Just like the people who are their representatives, most astrology charts contain things that they would call good and bad, or to put it more accurately, easy and difficult. And it’s a fairly simple task to identify where each of these theme are.

It’s often as straightforward as looking at Jupiter and Saturn.

American film star, Drew Barrymore has the great benefic Jupiter conjunct Venus in the 10th house, so the favourable stuff is going to be all centred around her career.

She also has the malefic Saturn conjunct a Cancer Moon so her family life is going to be an uphill struggle.

The aspects to her Sun and Moon reinforce these two apparently contradictory themes.

Her Sun is right on her Midheaven and in exact trine to a 5th house Uranus, indicating a powerful career with a sudden and unconventional breakthrough as an actress.

Barrymore came from an acting family and was a child star, her breakthrough role coming at the age of 7 as Gertie in the film E.T.

“E.T. was the highest-grossing film of the 1980s and made Barrymore one of the most famous child actors of the time. She won the Young Artist Award for Best Young Supporting Actress and was nominated for the Rising Star Award at the British Academy Film Awards. She became the youngest person to guest-host Saturday Night Live at 7 years old.”

This all occurred with transit Uranus exactly square to her Sun.

Drew Barrymore’s Cancer Moon however is opposite an 8th house Mars, suggesting that family members will leave her.

“In her autobiography, Drew Barrymore recounted early memories of her abusive father (actor John Drew Barrymore), who left the family when she was six months old (occurring as both transit Saturn and her progressed Moon perfected the opposition with her Mars).

She and her father never had a significant relationship and seldom spoke.

Drew’s mother Jaid had starred in some minor productions in the early 1980s, but it was her young daughter who was the main breadwinner in the family.

Jaid was focusing all her efforts on being her daughter’s manager. She, however, had less interest in being a mom. Drew has spoken on various occasions about how her mother took her to the Studio 54 nightclub, where she let her drink alcohol as if she were an adult.

Drew was placed in rehab at 13, and spent eighteen months in an institution for the mentally ill.  A suicide attempt at 14 put her back in rehab.

 After a successful juvenile court petition for emancipation, Drew moved into her own apartment at the age of 15.”

This is often the case. Saturn’s theme is one of self reliance, it achieves this by blocking the person’s experience.

With Saturn conjunct a Cancer Moon the emotional support that everyone would expect from a family, particularly the mother would be denied to Drew Barrymore.

She would therefore be forced to try and find that in herself.

Saturn’s transits would inevitably bring these patterns up again in a way where they would have to be dealt with.

Saturn has a cycle of 29 years, so every 7 it would form major aspects to its natal position.

When Drew starred in ET and became the main earner in her family, Saturn made its first transit (the square) to her Moon.

Her emanicipation from her family occurred with the second Saturn transit, opposite her Moon.

“Drew has said that she blames her mother for her wrongdoings more than she does her father for abandoning her.”

This is interesting because her Saturn is conjunct her Moon (mother).

The standout synastry between Jaid and her daughter is that her own Saturn at 20 Cancer is conjunct Drew’s Moon at 18.

We don’t have a birthtime for Jaid, but it’s clear that she would have relationship problems just by looking at her Venus and Mars.

Venus conjunct Uranus and Mars conjunct Pluto would suggest that drama, change and violence would be major themes.

Also the square aspect between the Sun and Moon would indicate difficulty in general with male figures in her life.

Drew’s father John has a Venus/Pluto conjunction in Cancer.

This combo sits astride Drew’s Moon, which very simply explains why he left her at a young age (Pluto) and why she doesn’t blame him for her problems (Venus).

John’s synastry with Jaid is powerful and extremely challenging.

His 7th house Mars is exactly conjunct her Sun.

It is also square to Jaid’s Moon.

John’s Sun/Moon conjunction in Gemini is right on top of Jaid’s Venus/Uranus conjunction there.

Jaid’s Mars/Pluto conjunction is closely opposite to John’s Saturn and square to his Ascendant.

His Venus/Pluto conjunction is on her Saturn.

John and Jaid were meant to come together for a marriage that contained domestic abuse and the birth of Drew, but also to divorce quickly.

This is not complex astrology. All of it can be seen very clearly and could have been predicted, not least from the day of John and Jaid’s Marriage (6th April 1971) as Saturn was at 17 Taurus, exactly conjunct Jaid’s Sun and John’s 7th house Mars.

We all choose our birth charts, and therefore we must choose our parents because their input into the patterns that we have to play out through our lives will always have significance.

Drew Barrymore’s problems all seemed to come from her choice of family to be born into.

Why would she choose to come into this situation? Was there a carry over from a past life?

This was a question that came very powerfully to me when researching this article so I decided to cast a horary for it.

Over the last 50 years I have learnt that the best starting point with anything astrological is to be sceptical. To start off not believing it and force the chart to prove itself.

This is particularly important in horary, especially if I have cast a chart for a question I have asked myself.

By applying this principle, this chart passes all the requirements.

I am asking about a past life for Drew Barrymore that focuses around her Moon/Saturn conjunction in Cancer.

The Ascendant and its ruler in any horary must describe the subject. If it doesn’t do that very strongly you should either discard it completely or be very careful judging it.

The Ascendant of 22 Cancer is within 5 degrees of Drew’s natal Moon.

The Ascendant ruler is the Moon which at 10 Cancer is less than 2 degrees from her natal Saturn.

The odds of this occurring by chance is well over 3,000 to 1 against.

So we can safely proceed to analyse this chart in terms of Drew Barrymore’s past life connection with her parents.

The Moon represents Drew. In Cancer she would have been female in that life and in the 12th house, she would have been isolated in some way.

How would we find her parents? By checking the ruler of the 4th house.

As Scorpio is on the cusp we are looking at dual rulership of Mars and Pluto. Interestingly they are opposite each other which totally makes sense in terms of their connection in this life.

But which one is which?

We can check with their current life charts.

Mars at 6 Leo is a mere degree away from Jaid’s own Mars (7 Leo). It is also in the 1st house and Jaid’s noon chart places her Mars conjunct the Ascendant.

So Mars in the horary must be Jaid.

Pluto at 3.49 Aquarius is half a degree from John’s Saturn (4.23 Aquarius).

So Pluto must be John.

In a Past Life horary, the house position of a ruler will indicate what role someone would have played in that previous life.

So Pluto as the 4th house ruler being in Aquarius tells us that Drew Barrymore’s father John was male in that life as well. It being in the 7th house says that he was Drew’s husband.

Mars is in Leo so Jaid was also male back then. It being in the 1st house suggests that Jaid was not a relative of Drew’s in this life.

The 1st is the 10th from the 4th, so it’s possible that Jaid was John’s employer, or some kind of professional rival.

The opposition between Mars and Pluto means there was considerable tension between them and quite possibly violence.

The Moon is in close sextile with the Sun which is exactly (to the minute) on the Midheaven.

The Sun is the apex planet of a T square formed by the opposition between Mars and Pluto.

This all indicates that Drew, although isolated from her family would gain benefit in her career from this past life incident between her current life parents.

To find out when Drew Barrymore’s relationship patterns with her parents first took shape we have to regress her chart back to a point where her Sun was conjunct her Saturn.

This takes us to Xmas Day in 1741.

This is a particularly important point in her past lives, a fact that is confirmed by the placing of her regressed Moon in close opposition to her Saturn.

Other significant factors are that her regressed Venus is exactly trine (within 5 minutes) her Mercury and the South Node is right on (1/3 of a degree orb) her current life Ascendant.

If we want to find out more about what happened to Drew Barrymore in 1741, we have to look at her regressed Solar Return for that year.

Her Sun is right on the Descendant forming a T Square with her Ascendant and an apex Moon at the Midheaven.

The fact that the big three are involved within a couple of degrees of the angles, makes this a very powerful return. We could probably check every year’s solar return since 1741 and not come up with a stronger one.

A simple interpretation would be that some difficult incident involving Drew’s husband was very favourable for her/his own career. Which backs up what the horary was saying.

Was John Barrymore around then?

John Barrymore’s regressed chart for Xmas Day 1741 sees his Sun exactly (3minutes of arc) sextile his Saturn.

His regressed Mars is exactly opposite his Moon (1/2 degree).

His regressed Ascendant is exactly conjunct his 7th house Mars (5 minutes of arc).

His regressed Saturn is exactly opposite his Pluto (40 minutes).

So we can say yes he definitely was there. These are all powerful pointers that trigger his relationship and family themes.

What happened to him?

The strongest aspect by far is the tight opposition between the Moon in Aquarius on the 6th cusp and Mars in Leo in the 12th.

The Aquarius/Mars in Leo theme reflects the horary.

This suggests a violent incident that caused significant health problems for John and probably put him in hospital.

The Sun being in the 9th house conjunct Venus with Jupiter in Cancer in the 10th opposite Uranus in the 4th suggests that he was abroad on some kind of family business.

What about Jaid? Was she also there?

Jaid’s regressed Mars is exactly conjunct her this life Saturn (orb of less than 10 minutes).

Her regressed Moon, Ascendant and Jupiter make very close contacts with her current life Ascendant, Venus and Pluto.

Her regressed Sun makes close connections with her natal Saturn and Jupiter.

So Jaid was also there. But what happened to her?

With a tight Grand Cross involving the Moon, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Pluto we could say that this is one of the toughest Solar Returns that Jaid Barrymore would have had in the past 3 centuries.

There are also massive triggers to her current life patterns as this Mars is within 1/3 of a degree to her natal Mars.

This Pluto is exactly square its own natal position (again with an orb of 1/3 degree).

This Moon is exactly opposite her natal Pluto (5 minutes).

Mars conjunct Saturn in the 8th house as part of this Grand Cross means that she would certainly have died as a result of a violent incident.

My feeling about all of this was that John and Jaid were business rivals and they fought a duel in which John was injured and Jaid died.

The Sun along with John’s solar return Moon being in the 6th house and this Moon in the 2nd suggests it was something to do with work and maybe an argument over finance.

I have a method for determining when someone was born in a previous life. It involves a regression to the 4th house ruler of the current life chart.

In June 1701, Drew’s regressed Sun was exactly square to her 4th house ruler (also Sun).

Her regressed Moon was a mere few minutes from her current life Moon.

This means that at the time of this incident she would have been in her 40th year.

If we do the same with John’s chart we get a date in early January 1700, so he would be 41 years old.

Doing the same with Jaid’s chart takes us to a birthdate in early October 1699, so they were all around the same age.

Using dowsing, I found that these events occurred in China. All three were born in Beijing, although John and Jaid were on a business trip away from the city at the time.

“In 1741, China was at the peak of the Qing Dynasty under the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, known as a period of prosperity and artistic flourishing. The Qianlong Emperor’s reign (1736-1795) was a particularly rich time for Chinese culture, with the emperor known for his extensive collection of art “.

John and Jaid were business partners in this life whose company were engaged in buying artefacts for the royal court. Although partners, Jaid was the senior and there was rivalry and jealousy between them. This escalated to the point where they fought a duel.

Jaid was killed, John was seriously injured. Drew had to step in to take control of the business.

When someone kills another in a previous life, both are locked into a cycle where they have to keep on reincarnating with each other until the victim can forgive the perpetrator. Other people involved in that incident would also keep returning to try and help with resolution of the conflict between them.

Many people if they think about reincarnation talk about being in ancient Egypt or Atlantis. 

My feeling and my own regressed experience is that the turnover between lifetimes is fairly quick. 

When we leave this life we enter a timeless realm but the unresolved patterns that we have left behind on Earth have a momentum of their own. 

In 1741, Jaid was killed in a duel with John. Such an event is likely to have built a karma that would have demanded at least one reincarnation together in order to dissipate or resolve some of that energy.

It’s likely that John, Jaid and Drew have had a couple of other lives since this one, and significant events in those lives could well have centred around times when Drew’s regressed Sun formed the square and the opposition to her current life Saturn.

These would be around the years 1830 and 1920. Given that John was born in 1932 in this life, the latter of those dates would probably refer to when he died in his last life.

Their shared experience in their current life shows that while the intensity of the 18th century Chinese life has reduced to some degree, there is still work to be done.

For a while I have been thinking that if Secondary Regressions can reveal previous connections between members of a soul group and events in their previous lives, it should therefore be possible to look at Progressions in a way that gives us an insight into future ones.

John Barrymore died in 2004 at the age of 92, Jaid is just about to reach her 79th birthday, Drew has just turned 50.

It’s possible that John and Jaid may have another connection to make over the next couple of decades, but something that could involve all three of them could be another 50 years from now.

If we look to Drew’s chart the most significant future progression for this family theme would be when her progressed Sun forms another conjunction with her Saturn (as it did in 1741).

This would be in the year 2107.

This does seem to be an important point in Drew Barrymore’s future life.

Her progressed Moon is sextile itself and Mercury is conjunct her current life Ascendant.

Her progressed Mars is opposite her current Uranus and sextile her Sun.

Would we find a similar level of connection for John?

John’s progressed Sun in 2107 is exactly opposite his current life Mercury (orb 12 minutes). It is also exactly sextile his Saturn (orb 3 minutes).

His progressed Moon is opposite his 7th house Mars (orb 43 minutes).

His progressed Mercury is exactly opposite his Moon (orb 46 minutes).

His progressed Mars is exactly sextile his Ascendant (orb 4 minutes).

His progressed Jupiter is exactly square to his Moon (orb 24 minutes)

So we can safely say he will be there in March 2107.

What about Jaid?

Jaid’s progressed Sun is trine and sextile her Nodes (orb less than a degree).

Her progressed Uranus is right on her North Node (orb 19 minutes)

Her progressed Saturn is exactly square to her Mars (orb half a degree).

The Mars/Pluto theme (they are closely conjunct in her current chart) is replicated here with a tight square aspect and this is enriched by the presence of Mercury and Saturn around the same degrees.

Although Jaid’s current life birthtime is not available, it’s interesting how closely this all falls to her noon Ascendant (14.18 Leo).

Her progressed Moon is in Cancer in close trine with Jupiter.

Maybe this future life and the events of 25th March 2107 gives these three souls further opportunity to resolve the themes that they share.

I was contemplating this and a strong thought came to me to cast another horary for this future Barrymore life.

But just as before, it’s very important to make such a horary prove itself.

With Taurus on the Ascendant, Drew in this future life is Venus. In Aries she will be male this time. Venus is in the 10th house so again her career is the focus.

With Venus closely conjunct Neptune the 10th house ruler, this sounds like another career in the film industry, whatever that might be in the next century.

My feeling is that we can’t use the 4th house to locate John or Jaid because there is no joint rulership.

But I believe we can look to the same two planets that described their roles in the Chinese life, Mars and Pluto.

It feels particularly appropriate to do this for Jaid because Mars is even closer to her own natal Mars (a mere 11 minutes). Even more so because the Moon is a mere degree away from her natal Moon.

The odds of these two placements occurring so closely to her own natal ones by chance are over 150,000 to 1 against. Which is an absolute confirmation of the use of this horary to cover the themes of the Barrymores’ future lives.

So Jaid is again male in this future life. Mars and the Moon being in the 3rd house would suggest she will be coming back as Drew’s brother.

With Pluto in the 9th house, John is more difficult to place.

Perhaps the relative ages might help. Using the regressions to the 4th house rulership principle, I’ve worked out that in 2107, both Drew and Jaid would be around the age of 40, similar to their ages in 1741.

Jaid would therefore be Drew’s slightly older brother.

John. would be around the age of 60, so perhaps an uncle or a cousin to Drew and Jaid.

Mars and Pluto are again in opposition, so we have this carry over of conflict between John and Jaid. However Mars is more than a degree further from Pluto than in the original horary so it seems that the level of conflict has dialled down a bit.

It is also not in angular houses, so we have to assume from this that the difficult theme created by their duel in 1741 is slowly dissipating.

Another really important factor is the position of Venus (Drew).

Venus is applying to trine Mars (Jaid) and sextile Pluto (John) so this time round the impact of their conflict on Drew’s future life is negligible. In fact if anything we should see Drew’s role in this life as one which helps ease John and Jaid’s problems and is supportive to both of them.

We would have to take this as the result of Drew Barrymore’s ability to forgive her parents for their roles in her current life.

What could the event which is due to occur in March 2107 be?

Drew’s Solar Return for this year contains a New Moon with Mars conjunct the Midheaven, so it’s looking like a very important year for her/his career.

With Mars in close sextile with Jupiter and Pluto it looks like a very favourable one.

As the Moon is the 2nd house ruler, and conjunct the Sun, this looks like a significant infusion of money.

With the chart ruling Mercury in the 8th house in square to Jupiter and Pluto and the Sun and Moon quincunx Neptune in the 4th house, this money seems to be coming as an inheritance from the death of a family member.

With Mercury in Cancer in the 8th house in his Solar Return for that year, in exact (less than 20 minutes) opposition to Saturn in the 2nd, this is looking like the end of John Barrymore’s future life.

That this is part of a Kite involving Mars, Pluto and Jupiter and with a tight Moon/Venus conjunction in Cancer, it seems that John’s death has a beneficial effect for members of his family.

Note the position of Mars. It is in the 10th house exactly to the minute opposite the 10th house Mars in Drew’s Solar Return.

So from this and the fact that the horary gives a tight sextile between Venus (Drew) and Pluto (John), I believe that she/he would have inherited his fortune.

Jaid’s Solar Return is ambivalent. On the one hand there is a tight sextile between the Sun and 4th house Cancer Moon suggesting that a family event would be favourable.

On the other hand the Sun is tightly conjunct Uranus indicating a shock. And Saturn dominates the chart from the Midheaven.

This Saturn is also closely conjunct the 2nd house Saturn of John’s Solar Return.

So we might surmise from all this that John and Jaid continued their difficult family relationship through this life but John left his fortune to Drew when he died.

Even in the 22nd century, it seems that the themes of business success with Jupiter but personal trauma with Saturn are still alive and kicking.
