When you understand astrology, you’ll know that you’ve chosen your parents. This has to be the case.
We all have a Sun and Moon, with a combination of sign and house positions and aspects to the other planets.
The way the lights combine with one another and the other planets will likely describe the major themes that person has to experience through their life.
To set the scene for this they will feel the Sun and Moon working through their parents when they are young.
Behavioural psychologists will say those early experiences and relationships with and between the parents will condition the personality and impact strongly on their life experience.
Astrology would say that the early experiences and parental relationships are not causal, they are simply an expression of the chosen natal chart.
So we come into this life to parents who will help to provide us with the experience that we have chosen to have this time round.
All of life is a continuum. The patterns that we experience now are related to those we had in a previous life. The connections with our parents and other people in our lives will also be carried over.
Consequently it can be very helpful in understanding these themes to look back to see what roles these people played before.
The basic principle of astrology is that the chart of the moment of your birth will describe the patterns of your future life.
But it can also be used in a way which will describe those of past ones.
My technique of Secondary Regressions shows that a natal chart can be taken back to a pivotal moment in a previous life, one which can help shed great insight into our current relationships.
Over the last few months I have done about 50 regressions and have come to realise that a horary cast for the moment the client requests one can offer a great deal of information about the past life on its own.
This is particularly the case when it comes to tracing the role that current family members played in a previous lifetime.
In a previous article – The U Boat, I introduced this idea.
“A few weeks ago I did a Past Life Review for U which placed her whole family on a boat sailing from Ireland to Scotland in 1703 (to escape from some tough new laws introduced to persecute Catholics). They had almost reached their destination but the boat capsized and they all drowned.
U wanted a fresh look at this life in order to see whether any of the members of her current family were with her in that life.”
So I cast a horary for this request.
This is my commentary on the horary in my report for U.
“The thing that struck me about this chart straight away was the fact that the Kite formation looks very much like a sailing boat.
The Moon at the top of the chart is the sail and Venus, Saturn and Jupiter represent the boat.
The fact that Saturn is right on the IC is a very good symbol for the boat being sunk and all aboard losing their lives.
It’s particularly interesting how close the aspects are as Venus, Saturn and Jupiter are all at 6 degrees of their signs.
Sagittarius is rising so that makes you Jupiter, which we would expect as you were on the boat.
It looks like you were accompanied by Venus, Saturn and the Moon. There is also a possibility that Neptune was on it as well.
So maybe if we check out which houses those planets rule, that might give us some means of assessing who these people are in your current life.
Venus rules the 6th and 11th so could be a friend.
Saturn rules the 2nd but also co-rules the 3rd so could be a sibling.
The Moon rules the 8th.
Neptune rules the 4th so could be a parent.”
U enquired about both her parents, her brother, her two husbands, two sons and two daughters and a son in law.
Regressing all of them back, I found that both parents, her brother, both sons and her second husband were all with her in 1703. Her daughters weren’t.
Checking all of these out, it’s interesting how clearly the horary was identifying them.
On reflection I believe the Virgo Moon is referring to both parents. This is born out by the fact that U’s mother had Sun in Virgo and father had the Moon there.
Her brother is indicated by the 3rd house co-ruler Saturn.
Venus is harder to place but I believe this could be referring to her 2nd husband. If we say the 7th ruler was her first one, its reasonable to suggest that as 11th ruler and 5th from the 7th she could be signifying a love interest who appeared in her life after her first husband died.
Her 5th house ruler is Mars, which is also part of this pattern with its wide trine to the Moon. Maybe the fact that it’s Mars means her sons would be there rather than her daughters.
So it would be fair to say that the horary was indicating all of the current family that were on U’s boat over 300 years ago.”
U was fascinated by these findings. She wanted to know if there was another past life connection with her two daughters. So we looked at another life.
And I cast another horary for this request.
This is my commentary for U.
“Aquarius is rising, with Pluto exactly on the Ascendant, which is a fitting placement for a question about a past life.
You would be signified by Jupiter in Taurus in the 4th house.
This means that you were again female and for the purpose of this question were at home.
A daughter would be signified by Venus as 5th house ruler.
Venus is in Aquarius so this would suggest that she was male in this previous life.
Venus is in the 1st house.
If we turn the chart to make the 5th cusp the Ascendant we see that Venus is in its 9th house.
Venus is closely conjunct Mars.
All this together sounds like you were staying at home, while your daughter was a man in this previous life, travelling abroad, probably to fight a war.
Venus has separated from Pluto and is applying to Mars.
Pluto is the 11th house ruler which is the 7th from the 5th.
Therefore your daughter in this life has left his wife behind to go and fight in a foreign war.
As Pluto is exactly on the Ascendant, I believe this is enough to suggest that you were his wife.
So your daughter in this life was your husband in the previous one.
Your other daughter can’t be signified by the 5th house ruler because that is already taken by K.
So she should be the 7th house ruler, because that is the 3rd from the 5th, so K’s sister.
This would make her the Sun in the horary.
The Sun is in Pisces so she would be female.
The Sun is also ruler of the 8th house of the chart, which is the 4th from the 5th.
So from this I’m going to deduce that she was K’s mother in this life.”
From the Regressions for all three charts, I discovered that U was born in 1794 in Venice and married young. Her husband was coopted into Napoleon’s army and he was one of the soldiers who starved to death during the retreat from Moscow in the winter of 1812/13.
U was intrigued by these findings, saying “I feel close to both of them, but K is the one I am deeply connected to. She has always been mum’s girl and she still is very emotional when she leaves.
The older one is further away in a sense and independent. But she has always been and is very protective of K. So it is no surprise that she was once K’s mother.”
In another Past Life Regression, M wanted to know about any previous connections she’d had with her father, who interestingly had some very similar natal patterns to her.
This is the horary for this request.
And my commentary to M.
“Here the Moon is in Cancer within 1 degree of your natal Mars.
The fact that it is in the 8th house confirms that this is a question about reincarnation.
Sagittarius is rising, so you are signified by Jupiter. It’s in Taurus so you were female in this other life.
It’s in the 6th house, so there is probably a health issue.
You asked specifically about your Dad who would be signified by Uranus as the 4th house ruler.
Uranus is in Taurus so he would have been female in this life.
Uranus is also in the 6th house, so his/her health might be an issue.
However I believe the house position of a significator in a horary about past lives will tell you what relationship they had to you in that life.
The 6th is the 3rd from the 4th, so your Dad could have been your aunt in this previous life.
The Moon being in Cancer in the 8th house, suggests that someone has died, but it is closely applying by sextile to Jupiter (you) so it looks like a substantial amount of money is coming your way by inheritance.
The Moon is also trine the 2nd house ruler, Saturn which backs this up.
Jupiter is applying to conjunct Uranus, so it doesn’t look as if it’s your Dad/Aunt that dies.
The Aunt would be signified in this chart by Venus as 6th house ruler. Venus is applying to a conjunction with Saturn.
The Moon separates from a trine with Saturn and applies to a sextile with Jupiter, so it seems that it is the death of the person signified by Saturn which has caused the money to come to you.
From the perspective of the 6th house, Saturn rules the 9th, 10th and 11th houses. It is also placed in the 11th (4th is 11th from 6th).
So from this I believe that your aunt in this life received an inheritance from a friend of hers and a substantial amount was passed on to you.
The Sun is in Pisces conjunct Neptune in the 5th house, so there is something here to do with children.
Neptune as 5th ruler would signify a child of yours in this life, in Pisces it would be a daughter. Neptune is combust the Sun which is the ruler of her 6th house (10th is 6th from 5th).
So it looks like your daughter has a sensitive constitution and health problems.
However the Sun is now separating from the conjunction with Neptune, so maybe these problems are beginning to disperse.”
From the Secondary Regressions I discovered that M was born in Edinburgh in 1808, had a daughter when she was 31, who had serious health issues, but she was unable to afford the hospital treatment she required.
Her aunt’s friend died leaving a substantial sum in her will, much of which was passed down to M and enabled her to pay for the hospital costs for her daughter who was able to regain good health.
So we can see how much information a horary can provide about a previous life, and if we turn the chart so that the house cusp associated with each player in that life becomes the Ascendant, we can see how their roles play out.

Transits, secondary progressions, solar returns and horary are four totally different methods that are calculated in entirely unrelated ways.
Nevertheless, my fifty years of combining them in astrological practice has shown me how effectively they dovetail and these completely different methods are so often portraying shades of the same themes.
This happens with a frequency that defies the laws of chance. But it’s truly astonishing how strongly they work together when applied to past lives.
I have often felt that astrology will lead the practitioner when things are not so easy to spot.
This certainly works when clients don’t know their birthtime, it’s amazing how much information can be gleaned from a noon chart, as if the cosmos is compensating for this unknown factor.
Horary, in particular, will do this.
It is after all divination, so much depends on the practitioner, but if they are experienced in what to look for and open to being guided, their horary chart will lead them clearly to the essential points.
