Growing up in the UK in the 1960s and 70s, I really felt in the centre of rock and roll culture.
No doubt the USA would argue that proposition, and put forward the Doors, the Allman Brothers, CSNY, the Grateful Dead, the Eagles, but when compared to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and so many others…..
Would any of them fit the title of this article?
The Stones’ Keith Richards would be a perfect candidate – apart from the death bit obviously.
John Lennon had the death part and the others in a low key way perhaps – see Imagine There’s Just Heaven.
We could make a good case for the Doors’ lead singer Jim Morrison –
The Sun in Sagittarius opposite Mars in Gemini would have a strong sexual magnetism, and he’d certainly be happy to let everyone know about it.
A Taurus Moon opposite Venus in Scorpio forming a T Square with Pluto on the Descendant adds a strong dose of passion and intensity in relationships.
No wonder the track most associated with Morrison is Come On Baby Light My Fire
A key factor was also his 8th house Neptune as the apex planet of a wide T square involving Mercury and Saturn.
Transit Pluto was exactly conjunct this Neptune when he died of a heroin over dose in 1974.
One place I would never have thought to look is my new home, Australia.
To my shame, I was unaware of the many great Aussie rock bands, including Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, The Angels and Ice House.
I hadn’t even made the connection that AC/DC, Little River Band, Nick Cave and INXS were from this great southern land.
And INXS front man Michael Hutchence died young with a powerful cocktail of drugs in his system.
Neptune again makes an appearance as it’s conjunct Hutchence Scorpio Moon and square to his Sun.
Transit Neptune was conjunct his Ascendant when he died.
If quizzed about the Australian contribution to rock music back then I’d have probably got as far as Kylie Minogue, but she doesn’t really cover any of the above criteria.
There are a few female lead singers in rock bands that could tick most of those boxes.
Debbie Harry, Dolores of The Cranberries, Crissie Hynde of the Pretenders, Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane or Janis Joplin of Big Brother and the Holding Company.
But I have recently been introduced to one who has all of them covered, Chrissy Amphlett, the lead singer of Aussie band The Divinyls.
Wikipedia lists Amphlett as “notable for her brash, overtly sexual persona and subversive humour in lyrics, performances and media interviews”.
The Divinyls best known track was I Touch Myself reaching No 1 in Australia and No 4 in the USA.
Chrissy had a volatile love life, fuelled by drugs and alcohol. She also suffered with multiple sclerosis which meant that she was unable to have radiation treatment or chemotherapy consequently dying from breast cancer after a long illness.
Chrissy Amphlett ticked all of the sex, drugs, rock and roll and death categories big time. Of course she did.
There is no birthtime available, but the Sun/Mars/Neptune conjunction action in Scorpio says it all.
In square to a Leo Moon meant that all these themes had to be thrust forward centre stage.
Her career played out while transit Pluto was in Scorpio. The Divinyls were formed in 1980 but the relationship that defined it between Amphlett and guitarist Mark McEntee started in 1982, when Pluto was conjunct her Sun.
McEntee had a Mars/Jupiter conjunction in Leo right on Chrissy’s Moon.
The Divinyls broke up in 1996 with transit Uranus square to Amphlett’s Sun and opposite her Moon.
She died in April 2013, with Saturn in early Scorpio conjunct her Neptune, having had it on her Sun for her final months.
What to say in conclusion about someone with such a powerful Scorpio persona?
Perhaps its just best to leave it to the lady herself.
“It’s a fine, fine line between pleasure and pain”.
