Astrology is the only discipline that truly recognises the uniqueness of the individual and the whole person.
Others like education, psychology, sociology etc profess to do this but still try to analyse parts and place people in group boxes.
A birthchart can comprehend and encompass the personality and life themes of the individual in far more sophisticated and specialised ways than any other method can, but it is also not specifically about the self.
Astrology looks to see that self as a part of the totality of all life, because this is what the birthchart represents.
The whole circle is everything that has ever been and could ever be, all possibilities actual or imagined can be found within it.
The placements and the connected patterns that they make show us how the individual’s own themes sit within the context of the totality of life. We can learn a lot about ourselves and our place in the world by studying them, but no man is an island.
Many of our chart themes are about how we interact with others, not least those closest to us. Therefore we should not attempt to study our own chart in a vacuum.
We can learn more about ourselves and our patterns by looking at our synastry with other family members and perhaps most importantly of all with our parents.
We know that our Sun and Moon placements and their own aspect patterns will tell us a lot about our path through life. When we are young we experience the interaction of our lights mostly through our relationship with our father and mother and their own shared patterns.
We choose our parents precisely because they will give us the early experience that we need to lay the foundations of our own Sun/Moon themes.
Consequently if we try to study our own birthchart without reference to theirs we are in danger of missing something very important.
There are a number of ways to do this.
Straightforward synastry drawing aspect lines between our own placements and those of another person will reveal a lot about how we would interact with them.
Composite charts that form midpoints between each person’s placements can add something that gives us insight into the relationship itself.
I have discovered that there is something else, a Karmic Relationship Chart that is attained by regressing our own chart back to the time, date and place of birth of the other person. This method tells us which of our own life patterns are triggered, conditioned by or even inherited from them.

I now have a package that combines the Karmic Relationship chart with synastry and composites which I call Dynastry
One client who chose to take one of these packages is S
S has an interesting chart, one that fits a Seesaw pattern with two distinct clusters of planets that largely oppose each other.
This will generally indicate someone whose life is pulled strongly in two different directions and it will be a challenge for them to integrate both but they will be forced to try to do just that.
The planets in the upper left quadrant are all personal ones (Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus), those in the bottom right are the five impersonal ones (I’m including Saturn because it is so close to the IC as to be considered a 4th house influence).
With the personal placements in strong, outgoing signs S is an extrovert character, socially active and successful in her career.
Her Sun (in Gemini in the 11th house) is opposite Uranus in the 5th house.
Her Venus (in Aries in the 10th house) is opposite Pluto in the 4th house.
Her Moon (in Leo in the 12th house) is square to Jupiter in the 4th house.
Even her Mars (in Libra in the 3rd) is square to Neptune in the 5th.
All of these indicate powerful themes of change and challenge around home, family and children.
So to really get a handle on the main themes of S’s life we would have to look at the charts of other family members.
We don’t have a birthtime for S’s ex husband but we can see a strikingly similar pattern.
Again there is a Seesaw pattern between with a powerful opposition which the noon chart places in the 10th to the 4th houses.
S’s Venus at 25.51 Aries is exactly conjunct her ex’s Mars at 24.44.
Both placements are closely opposite Pluto and the ex’s Moon, Mercury and Sun are involved in this pattern as well.
With such a powerful pattern, it goes without saying that their marriage did not survive the Pluto transit through late Capricorn that formed a T square to it.
S and her ex had two children, a daughter and a son.
S’s daughter has a very strong chart.
A Sun, Moon, Venus conjunction in Leo in the 10th house indicates this straight away, but there is also a Grand Cross involving the Ascendant, Mars at the Midheaven, Uranus on the Descendant and Pluto at the IC.
Her synastry with S is immensely powerful.
S’s Moon at 2 Leo is exactly conjunct her Venus and closely so with her Sun and Moon.
S’s Mars is exactly conjunct her Ascendant (within 10 minutes).
They both have close Sun/Uranus aspects (S has the opposition, daughter has the trine). It’s also worth pointing out that the Ex has an exact quincunx between the Sun and Uranus.
And of course they both have this challenging Pluto in the 4th house.
This is the kind of synastry that we would see in the charts of soulmates. We can certainly say that they chose each other as mother and daughter in order to experience the themes that both natal charts insisted that they have to.
If we look at their connection through my discovery of the Karmic Relationship Chart regressing the daughter’s chart back to the birthdate of her mother we can see this very clearly.
Her regressed Sun and Moon are right in that Grand Cross with the Moon exactly (1/5 of a degree) opposite that 4th house Pluto.
The odds against this happening by chance are over 50,000 to 1 against.
I think it’s important to consider how slowly progressions move when we are making a connection like this.
This is the first time the regressed Sun could have made an aspect with her Pluto and the first time the Moon could have made the opposition.
Before that the last time both regressed Sun and Moon were in aspect to her Pluto would have been in the 1790s (Sun conjunct and Moon square)
This regression shows us that for the daughter to have the chart patterns she does, she would have to have been born with S as her mother.
Incidentally the same goes for her father, because since he was born just over a year before S, the daughter’s regressed chart to his birthdate would bring the Sun even closer to the opposition with Pluto.
What about the other way round? If we progress S’s chart forward to her daughter’s birthdate will we see strong connections there as well?
Let’s just get a reminder of S’s chart
And the progressed relationship chart?
Both charts have Venus in the 10th opposite a heavyweight slow mover in the 4th (Pluto in the natal, Uranus in the progressed).
Both charts have a Leo Moon and Ascendant (remember the daughter is a Sun/Moon Leo).
In this progressed chart the Moon and Ascendant are at the apex of a T square involving Venus and Uranus.
So again it’s clear that the daughter’s birth triggers S’s challenging family themes.
How does this play into the Ex’s astrology. Here’s his natal chart again.
And progressing it to his daughter’s birthdate?
Granted we are working with a noon chart that gives us the 10th/4th pattern, but wherever this opposition fell in his natal chart, it would be occurring in the same place in this one.
This is the first time that the progressed Moon could appear again opposition to his Sun/Mars since his birth.
The progressed Sun is exactly opposite Uranus.
Interestingly if S’s Ex was born later in the day, these connections would be even tighter.
What about S’s son?
Like his mother, the son has a very close Sun/Uranus opposition from the 5th to the 11th, although his is reversed and is in Libra/Aries.
He also has the Moon as part of this and there is a T square to an apex Pluto in the 8th house.
As there is only a couple of years between S’s two childrens’ birthdates, there is not much time for progressed changes so the relationship chart that she had with her son would be very similar to that with her daughter.
The 10th house Venus/4th house Uranus opposition is the same.
The only planet that would have significantly moved by progression in two years is the Moon.
It has moved from the end of Leo to the end of Virgo.
This means that the T square involving the apex Moon on the Ascendant that S had with her daughter has been replaced by a softer, easier trine between the Moon, Venus and Uranus.
This would suggest that while her son is also an important factor in her own Venus/Pluto pattern, it is not quite as intensely powerful as it is with her daughter.
If we regress the son’s chart back to S’s birthdate, I feel we have confirmation of this theme.
There are still Sun/Uranus themes although this time the aspect is an exact quincunx (150 degrees) rather than the natal opposition that they both share.
What was it that separated S and her Ex?
It was the arrival on the scene of an even more Uranian figure.
S’s new husband has an exact Sun/Uranus conjunction in Virgo in the 3rd house.
These two are also exactly conjunct Venus and more widely conjunct Pluto.
S’s Sun is at 5.40 Gemini, his Sun/Venus/Uranus conjunction is between 5.40 and 5.47 Virgo, exactly square to hers.
This is a very powerful karmic connection. It is significant that the husband is 19 years older than her.
This is because of the role of Uranus in the two charts.
The aspect between S’s Sun/Uranus and his combination is a square which is a challenging one.
S’s Venus in Aries is also opposite his Mars in Libra.
S’s Mars in Libra is also square his Moon and Ascendant.
The attraction between them would have been intense and powerful, as if there was something bigger than both of them compelling them to be together.
Because of the exactness of the aspects, the odds against this kind of synastry occurring by chance are millions to one against.”
What if we regress S’s chart to her new husband’s birthdate?
This regression picks up these themes again.
The Sun in the 10th opposite the Moon in the 4th suggests a relationship that would be favourable in terms of her career but there would also be some challenges with home and family.
These challenges would be reinforced by the Sun’s quincunx to Saturn.
The opposition between Venus and Mars from the 9th to the 3rd house could suggest problems around or requiring a move or travel abroad.
This opposition forming a T square with an apex Neptune in the 5th house could point to difficulties with children, a theme that would be confirmed by the opposition between the Mercury and Uranus on the cusp of the 5th.
If we progress the husband’s chart to S’s date of birth we get this chart.
Here we have a very powerful 6 planet stellium including a close Sun/Moon conjunction in the 4th house showing that the husband’s relationship with S would put massive focus on his own family.
The inclusion of Uranus and Pluto on the IC would indicate a powerful upheaval in these areas.
When we place this chart alongside his own we can see the similarities.
With an exact Sun/Venus/Uranus conjunction in Virgo trine the Moon on the Descendant, it is clear that a relationship would bring major changes in his life.
The Karmic Relationship Chart’s stellium in the same sign shows that it would be the relationship with S that fits strongly into this pattern and it falling in the 4th house focuses it powerfully onto his family.
S has extremely strong synastry with both husbands, her daughter and her son.
All 5 of them have very powerful and tight Sun/Uranus aspects.
S and her son have the opposition, her husband has the conjunction, her ex the quincunx and her daughter the trine.
All of them are within 3 degrees. The odds against these Sun/Uranus aspects alone happening for all of them by chance are over a million to 1 against.
This in itself would be a clear indication that they are all members of the same soul group who have chosen to come together at this time to have these experiences.
The Karmic Relationship Charts that S has with all of them brings this simple fact into much greater focus.
Given that transit Uranus is now at 5 Gemini, exactly conjunct her own Sun, square her husband’s, sextile her daughter’s and over the next few years will be trine her son’s, it seems that the reason why they have been brought together in this life is very much focused on this year.
It’s also possible that the current lunar eclipse which falls at 4 Virgo/Pisces could be a powerful trigger for all of these themes, so this would be a very opportune time to be looking into these family patterns.
This analysis has helped S to understand the true impact of her own Uranus transits and how this plays out through her whole family.
The basic principle of astrology is that anything born or begun in a moment will carry with it the characteristics of that moment. Beginnings hold the seeds of all that will follow and an astrological analysis of these moment will give us a greater understanding of the themes of the lives that proceed from them than any other form of study.
The Karmic Relationship Chart shows us that even this seed moment of birth is not the true beginning.
We can regress our own birthchart further to the seed moments of our own parents (or others) to help us understand the impact that our relationship with them will have on our own life themes.
