Logic is “traditionally defined as the study of the laws of thought or correct reasoning and is usually understood in terms of inferences or arguments.”
But is there really such a thing as “laws of thought” or is this something that has been imposed upon us?
The truth is that this logic is the study of the past with the inference that it can help us understand the present and the future.
It is the key principle behind what our society calls intelligence but how we acquire it is not really education. It is training.
It is driven by concern is about future moments and our ability to survive them.
We are being trained to get a job in some distant future and that training is focused on what has worked to that end in the past.
We are conditioned to think in this way and to believe that this will teach us about ourselves and our world.
While this maybe a valid and useful method of training for most of us, we make a mistake if we believe that it is teaching us about the essential nature of reality.
Despite all of the protestations about child centred education we are mainly being taught that what other people have told us about what has worked in the past matters far more than our own perceptions in the present.
We are not being taught to observe ourselves and our world in this moment.
Even science will now admit that logic is no longer an affective tool to truly understand the nature of reality. This is because the discoveries of the last century in the field of quantum physics have rendered this method obsolete.
You’ll be lucky to find a scientist who will follow this to its natural conclusion though. They have worshipped for so long at the feet of logic that they are out of their depth when it comes to these matters and there is a lot of fear around their insistence on continuing to do so.
I had what was considered to be a “good education”. I attended a respected grammar school and went to University to study Politics and Philosophy.
Not once was I encouraged to observe the workings of my own mind.
My own mind was considered to be either wrong or entirely irrelevant. What was considered important was that it was filled up with as much information as possible and I was taught to try and link up this information in ways that could be used to argue for or against something.
By the time we emerge from the conditioning of formal education we are convinced that this is how the mind (and therefore the world out there) works.
Thought becomes applying what we believe we know about the past to any problem we encounter in order to try and solve it for the future. We apply this method not only to the practical questions, but also to psychological ones.
We question things within this framework of logic, training and conditioning, but we never question the framework itself.
We might spend three years at college or university honing these skills, but we would never consider spending that amount of time observing the workings of our own mind to see what is truly there.
If we did do that, it is likely that we would realise that the nature of thought has very little to do with the so called laws of logic.
Thoughts arise and fall in our mind rather like waves.
We don’t spot this process occurring because we aren’t being attentive to it. What happens to us is a thought arises and that thought takes our attention with it.
Because we have been trained to think in associative ways, our mind follows these tracks and our thoughts wander from one thing to another. We believe there is a logical link because we are immersed in it.
But there is no link. If we watch the rising and falling of our thoughts for long enough we will see that there is space in between them where we are not caught in them.
It is in these brief quiet moments where we can be said to be seeing things closer to how they actually are, without the interference of our own conditioning.
It is also during these moments of quiet reflection that the Universe has an opportunity to speak directly to us and we occasionally experience thinking that is of a quite different order or level than our normal one.
These thoughts we can call intuition, they are sudden spontaneous insights that are not dependent on the past or on any previous thought we might have had.
Our normal thinking mode is horizontal, and time based.
If we can observe the comings and goings of normal thought and allow our minds to quieten we can occasionally experience moments where inspiration comes instantly and vertically.
But how do we who have been so powerfully conditioned to think in terms of the limited horizontal mind, open ourselves up to such an apparently random process? Particularly if this method seems to be intent on undermining everything we have been taught.
We use astrology to help us through it. And not just any old astrology. We use Horary.
In a previous article Horary – The Art Of A Vertical Science
“We are all conditioned to think, measure and experience things occurring in time.
But what if, as the both the mystics and quantum physicists tell us, time as we believe it, does not actually exist? That everything occurs in an eternal now.
If this is true, we have no means of measure and our day to day lives lose the meaning we have carefully and painstakingly built for them.
We have no structures to fall back on, no compass to guide us through this quantum Universe.
It’s a scary thought right? But it needn’t be.
We just have to change to a different type of measurement.
Astrology gives us this possibility. We can look at our own charts and see how the moment of our birth is interacting with the here and now, and try and make the adjustments to our thinking that are required by our transits.
But our natal chart still ties us to that moment of our birth. A horary chart does not. It is an instant capture of the Universal qualities of a moment in time, a quantum jump of a combination of planets many millions of miles away, straight into the mind of the questioner.”
What is required to read a horary chart?
Most astrologers that use Horary come from the traditional schools. And if you read what many of them have to say you will find an obsession with other astrologers of the past and the rules that they themselves used.
This approach seems to me to be missing the quantum perspective of horary.
My approach to astrology is pragmatic, not theoretical. If something works in practice, I am happy to use it. If it doesn’t, I won’t, it doesn’t matter who said what in the past.
In another article In Search of The Horary Grail
“I was contemplating writing an article about the subject and the question “How Does Horary Work, What Kind Of Thinking Is Required To Understand It?” occurred to me very strongly, so I cast a chart for that moment.

Whatever way you look at it, this is an extraordinary chart. There is a very powerful conjunction on the Descendant including Saturn, the North Node, Venus and Mercury in Pisces with Neptune in the 1st minute of Aries.
So we have to immediately ask why?
The Ascendant is the emerging individual, it is the point where the Sun makes an appearance, in a horary it is all about the immediate concerns and interests of the person asking the question.
The Descendant is the other, the point where the Sun sets, where the individual disappears.
As the person asking the question, I am represented by the Virgo Ascendant, trying to understand the subject of horary from an analytical perspective.
The South Node is closely conjunct the Ascendant indicating that trying to perceive the subject in this way would be a major challenge and lessons would have to be learnt.
The placement of the ruler, Mercury is telling me what is required of me in order to comprehend horary.
It’s position in the very last degree of Pisces on the Descendant in exact conjunction with Neptune says that I have to first let go of my sense of my separate self to receive the wisdom of the subject.
I have to quieten my Virgo mind and allow the impressions that come through the chart to wash over me.
Because Horary Astrology is simultaneously an insight into the mind of God and of quantum physics.”
How does it work? How is it that a question jumps into the mind of someone at a particular moment that will enable horary to answer it?
We can only assume that somewhere deep in the unconscious mind of the questioner, they already know the answer and that there is also some connection between this part of their mind and the collective unconscious which will mean they ask their question precisely at a moment where a horary can answer it.
The only way to understand this quantum process of horary is by seeing examples of it in action.
I have seen thousands of them over the years, so many that cannot be explained by any method of so called logic.
I could pick any one of them as an example, but have chosen one from a recent consultation with a new client.
This lady is in her mid 50s. Four years previously she had divorced from someone she had been with for 30 years. She was keen to find a new partner but her experiences in dating since her divorce had been disappointing as none of the men she had encountered were interested in committing to a long term relationship.
She wanted to know if this situation would change in the future.
Here is the horary for the moment she sent me her question.

The first thing that I do with any horary is to check the significators with the questioner’s natal chart.
If there is a clear link between them, then I know that the chart is valid and it is appropriate to judge it.
The questioner has Gemini rising so there is a 1 in 12 link there, but the most important thing is the connection between the horary chart ruler and the natal chart.
In this horary, that is Mercury at 15.14 Pisces in the 9th house.
This lady has her natal Mars at 16 Pisces in the 9th house.
Given that I would also have taken a link with any of her other personal planets, I would estimate the odds of this sign and house distribution occurring by chance to be over 300/1 against.
Those odds are extraordinary, but this is the kind of thing that regularly occurs through this quantum science.
Another important point is that the chart ruler should be able to describe the situation of the questioner at the time.
Mercury is retrograde so has just moved back out of the 10th house of career into the 9th house of education.
This lady actually works as a teacher in the University system, but is currently about to go back to college herself to retrain in a different area.
Exactly as a retrograde Mercury entering the 9th house would be saying she was.
Having ticked all these boxes, we can confidently head towards looking at her question.
It is a very simple one. She is asking if there is a possibility of a long term relationship coming up for her.
This is clearly the area of the 7th house.
The ruler of the 7th house is Jupiter.
Jupiter is at 15.05 Cancer in the 2nd house.
Mercury is in very close trine with Jupiter. As Mercury is retrograde it is applying to that trine aspect.
This trine is extremely close and there are no other planets that could possibly get in the way.
This is very simply saying yes, there is such a person coming to you and you will meet them very soon.
If we look at the orb of 9 minutes between the Mercury and Jupiter and apply my usual timing method of 1 degree per month, we would be expecting her to meet this person within a week of asking the question.
Our consultation was booked for 13 days after she asked the question so I felt that by the time I spoke to her she would have already met this person.
When we spoke, she confirmed that she had met a new man a week previously and had seen him twice since then. She said ” I feel hopeful on this connection and that never happens for me”.
Her description of him as a successful man holding a position of considerable responsibility, fits very well with Jupiter in Cancer in the 2nd house.
This is a quantum jump for her, but it is very clearly depicted in the horary even down to the time of their meeting.
Her past dating experience had led her to believe that men were not interested in commitment and this man clearly is looking for that.
Logic or reason based on past experience could never have provided her with this answer.
But if you want to get to the truth of things, you have to put reason to one side for a horary moment.
