To Russia With Love

As a Sun, Moon, Ascendant Capricorn, I love routine.

When I was a teenager I use to think this was a weird obsession ( so did everyone else ).

But nature has its own routines, played out daily, so now I just feel my own are in tune with it.

I have always known I am simply a machine for converting caffeine into astrological research so I get a triple shot expresso ( the minimum required to get Saturn moving ) and at 6.00 I leave for my morning walk.

Fortunately I live in a normal country where sunrise will always occur around this time.

The Sun comes up over the Pacific and I spend an hour or so soaking it up.

I have always been an early riser. I attribute that to my 12th house Sun and Moon.

Contrary to the traditional astrological view of this house, I experience it as the place of revelation.

The 12th house ( and sign ) is about the dispersion of individuality, the giving up of the self to the service of the greater whole.

When I was first into astrology I read a book by Isabel Hickey who constantly insisted that anyone with a strong 12th was always presented with the same dilemma – to serve or suffer.

I can testify as to it’s truth and maybe that’s the thing the traditional interpretations pick up.

But equally if you are able to give up your ego and simply be a receptacle, the 12th offers the greatest rewards available. So I make a point of trying to do this every morning when the Sun is coming up out of the ocean in the 12th house.

My daily routine is all geared to receiving instruction from the rising Sun about the quality of the day.

I try to stay as mentally quiet as possible to allow inspiration to come.

Most days it does, often as I’m returning home there will be a very strong thought that comes in about something astrological I have to look into.

This morning I had a very clear instruction to look at the progressions of nations charts.

The reason for this wasn’t apparent until a couple of hours later after breakfast and another triple expresso.

I was discussing the situation in Russia with a young astrologer I mentor and realised that my instruction for the day was to look at the progressions for Russia.

If we are looking at a soulmate for a country rather than an individual, perhaps we are talking about a leader, in which case it could be a 10th house concern rather than a 7th house one.

The Russian Revolution chart for the Soviet Union has an interesting 10th house.

Jupiter is conjunct the Midheaven but we also have Pluto and the South Node there opposite Venus. Perhaps this points to the kind of dictatorial leadership that defined the Soviet Union and broke its own socialist ideals.

The Soviet Union lasted for 72 years so it would experience a similar range of progressions to the average person. It would be interesting to note if there were any Jupiterean soulmates appearing.

As it turned out, the first significant progression was Venus quincunx that Jupiter in 1923 – 24.

Regular readers will be well aware of the dangers of assuming knowledge of someone based on their Sun and Moon sign, and a Sagittarian with Moon in Libra would not do justice to one of the most evil tyrants of the 20th century.

Even the Capricorn Sun and Ascendant that I initially believed Joseph Stalin to share with me wouldn’t have covered it – see Uncle Joseph Stalin And His Friends Julian And Gregory

The truth is always found in the aspects and Stalin’s Mars in Scorpio in exact opposition to Pluto together with an even tighter Sun / Saturn square is pure serial killer territory.

Intriguingly Joseph Stalin came to power in 1923 – 24 when his progressed Venus formed a T square with that Mars / Pluto and his progressed Mars was conjunct his Sun and square to Saturn.

Stalin ruled Russia with an iron fist until his death 30 years later which is exactly how long it took before the Soviet Union progressed Venus made another aspect to that elevated Jupiter.

In 1953 – 54 the progressed trine brought Soviet soulmate number two, Nikita Kruschev.

Like Stalin, Kruschev also had Sun / Saturn and Mars / Pluto aspects although the first was a wider opposition and the second was a trine.

Khrushchev arguably had stronger synastry with the Soviet chart, with his Virgo Moon conjunct the Russian Ascendant and Mars hitting the empire’s T square.

He also khrucially had Jupiter in Gemini conjunct Neptune and Pluto right on the Jupiter / Midheaven of his country’s own chart.

His own progressions when taking power were equal to Stalin’s with a progressed Sun square his Moon and Venus square his Mars and opposite Uranus in 1953 – 54.

The next one with the country’s progressed Sun conjunct its Venus and trine its Mars from 1963 – 65 was Soviet Russia’s sweetheart.

With his Moon conjunct the Soviet Uranus, Leonid Brezhnev was perhaps closer to the ideological roots of communism than his predecessors since Lenin.

But the Sun in Sagittarius opposite Pluto meant he was a tough cookie as well.

His own progressed Venus conjunct his 10th house Uranus enabled him to take over in 1964 and preside over arguably the most powerful period in Russian history.

The next ( and last ) leader of the Soviet Union came along with the country’s progressed Sun sesquiquadrate Jupiter and Mars semisquare its Sun.

Mikhail Gorbachev had a Pisces Sun in exact trine with Jupiter at the Midheaven.

That Jupiter was also the apex of a T Square involving his Ascendant and Uranus.

With Mars and Pluto also in the 10th he was clearly destined to lead the Soviet Union but the oppositions to Venus and Saturn and the Pisces Mercury opposite an 11th house Neptune suggested it was his karmic role to disband it.

His synastry with the Soviet chart would agree with that assessment as his Sun was exactly opposite its Moon and his Moon closely conjunct its Saturn.

Gorbachev’s own progression in 1984 – 85 when he assumed control was the Sun trine Neptune.

His Piscean dissolution role worked perfectly, within 5 years the Berlin Wall had come down and in 7 years there was a completely new state.

The chart for the new Russia contained bizarre similarities to that of the Soviet Union.

Both have a Virgo Moon, the Russian Moon is exactly conjunct the Soviet Mars with the Soviet Moon being conjunct the Russian Jupiter.

The Russian Sun is conjunct the Soviet Venus and the Soviet Sun is conjunct the Russian Venus.

Both have a 4th house Venus with close aspects to Pluto.

This seems to be suggesting that both states would have major problems with their satellites or near neighbours.

This has certainly played out in their conflict with Ukraine. For an analysis of the synastry between the two charts written before the Russian invasion see The Venus / Pluto Ukraine Border Dance and another after it began Has Vlad Gone Mad ?

A condensed version of these articles would point to the Ukraine Moon in Aquarius in the 1st house wanting independence and greater ties with the west but faced with a very powerful opponent ( opposite Mercury / Jupiter and Venus in Leo in the 7th house ).

This opposition focuses by apex onto an explosive Pluto in Scorpio in the 9th indicating a conflict that could easily become global and even nuclear.

The tension in this T square is ramped up by the fact that it hits the Russian Venus / Pluto conjunction which is exactly square to the Ukraine Moon.

Saturn was transiting these degrees ( conjunct the Ukraine Moon ) through most of 2022. Just this last week, Uranus has come to square the Ukraine Moon and oppose the Russian Venus / Pluto and it seems the tide is turning quickly.

But I digress because this piece is about progressed soulmate synastry.

Russia is only 30 odd years old so it has only had time to make one major progressed aspect – Venus square to its Moon in 1999 – 2000 when Vladimir Putin took control.

It is my belief that the chart generally used for Putin is wrong see Have We Putin The Wrong Year ?

This Moon / Pluto conjunction in Leo in the 9th certainly is a better fit than the Gemini Moon one.

It also square the Russian Venus / Pluto conjunction and hits the Soviet Saturn ( and it’s T square ) in an homage to Putin’s KGB past.

It also falls in the Ukraine T square ( opposing its Aquarian Moon ) in a way that defines his obsession with his neighbour.

Both the 1950 and the 52 chart give him a Sun / Neptune conjunction.

In 1999 – 2000, Putin’s progressed Sun was semisquare his Neptune.

The fact that this is a pivotal period in the history of modern Russia is shown by it’s progressions.

In 2022 – 23 the Russian progressed Sun is conjunct Saturn.

In 2023 – 24 its progressed Mars is conjunct Uranus.

And in 2024 – 25 the progressed Venus will be trine its Moon and conjunct its Sun.

So Russia will have a new soulmate / leader.

In many ways the situation is similar to that of Leonid Brezhnev becoming leader with the same progression in 1964.

The war with Ukraine with its threat of nuclear escalation was similar to the Cuba Missile crisis in the last days of Kruschev.

This last week has seen a threatened coup that has made Vlad the Impaler look considerably paler. The transit of Uranus and these progressions will inevitably remove him from power.

What advice would we give to Putin ?

With his Sun conjunct Neptune in the Equal House 12th, it’s time to retire to Australia and take some nice contemplative walks by the Pacific.

Maybe pass on the expressos though.
