Astrologers are always juggling with the question of fate and free will.
Rather than think of it as an either/or question, it’s perhaps more useful to think of it as some kind of spectrum and we all sit somewhere along it.
Some, particularly traditional Vedic practitioners, find themselves closer to the fate end of things, some with a new age persuasion would argue that we have a lot of freedom.
For me, the fate/free will question depends what we are talking about.
I believe that astrology is not fate, but we are bound to receive an experience of a certain symbolic range. We can’t escape from that range but if we accept that fact we have a fair amount of freedom within it.
However there are certain things that happen in our lives that have to occur, that were prearranged maybe as a result of some kind of contract established before we got here.
This is particularly the case with the meeting of soul mates.
But one question that intrigues me is whether it’s possible to miss this meeting, to walk past that person on the other side of the road and to not be present or able to respond to the most important turning point of our lives.
Can there be a sliding doors moment but we remain stuck on the platform, having been too timid to step aboard the soulmate train?
Or is it possible that the train is in the station, but we have missed the connection because we are too absorbed by other things.
How does it work anyway and what if a knowledge of astrology is involved? Is it still possible to miss out?
I was first in contact with a client called T about 6 years ago.
With Sun and Moon in Leo and a left sided chart emphasis, it’s clear she is a strong, independent woman.
There is just one problem, the South Node in Pisces in the 7th house.
She was married to an extremely controlling man, a Piscean. She needed to get away from him but it was complicated by the fact that she had three young children.
She was able to do this when Uranus formed a square to her Sun (replicating the exact natal aspect between the two).
But her question back then was, will I ever find the right person for me?
I suggested that this would happen in 2024 when her progressed Sun was conjunct Venus.
At the beginning of September 2024, she contacted me again to say I had predicted that month but there was no sign of him.
I checked and noticed that the lunar eclipse of the 18th September would fall within a degree of her Venus, so this was certainly the time for such a meeting.
I asked whether she was making herself available through dating websites etc, but she said she wasn’t, she had just been expecting this man to turn up at her door.
I told her in no uncertain terms to get onto a dating site as soon as possible because the window for meeting was fast running out. She did that and within 24 hours had made a connection with someone. They have been together now for 5 months and are a perfect match.
T told me recently that he allows her to be herself, something that no-one else has done.
One fascinating feature of this was that the man concerned had become disheartened with the dating site and already cancelled his subscription, just making one final check before he left and saw T’s profile.
So astrology clearly brought these two people together.
Could it have happened without an intervention from the stars? Who can say, maybe they would have collided in some other way. We shall never know.
As often happens when I write an article, the Universe has a way of leading me where it wants.
I googled celebrities who met their soulmate later in life and the first person on the list was Keanu Reeves and I was struck by the similarities with T.
There is another upper left side emphasis, with a Virgo Ascendant a mere 5 degrees away.
There is also a rogue placement in Pisces in the 7th house, Chiron which is opposite Keanu’s Virgo stellium.
Transits and secondary progressions are different methods that should be considered separately.
Over the course of a lifetime there will be very many transits. Some like those of the Moon will last for 2-3 hours, others like Pluto for 2-3 years.
Progressions because of the way they are calculated (one day for a year) are few and far between.
Jupiter to Pluto will move so slowly that even over a lifetime they will hardly shift from their natal position, so they can be discounted.
The Moon will make 3 progressed returns in an average lifetime and its aspects will last for a couple of months at a time.
The Sun and Venus would cover only a quarter of the chart during someone’s life, so they would therefore only make one major aspect to each of their natal placements.
There is also a sense that transits are the Universe’s way of interacting with our birthchart. They are “out there” impacting on us. Current planetary movements aspect our nativity to create events and experiences that we have to deal with, to adjust and respond to. They are transitions that we have to go through.
Progressions are something that we bring into this life with us. They are an unfolding of something that is already inside us.
How can this be?
Secondary Progressions contain within them the assumption that this life has to develop in a certain way, that we have to experience some aspect of our natal placements at those times in our life, irrespective of what is going on “out there”.
Once we start to conceive them not as events as such but as members of our soul group who have contracted to make an appearance at a certain time in our life to help us with the experiences we need to have, it all makes sense.
We can therefore begin to see this unfolding quality, that each progressed planet has a pathway.
If we look at Keanu Reeves’ Venus at 23.54 Cancer we can see where it has to go in this life.
Scorpio is 106 degrees away, so it’s unlikely that he will live beyond Venus in Libra.
We can see that until Venus reaches Virgo, it isn’t doing anything much. From then on, (just as it should be in Virgo) it’s very busy.
This starts with the opposition with Saturn at 1 Pisces in his 6th house. Which happened in 1998-99.
“In 1998, Reeves met director David Lynch’s assistant Jennifer Syme at a party thrown for his band Dogstar, and they started dating. On December 24, 1999, Syme gave birth eight months into her pregnancy to the couple’s child, who was stillborn. The couple broke up several weeks afterward, but later reconciled. On April 2, 2001, Syme was killed when her vehicle collided with three parked cars on Cahuenga Boulevard in Los Angeles. Syme had been under the influence and also not belted in.”
Clearly with such a powerful Pluto (conjunct his Sun and Ascendant), Keanu Reeves would be strongly impacted by its transit.
There would only be one such in his lifetime.
In 1998 – 99, Pluto was square to Reeves’ Sun
In 2001 it was square to his Ascendant.
So these Pluto transits were clearly the experience that Keanu Reeves had to go through.
His progressed Venus opposite Saturn would bring into his life the soul group contact he needed to help deliver this experience.
We don’t have a timed chart for Jennifer Syme but we can see some serious Saturn related problems.
Like Keanu she had a Sun/Saturn opposition, although Jennifer’s is much closer.
Her Sun/Saturn is also square to Reeves’ Virgo stellium, a fact which is crucial for their shared Pluto transits.
Like Keanu, Jennifer had a Mars/Venus conjunction in Water signs.
Transit Uranus was square to her Mars/Venus and transit Saturn was opposite it when she lost her baby.
And on the day Jennifer Syme died, transit Pluto was at 15 Sagittarius, exactly conjunct her Sun.
This is the kind of thing that happens. I have over a thousand articles on my website and most of them will contain this kind of gobsmacking Pluto transit theme.
Yet the vast majority of people on Earth ignore astrology altogether or believe that it’s just for delusional airheads.
Ignorance is the word for it.
Life and the planets move on. Understandably, given his experience, Keanu Reeves is notoriously private about his love life.
In 2006, there were rumours that he was in a relationship with actress Claire Forlani, although the couple claimed they were just good friends.
This would make sense as his progressed Venus would have been conjunct his Sun then.
However Keanu Reeves Sun is closely conjunct Mercury, Uranus and Pluto. So there would inevitably have been complications and changes following quite quickly.
In 2019, Reeves revealed he had been dating the love of his life, artist Alexandra Grant. It seems that this relationship had been running for a while.
What we do know is that they first met in 2011 for a collaboration on his book, Ode To Happiness.
Keanu Reeves progressed Venus was conjunct his Ascendant and sextile his Moon in 2011.
From this point onwards, Keanu’s progressed Venus made much easier aspects. There was a sextile with his Mars in 2017, which probably occurred when he and Alexandra became an item.
This was followed by the sextile with his Venus and trine with Jupiter when he declared his love during 2018 -20.
Since then, nothing. Keanu has no more Venus progressions until 2037 when it squares his Moon, by which time he will be in his mid 70s.
So we can safely say that Keanu and Alexandra are soulmates who are in it for the long term.
Why did Keanu Reeves and T not find their people until their mid 40s?
We could say it is because they have the same distance between their Sun and Venus (44-46 degrees) and that many other progressions had to happen first.
We could also see that with the South Node and Chiron in their 7th houses, their experience of relationships had to go through trouble and healing first.
Maybe when it comes to it we all take the right road at our own T junction, even if it seems like the wrong one at the time.
