank contains a collection of 754 charts of people engaged in health professions. This is certainly large enough to be a decent test of Chiron’s effects.

One great thing with this resource is it allows you to test how often a placement occurs somewhere in a sample by sign or house.

Unfortunately it doesn’t do so by aspect and since that is my most favoured area of astrology, again I have to do all the work myself.

So far I have tabulated the aspects in 291 of these charts, but have decided to cut and run at this point because otherwise it might be another 46 years before I get this article out there.

What is clear is that the Chiron / Ascendant conjunction that I have is not shared by other health practitioners.

There are only 8 of them with this aspect and if we use a 10 degree orb, we would be expecting twice as many for a sample of that size.

Overall there does not seem to be any particular aspects between Chiron and the Sun, Moon or Ascendant coming up, they all seem to fall well within the expected range.

The only other outlier is the Sun’s opposition which also scores 8.

The only one that scores significantly above expected is the Sun’s square to Chiron at 37 (expected would be 32) but this, particularly when considered with the low score for the opposition has no statistical significance.

The same can be said for house placings.

Of 753 charts, the top scorer is the 1st house with 74 followed by the 12th with 70.

This might seem significant but the p test gives a result for this spread of 0.65 and only scores less than 0.01 can be deemed to show a definite effect.

But it is perhaps an indicator of something.

My research has clearly proven that people with a 1st / 12th house emphasis are strongly driven to assert their own themes in life and those with a 6th / 7th focus are more caught up with the themes of other people, not least their partners. For more on this see The Capricorn Astrology Research Project

So we would expect Chiron to be placed in the 1st / 12th houses in the charts of people who have pursued health as a career. It certainly fits with my own chart.

This finding is on the face of it massively reinforced by the sign distribution.

Out of 754, Chiron top scores in Aries 120 times while in Virgo it appears only 25 times.

This is an astonishing distribution but before we rush off to proclaim that health practitioners proudly assert their Chiron, we need to question whether it spends more time in this sign than the others due to orbital reasons.

Chiron’s orbit is highly eccentric. It sits mostly between the Saturn and Uranus, but is very irregular and consequently spends a lot more time in some signs than others.

And over the years that cover the charts in the astrodatabank, the sign that it has spent by far the longest in is Aries.

In fact a control group consisting mainly of builders and people who you wouldn’t expect to have a strong Chiron when adjusted for a sample of 754, produced 159 occurrences in Aries, so the health professionals are scoring relatively poorly.

At this point perhaps the people who were getting all excited about Chiron in Aries might be desperately trying to construct a theory around people on building sites with this placement getting wounded by lots of bricks falling on them.

But the real gem here is to look at which sign scores lowest amongst the builders group.

That is Scorpio with a score of only 15 (less than 10% of the Aries figure).

The health professionals have 43 Chiron in Scorpios. This is 2.87 times the figure in the control group.

The next highest differential score would be Gemini with 1.82.

Aries is in fact the 2nd lowest scoring with 0.75 of the expected figure, with Pisces being the lowest at 0.65.

So in all this the one discovery that has statistical significance is Chiron in Scorpio.

A breakdown of the specific types of health work involved in this sample is not available, but if this group were all colonic irrigation therapists, I wouldn’t be at all surprised.
