Pattern recognition is the essential primary condition for life. Without it we would not last long.
Fortunately we are hard wired to do it from birth. “Every perceived object is stored as a “template” into long-term memory. Incoming information is compared to these templates to find an exact match.”
It’s very likely that the first “object” independently perceived in this way is our own mother. The visual connection is instantly made and referenced to the experience of our previous nine months in her womb.
In this way we immediately recognise the vital importance of pattern recognition for our own safety and security.
The recognition and understanding of family patterns is the most fundamental and important theme in our lives. Everything we experience is is a direct result of it.
Everyone recognises patterns, the more intelligent are able to see and benefit from the more sophisticated ones.
If we can recognise the cosmic astrological patterns that underpin life, we have all that is required to live in an enlightened, considered way.
Like most students of our noble art, I have looked into family patterns a great deal. There are so many fascinating ones to write about, but by choosing one example or another, I would obviously be affecting the result.
So I thought I would just offer it up to my Facebook group to see if anyone would be interested in sharing their own, and I would just take the first ones that were offered.
The very first person to share their family details was N. A quick look at her own chart, shows the extraordinary importance of the family pattern experience.

The sign that is most associated with the family is Cancer.
N has the Sun in that sign, but her actual experience of family is as un-Cancerian as you could get.
N’s Sun is exactly opposite Uranus (a mere 4 minutes of arc) and Neptune, the two most unconventional planets of all.
Someone’s natal placements, particularly the Sun and Moon will tell us what kind of experience they are looking for. Aspects of other planets to them will show what kind of experience they will get.
The opposition between the Sun/Mercury and Uranus/Neptune focuses by T square onto an apex Aries Moon in the 9th house.
The 9th house of travel abroad will be a critical theme in N’s family experience.
This is reinforced by the fact that Pluto is in her 4th house of home and family, in close trine to her Sun.
N’s family are from Colombia, they emigrated to the US, 7 years before she was born.

N’s father has an extraordinary chart, with an 8 planet stellium mostly in Leo.
Note the Sun is exactly conjunct Mars and Pluto.
His Moon is also closely conjunct Uranus.
These patterns obviously play into N’s own combinations with the same planets.
N’s own birth was a major turning point in her father’s life, as transit Pluto made it’s only aspect to his Sun, a square in 1992.
This was in fact the end of an extremely volatile Pluto transit period which began in 1983/84 when it was square to his Moon.
“My brother was a surprise pregnancy for my parents, leading to them getting married in Feb 1984.” So very transit Pluto square to Moon/Uranus.
“After my father’s business partner was murdered, and with the financial help of his older brother (my dad’s only sibling, who married someone of means), he crossed the border to the US on 21 Oct 1986. My mother and brother flew together to join my dad and uncle in the US in 1987.”
Transit Uranus was trine his Sun in late 1986 – 87.
But for N’s mother it was her Pluto moment.

With a Scorpio Sun and Moon, Pluto is always going to be important, and its placing in the 9th would indicate a significant move abroad, which came in 1987, when it was conjunct her Moon.
It’s interesting that while N’s father had such a Leo dominated chart, the two females in his life so far have their Suns in Water signs and in the 12th house.
It must also be significant that as N has such a powerful Sun opposition with Uranus and Neptune, her mother has those two planets in square to each other also involving her Venus.
Even more so that her mother’s Uranus is conjunct N’s Sun. So clearly N’s mother would represent a significant challenge to her own need for security and family stability.
It’s interesting to look at Venus in both mother and father’s charts. Hers is closely conjunct Neptune and square to Uranus, his is conjunct Jupiter and square to Saturn.
Father’s Saturn is conjunct mother’s Sun and Moon, so at some point this synastry would become a problem.
“My mother left, divorce finalized in 2004.”
Transit Neptune was square to mother’s Sun and Moon (and conjunct father’s Saturn) in 2003-04.
Transit Saturn was conjunct N’s Sun and square her Moon in 2004.

N’s brother, like his Dad is a Leo. Also like his Dad, he has the Sun in Leo square to Saturn.
And again like his Dad, his Saturn is conjunct his mother’s Sun and Moon.
Like all of them, N’s brother has significant Uranus aspects, although an exact trine with his Sun would be an easier one to negotiate than N’s opposition, father’s close Moon conjunction and mother’s tight Venus square.
The turning point of his life came early at the age of 3, when transit Pluto was square to his Sun and he moved to the US.
Interestingly this came on the back of transit Uranus in his 4th in square to his Moon when his father left for the US the previous year.
His mother leaving home and his parents’ divorce would have would have hit him hard as transit Neptune was opposite his Sun in 2002 and Pluto square his Moon in 2003 – 04.

There is no birthtime for N’s paternal grandmother, but the Uranian thing is there again with it as the apex of a T square involving the Sun and Pluto.
With Sun and Moon in Aquarius, she was an unconventional woman, perhaps shown by the fact that “As she got older she confessed to forging her papers to 25 Jan 1935, in order to get married on 17 May 1950 (legally she needed to be 15)”
Her marriage probably occurred when transit Pluto was opposite her Moon, meaning she would have been born in the morning.
N’s father and his mother had challenging synastry with his Sun/Mars/Pluto opposite her Moon
His Moon/Uranus was also in her T square opposite her Sun, conjunct her Pluto and square her Uranus.
“My father described being severely abused by his mother his entire life. My grandmother suffered a lot in her youth too (one reason why she was eager to get married).”
Saturn was square to N’s father’s Leo stellium in 2013-14.
“My father took care of us until the bank foreclosed our home in 2013….After we lost our home, my father moved back to Colombia, living with friends until he reconnected with a love from the past.

Maybe as a reaction to his oppositions with his strong double Aquarian mother, the other females in N’s father’s life have all been Water signs.
The synastry with N’s Stepmother is strong, with her Sun/Mercury/Venus conjunct his Moon/Uranus.
Her Venus is particularly important here as it’s the apex of a T square involving her Moon and Neptune.
She also has powerful Uranus aspects as it is in the 4th in tight square to a rising Mars.
Her Uranus is also conjunct N’s father’s Sun/Mars/Pluto.
They had a son together, N’s stepbrother.

The Uranian family theme is there again, with it (and Neptune) opposite N’s stepbrother’s Cancer Moon.
This Moon is closely conjunct his father’s Moon, conjunct his mother’s Sun and N’s Sun.

Fascinatingly, the Uranian theme occurs again in the chart of N’s stepbrother’s partner. She is another Sun Leo with a tight opposition to Uranus.
“My brother is also mostly estranged from us (similar to my grandmother not talking to her family, and my mother not talking to hers). My stepbrother’s partner has also recently adopted the silent treatment towards my stepmother and father.”
Some interesting Cancer/Leo/Uranian standoffs there.
“Due to safety reasons, my father and stepmother had to leave everything behind in Colombia last year, and they live with my husband and I now.”
Which totally makes sense given that transit Pluto was and still is opposite N’s father’s Moon/Uranus.
N was the only person in this family born in the US, but her Sun in Cancer exact opposition to Uranus sets the pattern for everyone.
Some families may seem to be chaotic and constantly changing, but we know that has to be a factor with a Uranian pattern.
Why are so many family members born with such powerfully similar patterns?
Who knows, but it would be interesting to regress N’s chart back 180 years to when her Sun was conjunct her Uranus. Maybe there would be some clues there.
