For Karen
The greatest gift you can receive in this life is an understanding of how it all works in the present moment.
Once you have that, all things are possible, because each moment has its own uniqueness.
Since our own unique moment of birth, we have been conditioned by everyone around us to believe in linear time.
This belief might appear to make our lives easier but it is an illusion. Quantum physicists would say that time as we believe it and experience it, does not exist.
We believe our own thoughts are associative and linear, but they actually aren’t. We believe they are, because we have never really taken the time to stop and truly observe them in a detached fashion.
If we do we can see that thoughts are like waves that rise and fall through our consciousness at a particular moment. These thoughts have an essential connection with that moment and if we can find a way of receiving an understanding of that connection, it can give us a profound insight into other moments too, whether they are from what we call the past or even the future.
But if time does not exist how are we, whose understanding of ourselves has to be limited by time constraints, to proceed at all in such an incomprehensible Universe?
Well the Universe understands our dilemma, because it has given us a tool to help us cross this rainbow bridge.
We have a quantum method of measurement at our own fingertips.
It is called Horary Astrology.
With horary, we can ask a question in one moment that is about another moment in our lives, whether it is the future or the past.
A horary chart cast for that moment can give us the answer that appears to us to belong to a future that has not yet been experienced.
A horary chart can do this because it taps into the connection that one moment has with all others.
When we cast a horary, we stop looking at time in a horizontal, linear way and access the vertical dimension, where thoughts, intuitions and impressions simply rain down on us from above.
In this mode we can truly understand the quality of that moment and therefore our question, because it belongs in that moment.
If we allow ourselves to follow horary procedure, this understanding can reach the place where all possible moments co exist.
From there, we can see into what we call our future or our past and find an answer to our question.
I first studied horary astrology 40 years ago, and have looked at thousands of charts since then, but I still feel as if I am just on the edge of discovering what this subject truly means for mankind.
I believe that this feeling is an essential one that is required by the subject itself, because if we think we know all there is about horary, we are not using it as a tool to understand the moment.
We have to drop any preconceptions and be truly guided by the chart in front of us.
In fact, if a horary chart does not astonish you, that is because you are not really seeing it.
Every time I cast one, I am gobsmacked by it. In fact if I don’t feel this way, I actually start to doubt whether the chart is valid.
But even so, some horaries are more astonishing than others.
I received a question a couple of days ago, that generated a chart that was off the scale and unlike anything I had witnessed before.
One of my US clients, keen to get away from all the nonsense over there, has been having an extended holiday in Europe, based in Vienna.
She has a Cancer Moon, so I elected Jupiter’s transits for the flights each way.
As Jupiter was retrograding back towards her Moon, she was just coming to the last couple of days of her stay and understandably asked the question, should I rent my US house out and emigrate to Vienna?
Here is the chart.

Afficionados of this ancient art will immediately see what I mean.
We have two of the three classical Considerations Before Judgement and are a mere couple of degrees away from the third.
The Ascendant is in the last 3 degrees of the sign, the Moon is Void of Course (in the final minutes of Gemini) and Saturn is almost in the 7th house.
Ordinarily the advice to any astrologer is not to look at a chart with even one of these, particularly as a 7th house Saturn will suggest their judgement will be wonky.
But I am not easily put off. Especially as this chart so perfectly describes the situation my client was in.
A late Ascendant will normally mean that an experience is coming to an end and the question is asked too late to have any real impact on something that has already been decided.
There is also a suggestion that despite asking the question, the querent deep down really knows that is the answer.
A Void Moon again suggests an experience coming to an end and it normally means that nothing will come of the question, mainly because there is no opportunity or energy left in it for it to occur.
The chart ruler, Mercury, which would signify the client, is in the very first minute of Capricorn having just left the sign of travel, (Sagittarius) and is at the beginning of the 4th house of home.
Mercury is also the 9th house ruler, so what better way to describe someone who is at the end of her travels abroad and about to return home?
The Moon has just separated from a square aspect with Neptune, suggesting dreams and illusions and my client had admitted that she had spent the last couple of nights dreaming of what a life in Vienna would be like.
The very tight Grand Cross between the Ascendant, Moon, Mercury, Saturn and Neptune would probably show what would happen to her if she did decide to emigrate.
I told her “This is an astonishingly strong chart with a very clear message, which is just simply NO.
This chart also suggests that deep down, you know this is the right answer, you have to return home and stay where you are strong.
To leave your house would be a massive mistake, and the whole thing would be unviable financially.
It’s a nice dream, but the reality makes it unwise and untenable. It’s also not going to happen anyway.”
Her response? “I am so grateful as I was really trying to live a dream that made no sense but I felt it so strongly. Thanks for saving me. Now I know how to move forward thanks to you.”
Whenever you approach a horary chart you have to adopt the same view that Midge Ure sang about Vienna.
“This means nothing to me”
By “me” I mean our ordinary linear mind that tries desperately to find time based causes and effects.
No matter. Put that “me” to one side and let the horary soak into your very skin. If you can truly do this, the chart will reveal all its quantum secrets.
And then all you can say is
Oh Vienna.
